H-K Baseball, Softball Lose in Second Round of States; Lewis Wins the Long Jump at Class M Championship

Baseball

The Haddam-Killingworth baseball team saw its season come to an end with a loss in the second round of the Class M State Tournament last week. The Cougars finished the year with an overall record of 16-7.

As the No. 10 seed, H-K hosted No. 23 Grasso Tech in the first round of the Class M bracket and won the game by the final score of 11-0. Senior Alec Erskine tossed a complete-game two-hitter and struck out 14 batters in the victory. Senior Matt Miranda had three hits for the Cougars.

The following day, H-K was on the road to face No. 7 seed Rockville for a second-round contest. The Cougars were eliminated from the tournament with a 6-5 loss against Rockville.

Softball

The H-K softball squad took a defeat against Jonathan Law in a Class M State Tournament second-round game last week. The Cougars went 16-4 overall for the spring season.

As the No. 4 seed in the Class L bracket, H-K had a bye through the first round. On June 2, the Cougars hosted No. 13 seed Jonathan Law in the second round and lost the game by a 7-1 score.

Boys’ Lacrosse

One week after claiming its first Shoreline Conference title, the Haddam-Killingworth boys’ lacrosse team competed in the Class S State Tournament last week. The Cougars posted a victory in the first round before losing their quarterfinal matchup to finish with an overall record of 14-6 this year.

In the first round of states, No. 8 seed H-K hosted No. 9 Tolland and edged out the Eagles by a 10-9 final. Three days later, the Cougars hosted No. 17 St. Joseph in the quarterfinals and took an 18-8 defeat.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

On the heels of claiming the Shoreline Conference crown, the Haddam-Killingworth girls’ outdoor track and field team competed at the Class M State Championship at Willow Brook Park in New Britain on June 2. The Cougars finished in eighth place by scoring 34 points at the meet.

Senior Kedarjah Lewis turned in another stellar postseason performance for H-K at states. Lewis finished first in the long jump with a distance of 18 feet-2.25 inches on behalf of the Cougars. Lewis also finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 35-5.25 and came in second place for the 100-meter dash by running a time of 12.82 seconds.

H-K’s 4x800 relay of junior Brianna Minervino, sophomore Isabel Berardino, senior Meara Bodak, and senior Katherine Melgar took fifth place with a time of 10:13.85. Junior Jessica Timothy finished sixth in the high jump (4-10), and senior Gabby Lester placed eighth in the discus (91-5).

Boys’ Golf

The H-K boys’ golf team completed its regular season by notching a victory last week.

On June 1, H-K faced Old Lyme in a road match at Black Hall Golf Club and defeated the Wildcats by the final tally of 196-201. With the win, the Cougars finished their season with an overall mark of 2-11-1.
