Westbrook Boys’ Tennis Posts Undefeated Regular Season; Girls’ Tennis Notches 15 Wins

Boys’ Tennis

The Westbrook boys’ tennis team secured an undefeated regular season after claiming two more victories in last week’s action. The Knights earned wins against Coginchaug and Valley Regional to move to an 18-0 record on the year.

On May 17, Westbrook hosted Coginchaug and earned a 6-0 over the Blue Devils. At the No. 1 singles spot, Jesse McGannon earned a 6-0, 6-0 win, while at the No. 2 position, Cooper Whitehouse claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Elliot Koplas at No. 3, Daniel Ruppenicker at No. 4, and Erik DeSousa at No. 5 all claimed victories via forfeit.

The No. 1 doubles team of Mason Malchiodi and Jonah Freund got a win via forfeit as well. Neither team had the requisite players for a No. 2 doubles match.

Two days later, Westbrook sealed the deal on the undefeated regular season with a 5-2 home win against Valley Regional.

Joey Caslin took a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 2 singles spot, while Cooper Whitehouse claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3. Koplas claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 4 position. As for doubles matches, Malchiodi and Gareth Whitehouse earned a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 1 spot, and Freund and Ryan Engels claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 2 position.

Girls’ Tennis

The Knights added two more wins to their tally to finish out the year with a 15-2 record. Westbrook’s only two losses came against Old Lyme, which is the top-ranked Class S team in the state. The Knights’ wins this week were over Coginchaug and Valley Regional.

On May 17, Westbrook claimed a 5-2 road win over the Blue Devils. Gianni Salisbury grabbed a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the No. 2 spot, and Ava Ciarcia claimed a 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 3 position. Jami Sacco grabbed a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at the No. 4 spot.

As for doubles, Adriana Stranieri and Olivia Palumbo earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 2 spot, while Caroline Dias and Marlee Archer got the 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 3 position.

Two days later, the Knights headed to Deep River where they beat Valley 4-3 in a close match. Westbrook only managed one singles win in Salisbury earning the 6-1, 6-3 victory at the No. 2 spot. As for doubles, all three Westbrook pairings grabbed victories.

Bree Koplas and Xan Zanzalari earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 1 spot, while Palumbo and Stranieri earned a 6-3, 6-0 win, and Dias and Archer claimed a 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 3 position.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Knights had a pair of recent meets and recorded some solid results. On May 14, Westbrook headed to North Branford to compete against the Thunderbirds.

Elizabeth Gallagher earned first place the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.0 seconds, and win the 200 in 27.0 seconds. Marguerite Bartlett took first in the 1,600 with a time of 6:04. Delaney Belcourt claimed first place in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles with times of in 20.75 and 57.0, respectively.

Allison Brajczewski earned second in the 100 hurdles at 20.79, and she took third place in the 300 hurdles with a time of 1:03.

Ava Kaluski earned third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 21.9. Kayla Prisley took third in the 100 in 14.2 and snagged second in the 400 in 1:14. Emma Baxter took third in 400 with a time of 1:15. In the 800, Cierra Brundage finished second with a time of 2:56.

Leticia Pires had a great day taking first in long jump with a leap of 13 feet-9.5 inches, first in the triple jump with a distance of 30 feet-6 inches, and third in javelin with a throw of 57 feet-11 inches.

Also in the long jump, Halley Pierson took second with a leap of 13, while Hannah Freund took third with a distance of 12-6.5. Bailey Roberts took first in shot with a toss of 17-4, second in discus at 73-5, and second in javelin at 68-11.

Lauren Horne claimed first in javelin with a distance of 74-11, and she took first in discus in at 73-5.

On May 18, Westbrook had a home contest against Portland.

Gallagher won the 400 with a time of 61.0. Brooke Neri won the 3,200 with a time of 12:53 and Bartlett came in second at 13:10. Both runners will meet in states with those qualifying times.

Brundage took third in the 800 with a time of 2:52. Riley Metcalfe won the 200 with a time of 29.8, and she earned second in the 100 with a time of 14.3.

Belcourt came in second in the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles in 20.6 and 54.9, respectively, while Brajczewski ended up in third in the 100 hurdles at 20.8 as well as third in the 300 hurdles at 1:04.

Pierson won the pole vault clearing 7, and Freund came in third with a height of 6-6. Fruend also earned second in the long jump with a distance of 14-9.

Horne took first in javelin with a distance of 85, as well as second in discus with a throw of 67-4

Roberts earned second in javelin at 71-10.

Pires claimed first in the long jump with a states-qualifying jump of 15, and she also took first in the triple jump with a distance of 31-10. Megan Greaves came in third in the triple jump at 28-5.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Knights faced off with North Branford and Portland in a couple of recent meets.

On May 14, Westbrook headed to North Branford where the Knights recorded some notable marks.

Hever Gomez took first in the 110 hurdles, as well as the 300 hurdles with times of 21.7 seconds and 51.9 seconds, respectively.

Luca Troop took first in the 100 with a time of 11.6, first in the 200 at 24. Troop also claimed first place in the long jump with a distance of 18 feet-2.5 inches.

Brandon Naccarato took second in the 100 with a time of 12, and he also earned second in the high jump clearing of 5-2. Zach Boardman took third in the 100 at 12.7.

Greg Araya claimed first in the 1,600 at 5:22. Cole Strzelecki earned first in the 800 with a time of 2:18. Jonathan Brajczewski took third in the 800 with a mark of 2:30.

Andrew Carter claimed first in the shot put with a distance of 29-6.5, first in the discus at 77-4, and first in javelin with a Shoreline qualifying throw of 117-4.

Reilly Peterson second in the shot put, second in discus, and third in javelin with throws of 24-4, 71-3, and 78-1, respectively. Ben Wallace took second in the javelin with a throw of 106-11. Wallace also earned second in the long jump with a leap of 15, and he took third in discus with a hurl of 67-8.

Brett Metcalfe was earned first in high jump clearing 5-4.

On May 18, the Knights hosted Portland, where the 4x100 quartet of Boardman, Naccarato, Brenden Engels, and Troop claimed first place with a time of 45.3.

Troop also took first in the 200 with a time of 23.2, and he also earned first in the long jump with a distance of 20.

Cole Strzelecki claimed first place in the 800 with a time of 2:27.

Engels took second in the 200 with a time of 24.9, and Boardman earned third with a mark of 25.0.

Gomez claimed second in 110 hurdles with a mark of 19.5, and took second in 300 hurdles at 48.0.

Carter earned second in the 100 with a Shoreline qualifying time of 12.4. Carter also claimed second in javelin with a throw of 118-6 and third in shot put with a distance of 31-2.

Araya qualified for Shorelines in the 3,200 with a time of 11:52. Wallace earned third in the javelin with a throw of 109-6. Brajczewski took second in the 800 with a time of 2:34. Naccarato won the triple jump in his first attempt at the event with a leap of 33-9, and he finished third in the long jump with a distance of 18-2.

Baseball

Westbrook played three games last week and came away with a win and two losses on the run marking its first win of the season. With these results, the Knights moved to 1-17 on the year.

On May 17, the Knights hosted North Branford and took a 7-1 defeat against the Thunderbirds.

Two days later, Westbrook headed to Morgan and lost a 12-4 contest versus the Huskies.

On May 21, the Knights earned a narrow 8-7 victory against Portland.
