Barnette Takes 2nd in Two Events in SCCs; Boys’ Golf Competes at Conference Championship

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Branford boys’ outdoor track team competed at last week’s SCC Championship and finished in 10th place at the meet. The Hornets scored 26 points on their way to taking 10th place at the SCC meet, which took place at Bowen Field in New Haven on May 25.

Senior Mekhi Barnette scored points in three jumping events for the Hornets at SCCs. One week after winning the high jump at the SCC West Sectional Championship, Barnette claimed second place in the event at the SCC Championship with the same height of 5 feet-10 inches. Barnette only placed behind Hand junior Morgan Veth, who won the high jump by clearing 6 feet.

Barnette also earned runner-up honors in the long jump at SCCs. Barnette reached a distance of 20-9 to take second place in the long jump behind Fairfield Prep senior Joshua Bacon (21-4). Barnette also finished fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 41-3 for the Hornets.

Sophomore Avery Atkinson took sixth place in the javelin with a throw of 140-8 for Branford. Sophomore Evan Bouley finished eighth for the pole vault by clearing a height of 10-6.

Branford’s 4x400 relay of senior Julio Tozetto, junior Patrick Zdunek, junior Cheng Wu, and junior Peyton Moriarty came in seventh place with a time of 3:37.36. The Hornets’ 4x800 relay featuring Tozetto, sophomore Massimo Corrick, senior Patricia Banegas, and Wu also took seventh place at 9:01.65.

Senior Ryan Hanniford finished 10th in the pole vault (10-0) for the Hornets. Junior Patrick Zdunek took 11th place in the 800 (2:05.66). In the 1,600, junior Wes Raymond came in 12th place (4:40.85), and Moriarty finished in 17th place (4:44.58).

Atkinson finished 12th (46.23) in the 300 hurdles, while senior Ryan Hanniford took 15th place (46.89) for the event. Hanniford also finished ninth in the preliminaries of the 110 hurdles with a time of 17.62. Sophomore Ryder Kropiwnicki finished 16th in the javelin with a throw of 119-6.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Branford girls’ outdoor track team sent a handful of athletes to compete at the SCC Championship at Bowen Field on May 25. The Hornets scored nine points to finish in 16th place at the meet.

Freshman Tess Wasiolek took fifth place in the 800-meter run for Branford at SCCs. Wasiolek clocked in with a time of 2:26.47 on her way to finishing in fifth for the 800.

Fellow freshman Joelle Budz turned in a solid showing for the Hornets at the SCC Championship. Budz ran a time of 13.53 seconds to place fifth in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash and then finished sixth for the finals with a time of 13.75. In the 200-meter dash, Budz took seventh place by running a time of 27.79.

Budz also ran on Branford’s 4x100 relay at SCCs. The Hornets’ quartet of freshman Chayse Gueco, junior Katie Laska, sophomore Samantha Burzynski, and Budz recorded a mark of 53.63 to take ninth place.

Senior Jennifer Hincapie placed in a couple of throwing events for Branford. Hincapie finished in 20th place for the discus with a toss of 63 feet and also finished 20th in the javelin with a distance of 67-6.

Boys’ Golf

The Branford boys’ golf team competed at the SCC Championship at Race Brook Country Club in Orange on May 25. The Hornets posted a team score of 377 to finish in ninth place at the SCC meet. Fairfield Prep took first place with a score of 323, just one stroke ahead of runner-up Hand with a 324.

Senior Billy Linder shot an 87 to lead the Branford pack at SCCs. Junior Justin Acquarulo shot a 96, sophomore Colin Deane also finished with a 96, sophomore Keegan LaLonde shot a 97, and senior Finn Thompson scored a 104.

All of the teams at the SCC meet played an 18-hole round, instead of the nine holes that they play during the regular season. Branford finished with a record of 12-2 in the regular season this year.
