Valley Baseball, Boys’ Lacrosse Advance to Shoreline Final

Baseball

The Valley Regional baseball squad kicked off the postseason with a pair of recent games in the Shoreline Conference Tournament. The Warriors earned wins in two contests to move their overall record to 15-6 on the season. Valley also earned a spot in the Shoreline Conference Tournament final at Palmer Field in Middletown on May 29 (after press time).

On May 24, the Warriors earned a 3-2 over Hale-Ray in the Shoreline Conference quarterfinal. Calley was down 2-0 until the fifth inning when Ryan Ellison drew a base on balls, Ben Alexander chopped an infield hit, and Sam Hutchinson smashed a 2-run double to plate Ellison and Alexander and tie the game 2-2. In the seventh, Ellison hit a 1-out double and Hutchinson struck again with a scorching ground ball that caromed off the first baseman’s glove into right field, which allowed pinch runner Michael brooks to score.

The next day, Valley faced off with Morgan and defeated the Huskies in a less dramatic 9-0 victory. Valley scored two runs in the third, two more in the fifth, and five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ellison picked up the win on the mound, pitching six innings and allowing only 2 hits. Andrew Salbinski hit a 2-run double in the third inning. Colin Carver hit a 2-run home run in the fifth inning. Salbinski and Carver got into the action again in the 6th a an RBI single a piece, and Sam Hutchinson drove in two more runs as well.

Softball

The Valley Regional softball squad played in the Shoreline Conference Tournament last week. The Warriors had a contest against Coginchaug in the quarterfinal and lost the matchup. The loss dropped Valley’s overall record to 7-13 on the year.

On May 24, the Warriors headed to Durham to play Coginchaug and took a tough 11-0 loss against the Blue Devils.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Warriors played in a Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinal against Old Lyme last week. Valley earned a narrow 8-7 victory over the Wildcats to advance to the Shoreline Conference final against Haddam- Killingworth at Indian River Complex on May 27, taking an 11-9 loss.

The Warriors were bolstered by the play of Cormac Kline, who scored five goals and dished two assists in the victory. Clark Burleson supplied a goal and two assists. Duncan Rider added a goal, as did Keenan Pindar. Cooper Strecker and Ben Costanzo provided an assist apiece. Costanzo drew 12 face-off wins in the contest, and Axel Johson made 13 saves in net.

Girls’ Tennis

The Warriors saw some solid representation at the Shoreline Conference No. 1-2 singles, No. 3-4 singles, and doubles tournaments on May 24 and May 25.

In the No. 1-2 singles bracket, Ada Ramos made her way all the way to the final where she ultimately lost to Coginchaug’s Piper Remillard. In the No. 3-4 singles bracket, Olivia Baldwin also made a deep run, but lost in the final to Old Lyme’s Samantha Tan.

Ramos and Baldwin earned All-Shoreline Conference First Team honors for their solid play in the tournament. Also Alex Halsey and Joanna Petrone received All-Shoreline Conference Second Team recognition, as well.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Valley girls’ outdoor track squad faced the Shoreline Conference’s best competition at the Championship meet at Old Lyme High School on May 26. The Warriors scored 41.5 points to earn sixth place out of 12 teams.

Madelyn Costello snagged second place in the high jump after clearing 4 feet-10 inches. Riley Burch tied for 11th at a height of 4-4, and Audrey Board tied for 17th after clearing 4-2.

In the long jump, Audrey Lenda claimed third place with a distance of 15-5. Loretta Cecchini came in fifth place in the pole vault by clearing the bar at 7-6.

Ava Cunningham grabbed fifth place in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 13:07.52. Grace Jacaruso came in seventh place in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:46.40

Madelyn Costello turned in a seventh place finish in the 300 hurdles with a time of 53.09. Audrey board took 14th (55.65) and Abby Reardon took 17th (58.30).

The 4x100 relay squad of Addi Marchese, Audrey Lenda, Hanna Babek, and Madeline Jacaruso brought home the bronze with a time of 52.62. In the 4x400, Grace Jacaruso, Brooke Rankin, Emilee Surber, and Madelyn Costello came in seventh with a time of 4:38.35. Valley’s 4x800 relay group of Grace Jacaruso, Rankin, Surber, and Costello finished in fourth with a time of 10:52.22.

In the 200, Madeline Jacaruso came in 10th place with a time of 28.27, and Hanna Babek earned 13th place at 28.61.

In the triple jump, Emma King earned 10th place with a distance of 28-11. In shot put, Chase Conrad claimed eighth place with a toss of 26 feet, Morgan Toth came in 10th with a distance of 23-5. Conrad also threw the discus and came in eighth place with a distance of 67-9. As for javelin, Samantha Vile took eighth place with a distance of 74-2.

Brooke Rankin took 13th place in the 400 with a time of 1:07.88. In the 800, Grace Jacaruso came in 11th place with a time of 2:39.49, while Emily Surber took 24th with a time of 2:48.04.

In the 100 preliminaries, Madeline Jacaruso came in 12th place at 13.59, Audrey Lenda came in 13th at 13.60, Babek placed 17th at 13.90, Addi Marchese came in 18th at 13.95, and Abby Reardon placed 28th at 14.67.

In the prelims for the 100-meter hurdles, Loretta Cecchini and Madelyn Costello tied for 10th with a time of 18.76. Erin Ward came in 16th place with a mark of 19.54.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Valley had a handful of athletes compete in the Shoreline Conference Championship Meet in Old Lyme on May 26. The Warriors came in 11th place with a team score of 14.5 points.

Connor Lunz snagged silver in the shot put with a toss of 42 feet-4 inches, and Lunz also placed fifth in discus with a distance of 109 feet-11 inches.

In the high jump, DiAngelo Jean-Pierre came in sixth place after clearing 5-6, and Jack Driscoll earned ninth place with a height of 5-4.

Additionally, Jean-Pierre came in 12th place in the 100 preliminaries with a time of 11.86, and Jack Driscoll came in 13th at 11.92.

In the 200, Jean Pierre earned 15th place with a time of 24.38.
