Girls’ Lacrosse

The Old Saybrook girls’ lacrosse squad commenced play in the Shoreline Conference tournament last week after wrapping up the regular season with one last game against Morgan. The Rams remained undefeated through 13 regular season games and one postseason game to move to 14-0 on the year.

On May 24, Old Saybrook headed to Indian River Complex to take on Morgan and earned a 12-9 win against the Huskies in the regular season finale.

Lily Cody continued her great scoring with seven goals and two assists. Cody’s assists both fed Chelsea Heinke on the crease, who scored two goals. Laura Day scored twice, while Grace Adams had a goal and two assists. Gilly Hartt made two assists.

Old Saybrook’s defensive unit, led by Bridget Kawecki, some of the heavy lifting in the win through creating turnovers and clearing the ball. Sam Wakelee had perhaps her best game of the season with 17 saves in net.

The next day, the Rams hosted Old Lyme for the semifinal round of the Shoreline Conference Tournament. Old Saybrook scored a 6-3 victory against the Wildcats in their third meeting of the season.

The defense was on display for both squads as it was the lowest scoring contest that Old Saybrook had taken part in this year.

Day dominated the center draw. Day and Adams scored two goals apiece and Cody had one goal and one assist. Heinke scored one goal, and Alexa Coty moving onto attack from defense made one assist in the win.

The Rams’ defensive unit held Old Lyme to just three goals, and Sam Wakelee stopped a determined Old Lyme team in its tracks with several spectacular saves.

The Rams moved on to face North Branford in the Shoreline Conference final on May 27 at Indian River Complex, taking a 9-3 loss.

Additionally, Cody earned the Shoreline Conference’s Most Valuable Player Award for the season and was named to the All-Shoreline Conference First Team along with her teammate Hartt. Kawecki, Day, and Wakelee earned All-Shoreline Conference Second Team honors, as well.
