Cardinals Create Some Breathing Room in League Standings

In Week 5 of the Deep River Horseshoe League, the top-three spots in the standings from Week 4 held true, although the Cardinals did create some more separation for first place. The league’s substitutes had a chance to get in some tosses thanks to several absences across many teams.

Unfortunately, there weren’t enough subs to go around, and so some teams had to record a blind score for the missing member. It made for some interesting scores, but there were no shortage of great performances.

The Braves’ Mike Zanelli, Sr., led the A Division once again with a high tally of 150 on the week. Mark Goodale of the Marlins had the second-highest mark at 145. Billy Beckwith of the Red Sox came in third place among the A’s with a high score of 134.

Andy Perna of the Reds had the B Division’s highest mark for the fifth-straight week with a 123, followed by a 120 from Ed Turner of the Red Sox. The Padres’ Paul Crystal put forth a high score of 107 for third-best in the B Division.

As for the C’s, Sheryl Serviss of the Pirates showed her formidable skills with a high mark of 127. The Marlins’ Karen Perna supplied the second-best mark of 112. Scott Allen, Jr., of the Dodgers posted a score of 108 for third.

Kris Toohey’s Cardinals topped Mike Zanelli, Sr., and the Giants by a score of 5-1, extending the team’s lead to 1.5 games over the second-place Reds. Even Zanelli, Sr., of the A Division shot a leading score of 150, but it was not enough to overcome the Cardinals’ attack.

Skip Robinson and the Pirates broke out of a sixth-place tie with to a 5-1 victory over John Hutra’s Cubs to move into fourth. Every thrower on the Pirates broke the 100-point barrier, marking the first time that any team has accomplished that feat this year.

Vinny Jonynas and the Tigers vaulted from a tie for 10th place into sixth place after defeating Todd Nuhn’s Mets, 5-1. Pudge Goodrich and the Reds were unable to maintain the tie with the Cardinals for first as they only were able to win over Tony Cutone’s Angels by a score of 3.5-2.5.

Following Week 5 action, the standings have the Cardinals in first place at 22-8, followed by the Reds (20.5-9.5), Marlins (19-11), Pirates (18-12), Dodgers (17.5-12.5), Tigers (17-13), Braves (16.5-13.5), Red Sox (16-14), Rangers (15.5-14.5), Angels (14-16), Mets (14-16), Giants (14-16), Cubs (12-18), Royals (12-18), White Sox (12-18), Orioles (10.5-19.5), Yankees (10.5-19.5), and Padres (9-21).
