Francois Wins Three Events at States, Stettinger Takes 1st in the Javelin; Boys’ Tennis, Baseball Lose in Tournament

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The East Haven girls’ outdoor track team continued its strong postseason run by taking sixth place at the Class MM State Championship at Willow Brook Park in New Britain on June 2. Bolstered by three first-place finishes, the Yellowjackets scored 51 points to take sixth place at states after having previously finished first at the SCC West Sectional Championship and fourth in the SCC Championship.

Senior Kisha Francois claimed first place in three events for East Haven at states. Francois won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.81 seconds, placed first in the 200-meter dash at 26.32 seconds, and also won the long jump with a leap of 18 feet-7.25 inches, breaking her own school record of 18 feet in the event. Francois had previously won the 100, the 200, and the long jump at sectionals, after which she placed first in the 100 and the 200 at SCCs.

Sophomore Alice Stettinger recorded her third victory of the postseason in the javelin. Stettinger launched a toss of 118 feet-10 inches to win the javelin—an event in which she had also taken first place at both sectionals and SCCs. Stettinger also finished seventh in the shot put (32-9) and took 12th in the discus (71-3) at the Class MM meet.

Junior Morgan D’Auria finished third in triple jump (35-0) and placed 11th in high jump (4-08) for the Easties. Sophomore Jessica Urban finished sixth in 100 hurdles (17.31) and took 11th place in the 300 hurdles (52.24),

Junior Emily Mazzucco finished 14th in the triple jump (29-8) and also came in 39th place for the preliminaries of the 100. Sophomore Zayuri Castaneda placed 16th in javelin (77-6) on behalf of East Haven.

Francois has qualified for this week’s State Open meet in the 100, the 200, and the long jump. Stettinger has qualified in the javelin, while D’Auria qualified in the triple jump.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The East Haven boys’ outdoor track squad finished in 10th place with 24.5 total points when the Yellowjackets took part in the Class MM State Championship meet at Willow Brook Park on June 2.

Senior Radames Figueroa turned in the Easties’ top showing at states by taking second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.35 seconds. Figueroa also finished 15th in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet-1 inch.

Senior Dave Amatruda finished third in the 200-meter dash by timing in at 23.47 seconds. Amatruda also placed eighth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.89 seconds.

Sophomore Dom Salato finished third in the javelin (144-5) and claimed fifth place in the triple jump (39-4.75) for East Haven. Senior Mekhi Franklin finished 17th in long jump (18-9.75).

Figueroa has qualified for the State Open in the 110 hurdles. Amatruda advanced to the Open in the 200, while Salato made it for both the javelin and the triple jump.

Boys’ Tennis

The East Haven boys’ tennis team competed in states for the first time in 13 years last week. The Yellowjackets took a loss to Berlin in the qualifying round to finish with a record of 8-9 on the campaign.

On May 28, No. 15 seed East Haven hosted No. 18 Berlin in a Class M State Tournament qualifying round match and lost a 6-1 decision. Senior Mat DiVito claimed a 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 3 singles match for the Yellowjackets.

Baseball

After taking a loss in its regular-season finale, the East Haven baseball squad dropped its first-round contest in the Class L State Tournament last week.

On May 27, East Haven took a 6-2 home loss to Shelton in its last game of the regular season. Then on June 1, the Yellowjackets opened play in states at the No. 31 seed and took an 8-0 road loss against No. 2 seed Berlin in a first-round game. The East Haven finished its season with an overall record of 5-12.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Branford-East Haven (Bfd-EH) took a 7-6 defeat versus Newington in a Class L State Tournament qualifying round game last week. Bfd-EH posted an overall record of 6-10 for the campaign.

Bfd-EH was the No. 23 seed in the Class L tourney and played a road game against No. 10 seed Newington in the qualifying round on May 28. Bfd-EH was eliminated from the tournament with a 7-6 loss in the contest.

Senior Luke Volpe scored three goals, while fellow senior Nick Chieffo had two goals with an assist in the game. Senior Dylan Pyle scored a goal, and senior Matt Cordero had an assist. Junior Cam Paleski corralled 11 ground balls for Bfd-EH. Junior goalie Aidan Strebel made eight saves in net.
