Cooper Whitehouse Claims Crown in No. 3-4-5 Shoreline Bracket; Farnoli Earns All-Conference Honors

Boys’ Tennis

The Westbrook boys’ tennis team had some outstanding showings in the Shoreline Conference Tournaments last week. After handing in a perfect season at 18-0 the Knights sent several of its players to compete in the Shoreline Conference No. 1-2 Singles, No. 3-4-5 singles, and Doubles Tournaments on May 24 and 25.

Westbrook’s No. 1 singles player Jesse McGannon earned the No. 3 seed in the No. 1-2 bracket and progressed to the quarterfinal round where he lost a match against Morgan’s Joseph Morse. The Knights’ No. 2 singles player Joey Caslin earned the No. 4 seed and made it to the quarterfinal round as well before losing to East Hampton’s Samuel Gibson.

In the No. 3-4-5 bracket, Knights’ No. 3 player Cooper Whitehouse and No. 4 player Elliot Koplas faced off in the final round. Whitehouse earned the No. 1 seed in the bracket, while Koplas was the No. 3 seed.

Cooper Whitehouse claimed the match win to take the Shoreline Conference No. 3-4-5 Tournament title.

Westbrook’s No. 5 singles player Dan Ruppenicker earned a win in the play-in round to get the No. 15 seed, but lost to No. 2 seed Griffin McGlinchey of Old Lyme.

In the doubles’ bracket, Westbrook’s No. 1 tandem of Mason Malchiodi and Gareth Whitehouse earned the No. 2 seed in the bracket and advanced to the final round. Malchiodi and Gareth Whitehouse ultimately lost the match against Old Lyme’s Tim O’Brien and Regan Kaye.

The Knights’ No. 2 tandem of Jonah Freund and Ryan Engels advanced to the semifinal round, but also lost to the Old Lyme tandem of O’Brien and Kaye.

Girls’ Tennis

The girls’ tennis squad saw several players earn some accolades last week through the Shoreline Conference No. 1-2, No. 3-4, and Doubles Tournaments, which conclude on May 25.

Westbrook No. 1 singles player Julia Farnoli earned a spot in the No. 1-2 bracket, as did Westbrook’s No. 2 singles player Gianni Salisbury.

Westbrook’s No. 1 doubles’ tandem also earned a place in the doubles bracket and advanced all the way to the final round, where they lost to Alexis Fenton and Lauren Wallace of Old Lyme.

Farnoli, Koplas, and Zanzalari all earned All-Shoreline Conference First Team honors, while Salisbury garnered All-Shoreline Conference Second Team Recognition.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Knights competed in the Shoreline Conference Championship meet at Old Lyme High School on May 26. Westbrook came in fifth place out of 12 teams and saw some strong performance all around.

Elizabeth Gallagher came in third place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.15 seconds, and she placed fourth in the 200-meter dash at 26.85 seconds. Gallagher also placed sixth in the 400 with a time of 1:03.73.

Kayla Presley came in 20th place in the 200 with a time of 29.54, while Riley Metcalfe took 23rd with a time of 30.08. Cierra Brundage came in 28th in the 800 with a time of 3:02.1.

In the 3,200, Brook Neri claimed second with a time of 12:40.69, and Marguerite Bartlett came in ninth with a time of 13:40.38.

In the 300 hurdles, Delaney Belcourt came in 16th place with a time of 56.59.

Westbrook’s 4x800 relay quartet of Trinity Micaela Walton-Fosque, Cierra Brundage, Emma Katherine Bransfield, and Emma Baxter came in ninth place with a time of 12:26.88.

In javelin, Lauren Horne earned sixth place with a distance of 79 feet-1 inch, and Bailey Roberts came in ninth with a throw of 68-10.

In the high jump, Megan Geaves took 17th place with a height of 4-2. Halley Pierson took fifth place in the pole vault after clearing 7-6, and Hannah Dorothy Freund earned 14th with a height of 6-6.

Leticia Pires claimed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 15-2.5, and Hannah Dorothy Freund placed 10th with a distance of 14-5. Pierson took 13th with a leap of 14-2.5.

Pires also claimed fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 31-10.5, while Greaves came in 16th with a leap of 26-0.5.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Knights competed in the Shoreline Conference Championship Meet at Old Lyme on May 26 and came away with a ninth place finish out of 11 team and scored 36 points.

Brandon Naccarato took fifth place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.68 seconds.

Luca Troop earned fifth place in the 200 with a time of 23.65, and Brenden Engels came in 26th with a time of 25.64. Zachary Boardman came in 30th with a time of 25.74.

Cole Strzelecki came in 14th in the 800 with a time of 2:23.21, and Jonathan Brajczewski took 16th at 2:32.61.

In the 3,200, Gregory Araya came in 13th with a time of 11:55.98. In the 300 hurdles, Hever Gomez took 10th place with a time of 50.43.

The 4x100 relay group of Boardman, Naccarato, Engels, and Troop took second place with a time of 45.58.

Andrew Carter earned 11th in javelin with a throw of 107.

Brett Metcalfe claimed second place in the high jump clearing 5-10, while Luca Troop claimed second place in the long jump with a leap of 20-3.5. Naccarato came in 15th with a distance of 15-4.5.

In the triple jump, Naccarato took ninth place with a distance of 36-6.
