Morgan Golf Claims 3rd in Shoreline Championship; Several Other Squads Commence Postseason Play

Boys’ Golf

Morgan competed in the Shoreline Conference Championship at Stanley Golf Course in New Britain on May 25. The Huskies placed in third as a team with a score of 357 on the 18-hole course.

Jason Cohen had a strong day and tied for seventh place with a score of 83. CJ Giuliano tied for 15th place in the standings with a score of 89. Nicholas Schmidt came in 19th with a score of 92, and Andrew Nye finished just one stroke behind him at 93 and one place behind him at 20th. Tyler Greenhouse tied for 32nd place with score of 105.

The next day, it was back to the grind for Morgan. The Huskies played Hale-Ray at Clinton Country Club and earned a 174-215 victory over Hale-Ray. Cohen shot a 39, while Cole Crowley turned in a score of 44. Jack Nye also scored 44 in the match, while Nolan Sullivan hit 47 on the day.

Baseball

The Morgan baseball squad played a pair of Shoreline Conference Tournament matchups last week. The Huskies earned a win and a loss and moved to an overall record of 11-8 on the season.

On May 24, Morgan defeated Haddam-Killingworth by a score of 2-1 in the Shoreline quarterfinal. Pitcher Robbie Zirlis earned the win on the mound for the Huskies going seven innings allowing three hits and striking out seven batters.

On of the big highlights of the contest was Dom Carpenter’s RBI base hit in the fourth inning that came on a 2-2 count.

The next day, the Huskies faced off against Valley and took a 9-0 semifinal defeat against the Warriors.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Huskies completed the regular season before diving directly into the Shoreline Conference Tournament last week. Morgan closed out at home against Old Saybrook and then took on North Branford in the semifinal round of Shorelines. The Huskies lost both contests and their overall record fell to 8-9 on the season.

On May 24, the Huskies lost a 12-9 contest against Old Saybrook. The Huskies couldn’t break through the Rams defenses enough to keep up the scoring pace, despite an outstanding showing from Lindsay Narracci who scored eight goals in the match.

The next day, Morgan went up against North Branford in the semifinal round of Shorelines. North Branford outpaced the Huskies 16-2. Brooke Carlisle and Carley Schmidt each scored goals for Morgan in the loss.

Boys’ Tennis

Morgan saw two representatives compete in the Shoreline Conference No. 1-2 Singles, No. 3-4-5 Singles, and Doubles Tournaments, which took place on May 24 and May 25.

Sophomore captain Joseph Morse came in as the No. 6 seed in the bracket and made it deep into the bracket before losing in the semifinal to Nic Wyszkowski.

Junior captain Tarik Hasic faced off against Portland’s Charpentier in play-in match for the chance to face No. 2 seed Nic Wyskowski of Valley Regional, but was unable to crack the bracket through the play in.

In the No. 3-4-5 tourney, Nicholas Bausch entered the bracket as the No. 11 seed, but lost in the first round against Valley’s Aidan Garrity. Also Steven Kinser won his play-in match and claimed the No. 16 seed to face Westbrook’s Cooper Whitehouse, who would ultimately win the bracket.

The Huskies also had representation in the doubles tournament with the tandem of Darren Abbott and Damian Sevieri at the No. 5 seed. Abbott and Sevieri ended up losing to Westbrook’s Jonah Freund and Ryan Engels.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Huskies had some representation at the Shoreline Conference Championship meet at Old Lyme High School on May 26. Morgan earned 18 points as a team and came in ninth place out of 12 teams.

The 4x100 relay group of Caeley Ayer, Logan Pernal, Glenda Zhiminaicela, and Alexandra Wolf claimed second place with a time of 52.60.

Ayer took sixth place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.41 seconds, and also claimed sixth in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet.

In the 200, Pernal and took 18th place with a time of 29.12, and Anastasia Luke came in 19th at a 29.31 mark. Leah Burdick came in 31st with a time of 33.88.

In the 800, Luke earned 13th place with a time of 2:40.61. In the 1,600, Zhiminaicela earned eighth place at 5:51.56. Kailina Olcott came in 12th place in the javelin with a distance of 65 feet-8 inches.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Morgan sent several competitors to the Shoreline Conference Championship meet in Old Lyme on May 26. The Huskies came in 10 place as a team scoring 25 points.

Tyler Mucha claimed third place in the 400-meter run with a time of 53.85 seconds. Michael Monty took fourth place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.23. Monty also earned seventh place in the 300 hurdles with a mark of 46.86.

The 4x100 relay quartet of Ryan Warner, Sean Cafferty, Fabio Silveira, and Mucha earned fifth place with a time of 46.29.

In the 4x800 relay, the group of Jason Dombkowski, Aiden Maurais, Carter Hayash, and Matthew Menacho came in sixth place with a mark of 9:19.97.

Cafferty took 10th place in the 200 with a time of 24 seconds. Silveira earned 18th place with a time of 24.73, and Alex Gallardo came in 19th at 24.94. Dylon Marshall came in 33rd with a time of 26.13.

In the 1,600, Dombkowski came in 15th with a time of 5:17.91, and Matthew Menacho finished in 17th with a mark of 5:23.76. Dombkowski also competed in the 3,200 and came in 10th place with a time of 11:30.36.

Marshall claimed 12th in the high jump, clearing 5 feet-2 inches.
