Guilford’s Track Teams Compete at States; Girls’ Tennis Loses in Class L Quarterfinals

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Guilford girls’ outdoor track squad competed at the Class L State Championship at Willow Brook Park in New Britain on June 1. The Grizzlies finished in 18th place for the Class L pack by scoring a total of 11.33 points in the meet.

Junior Julia Antony claimed fourth place in the 3,200-meter run by clocking in with a time of 10:43.64 for Guilford. Sophomore Alexa Suchy finished in eighth place with a time of 11:53.93.

Junior Rachel Ellison earned fourth place in the javelin with a toss of 93 feet-10 inches. Senior Zoe McClure placed eighth in the high jump by clearing 4-10 and also finished 13th in the triple jump with a leap of 31-3.25.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Guilford boys’ outdoor track team was represented by several athletes when the Class MM State Championship took place at Willow Brook Park in New Britain on June 2. Led by a third-place finish from their 4x800 relay, the Grizzlies scored seven points and finished in 24th place at the state meet.

Guilford’s 4x800 relay of senior Caleb Harris, junior Thomas Gregory, junior Justin Shiffrin, and senior Reese Puchalski recorded a time of 8:12.84 on its way to claiming third place in Class MM. Shiffrin also finished eighth in the 1,600-meter run with a mark of 4:30.12. Guilford’s 4x400 relay of Harris, Shiffrin, Gregory, and freshman Cho Mackinley took 10th place with a time of 3:42.58.

Sophomore Michael Masotti came in 10th place in the 3,200 at 10:03.05 and was followed by freshman Coleman Love in 13th place (10:14.01) and senior Tanner Updyke in 15th (10:19.80). Shiffrin also placed 15th in the 1,600 by running a time of 4:44.36. Sophomore Bretton Garrick finished in 17th place (2:08.49) for the 800, and Gregory finished 19th (2:11.96) in the event.

Girls’ Tennis

The Guilford girls’ tennis team saw its season come to a close when the Grizzlies took a close loss against North Haven in the quarterfinals of the Class L State Tournament last week.

On June 1, No. 10 seed Guilford hosted No. 15 North Haven for a Class L quarterfinal matchup and was edged out by a 4-3 score. The Grizzlies finished their season with an overall record of 13-7.
