Guilford Girls’ Tennis Advances to Class L Quarterfinals; Antony Wins 1,600 at SCCs

Girls’ Tennis

The Guilford girls’ tennis team lost in the SCC Division I semifinals last week, but came right back to get a victory in its first matchup of the Class L State Tournament. The Grizzlies were sporting an overall record of 13-6 as they prepared to face North Haven in the state quarterfinals this week.

As the No. 3 seed, Guilford kicked off play in the SCC Division I Tournament by earning a 6-1 home victory over No. 6 Cheshire in a quarterfinal contest on May 24. Senior Hannah Dietzko won her No. 1 singles match by a 6-2, 6-0 score for the Grizzlies. Sophomore Riley Mullett was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 2 singles; senior Emma Mullett posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 3 singles; and freshman Molly Peterson won a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 4 singles.

Guilford’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Veronica Zimmer and freshman Kendall Mulligan claimed a 6-3, 6-2 victory. The No. 2 duo of senior Kiera Stankewich and freshman Kallie Kagan netted a 6-4, 6-3 win.

The next day, Guilford played a semifinal match at No. 2 seed Hand and was edged out by a 4-3 score. Emma Mullett earned a 6-3, 1-6, 10-7 victory at No. 3 singles for the Grizzlies. Peterson notched a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 4 singles match. Guilford’s No. 2 doubles team of Stankewich and Kagan rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) victory.

Then on May 28, No. 10 seed Guilford started off the Class L State Tournament by earning a 6-1 win at No. 7 Branford in a first-round match. The Grizzlies hosted North Haven in the quarterfinal round on June 1 (after press time). The semifinals were on June 2 (after press time), and the Class L state final takes place on Thursday, June 3 at 1:30 p.m. at Wesleyan University.

Boys’ Tennis

The Guilford boys’ tennis team took a loss in the SCC Division I Tournament and then saw its season come to a close with a defeat in the Class L State Tournament last week. The Grizzlies finished with an overall record of 9-9 on the campaign.

On May 24, No. 5 Guilford played a road match against Fairfield Prep in the SCC Division I quarterfinals and lost by a 4-3 score. The Grizzles then opened play in the Class L State Tournament as the No. 11 seed on May 28. Guilford took a 4-0 loss at No. 6 seed New Canaan in a first-round contest.

Boys’ Golf

The Guilford boys’ golf team competed in the SCC Championship at Race Brook Country Club on May 25. The Grizzlies finished in seventh place at the meet by recorded an overall team score of 364.

Senior Peter Keanna and junior Miguel Pearce posted the lowest totals for Guilford at the SCC meet. Keanna and Pearce both finished with a score of 87 on the day.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Guilford girls’ outdoor team took part in the SCC Championship at Bowen Field in New Haven on May 25. The Grizzlies came in ninth place as a squad by scoring 34 points at the meet.

One week after winning the 1,600 at the SCC East Sectional meet, junior Julia Antony took first place in the event with a time of 5:12.52 at the SCC Championship. Antony also finished second in the 3,200 by running a time of 11:44.66. Sophomore Alexa Suchy finished fourth for the 3,200 (11:45.64), and sophomore Clara Laughlin was 13th (12:59.12) in the event.

Junior Rachel Ellison finished in fourth place in the javelin with a toss of 92 feet for the Grizzlies. Senior Zoe McClure finished in fourth place for the high jump by clearing 4-8 and also took 11th in the triple jump with a distance of 32-5.25. Sophomore Jadyn Weik finished 10th in the high jump with a height of 4-6.

In the 400, sophomore Kailyn Scott came in seventh place by clocking in at 1:05.60 for Guilford. Senior Moira Kellaher took 12th place in the 800 with a time of 2:36.01. In the long jump, sophomore Eliza Hastings finished 14th with a leap of 14-6.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Guilford boys’ outdoor track and field team finished in 15th place with 14 points scored at the SCC Championship at Bowen Field on May 25.

Guilford’s 4x800 relay team of senior Caleb Harris, sophomore Bretton Garrick, sophomore Michael Masotti, and junior Thomas Gregory finished in fourth place with a time of 8:27.48 at the SCC meet. Junior Shiffrin finished fifth (4:29.45) in the 1,600 with a time of 4:29.45 and was followed by senior Puchalski in sixth (4:32.75) and freshman Coleman Love in 14th (4:41.66).

Shiffrin also took eighth place in the 3,200 with a mark of 2:05.28. Garrick finished 10th (2:05.48), Puchalski took 15th (2:11.05), and sophomore Zachary Pawelek finished in 18th (2:11.92). In the 3,200, senior Tanner Updyke took eighth place with a time of 10:12.25.

Junior Ian Rose placed 14th in the discus with a throw of 111-4 and also finished 15th for the shot put with a toss of 38-10. In the triple jump, freshman Andres Gutierrez took 18th place with a distance of 37-5. Junior Carson Tosta finished in 24th in the preliminaries of the 300 hurdles at 49.31.
