H-K’s Baseball and Softball Squads Lose in Shorelines


Softball

The Haddam-Killingworth softball team won its opening game in the Shoreline Conference Tournament before taking a defeat in the semifinal round last week. The Cougars, who have an overall record of 16-3, are playing in the Class S State Tournament this week.

H-K was the No. 1 seed in Shorelines and started off the draw with an 8-0 win versus No. 8 Old Saybrook in a quarterfinal home game on May 24. Freshman Bella Richwine allowed only two hits and struck out seven batters in the victory. Fellow freshman Cheyenne LaTouche had two hits with two runs scored and an RBI.

The next day, H-K hosted Old Lyme in the semifinals and took a 1-0 defeat to the Wildcats. Old Lyme scored the only run of the game in the top of the seventh inning on its way to the win. Richwine pitched a great game in which she had 12 strikeouts for the Cougars.

H-K is the No. 4 seed in the Class M State Tournament and had a bye through the first round. The Cougars opened up the tournament by hosting a second-round contest on June 2 (after press time).

Baseball

The H-K baseball team took a loss against Morgan in the quarterfinal round of the Shoreline Conference Tournament last week. The Cougars are competing in the Class S State Tournament this week.

On May 24, No. 2 seed H-K hosted No. 7 seed Morgan in the Shoreline quarterfinals and lost to the Huskies by a 2-1 score. Trailing 1-0, Morgan scored its two runs in the top of the fourth inning and then hung on for the victory.

Senior Cavin Burrell had a double for H-K in the game. Senior Alex Erskine turned in a strong effort on the mound by allowing just two runs on five hits.

H-K, which is 15-6 overall, has the No. 10 seed in the Class M State Tournament and hosted No. 23 Grasso for a first-round game on June 1 (after press time).

Boys’ Golf

The H-K boys’ golf squad had an eventual week that saw the team compete at the Shoreline Conference Championship and then earn its first dual-meet win of the season.

On May 25, the Cougars participated in the Shoreline Conference Championship and posted a team score of 399 to finish in eighth place at Stanley Golf Course in New Britain. Junior Andrew Fleig finished in 13th place by shooting an 86 for the 18-hole round to lead H-K. Fellow junior Gabe Barile scored a 96 to finish in 21st place on the day.

The following day, H-K hosted North Branford and picked up its first win of the year by claiming a 188-199 home victory at Black Birch Golf Club. The day after that, the Cougars battled Old Saybrook to a 191-191 in a home match to finish with a record of 1-11-1 on the year.
