North Haven’s Track Teams Compete at SCCs; Softball, Girls’ Tennis Lose in Conference Quarters

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The North Haven boys’ outdoor track team competed at the SCC Championship last week and finished in 12th place at the meet. North Haven scored 17 points as a squad on its way to finishing 12th at SCCs, which took place at Bowen Field in New Haven on May 25.

Senior Anthony Vigliotto put forth North Haven’s top showing at the SCC meet by claiming third place in the discus. Vigliotto recorded a distance of 129 feet-11 inches on his way to finishing third in the discus event.

Junior Cole DeCusati took fifth place in the discus (120-11) and finished sixth in the shot put (42-7) at SCCs. Sophomore Ethan Anderson came in seventh place for the shot put with a toss of 41-9.5. In the pole vault, junior Matt O’Connell cleared a height of 10-6 to take seventh place.

Anderson also finished 10th in the discus (113-1) for North Haven. Sophomore Youdef Gebril finished in 11th place for the shot put (40-0.5). Vigliotto took 21st place in the javelin (112-7).

North Haven’s 4x800 relay of senior Aaron Barbiero, senior Nick Howlett, senior Tiernan Neville, and senior Jason Tong finished ninth with a time of 9:12.51. The 4x100 relay featuring junior MJ DeVilliers, Jr., sophomore Daniel-Mark Thomas, Franco, and freshman Derek Ciaburro came in 12th with a time of 47.46.

Franco finished 18th in the long jump (17-10) for North Haven. In the 300 hurdles, senior Ray Lewis finished 20th (48.58), sophomore Matt Crispi placed 21st (48.73), and senior Cam Cargan finished in 25th (49.42).

North Haven had three athletes compete in the preliminaries of the 110 hurdles at the SCC Championship. Crispi finished 14th (19.38), junior Luke Nugent came in 17th place (19.90), and freshman Jake McCrevan finished in 20th place (20.24).

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The North Haven girls’ outdoor track team sent several athletes to compete in the SCC Championship at Bowen Field on May 25. North Haven scored three points and finished in 20th place at the SCC meet.

Freshman Grayce Christoforo turned in North Haven’s best performance at SCCs by taking sixth place in the javelin. Christoforo launched a throw of 86 feet-10 inches to finish sixth in the javelin for North Haven at the meet.

North Haven also saw success in the other throwing events. Freshman Erika Fronte took ninth place in the shot put with a toss of 31 feet. Junior Emily Cocco finished 12th in the shot put (29-2) and placed 14th in the discus (74-10).

Junior Ada Forbes took 10th place in the 800 by running a time of 2:32.89 for North Haven. Sophomore Julia Ball finished 14th for the triple jump with a leap of 31-4.

North Haven’s 4x100 relay of junior Grace Finch, Ball, Forbes, and freshman Jade Lewis finished in 12th place with a time of 55.37. The 4x400 relay of Finch, freshman Anna Mortali, senior Sofia Fappiano, and Forbes also finished 12th by recording a mark of 4:41.98. North Haven’s 4x800 relay of Mortali, senior Taya Stanley, junior Caitlyn McFarland, and sophomore Anna Kattis finished in 12th as well by posting a time of 12:09.98.

Softball

The North Haven softball squad lost a contest to Amity in the SCC Division I Tournament quarterfinals last week. Next up for North Haven is the Class L State Tournament.

On May 24, No. 7 seed North Haven traveled to Woodbridge to take on 2nd-seeded Amity in the quarterfinals of the SCC Division I tourney. The Spartans claimed a 6-1 victory over North Haven to move into the semifinal round.

Amity scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning to go up 1-0. The Spartans went on to score four runs in the fourth to increase their lead to 5-0. Amity tacked on its last run of the game in the fifth, after which North Haven scored its lone run of the game in the fifth for the 6-1 final. Senior Alex Ferriouolo hit a double that drove home the run for North Haven.

North Haven now has an overall record of 11-8 on the year. Head Coach Karen Castagnola’s squad is competing in the Class L State Tournament this week. The tournament began on May 29 (after press time) and will through the championship game that is scheduled to be played on either Friday, June 11 or Saturday, June 12.

Girls’ Tennis

The North Haven girls’ tennis team began postseason play by taking a loss against Lauralton Hall in the quarterfinals of the SCC Division I Tournament last week. North Haven opens play in the Class L State Tournament this week.

North Haven was the No. 5 seed in the SCC Division I Tournament and played a quarterfinal match at No. 4 Lauralton Hall on May 24. The Crusaders won the contest by the final score of 6-1 to advance into the semifinals. Junior Taylor Morris recorded a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the No. 2 singles match for North Haven

North Haven, which has an overall record of 9-8, is playing in the Class L State Tournament this week. The tournament began with first-round play on May 28 (after press time) and culminates with the Thursday, June 3 final.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The North Haven boys’ lacrosse team concluded the 2021 season by playing a pair of road games during the final week of its campaign. North Haven earned a win against St. Paul and then lost to St. Joseph to finish with a record of 3-12 on the year.

North Haven started off the week by claiming a 9-8 victory at St. Paul on May 25. The following day, North Haven was back on the road to face St. Joseph and lost the contest by an 18-5 score.
