Warriors’ Softball Wins Shoreline Opener; Boys’ Lacrosse Secures Two More Victories

Softball

The Valley Regional softball team had four games on the slate last week and came away with two wins, the most important of which was the Warriors’ 5-2 victory over East Hampton-Portland in the Shoreline Conference Tournament first round. With these results, Valley’s overall record on the year moved to 7-12 on the season.

On May 17, the Warriors lost an 11-3 road contest against Coginchaug. Coginchaug got out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but the Warriors cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the third. Coginchaug added three more runs in the bottom of the frame for a 7-2 advantage. The Blue Devils added one run in the fourth and the fifth innings. The Warriors would only plate one more run in the top of the sixth, and Coginchaug added two more in the bottom of the inning to take the 11-3 lead that would ultimately stick. Lexi Ross had a hit, a steal, and a run in the loss.

Two days later, the Warriors earned an 11-10 home victory over Old Saybrook. After the first inning, both teams were tied at 1-1, but Old Saybrook added two runs in the top of the second. Valley scored seven runs in the bottom of the frame to make it 8-3. Old Saybrook added four runs in the fourth to close the gap to 8-7, and then the Rams took a 10-8 lead in the top of the fifth. Valley tied the game 10-10 in the bottom of the fifth and ultimately got the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Ross went 3-for-4 with a triple and three runs scored in the victory. Abby Amara went 4-for-4 with a double, a run, and an RBI.

On May 21, Valley hosted Old Lyme and took an 8-7 loss against the Wildcats. Old Lyme put two runs on the board in the first and after the bottom of the frame Valley trailed 2-1. The Wildcats added another run in the second inning, but the Warriors tied the game up 3-3 after the third. Old Lyme added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-3 lead, but Valley tied it 5-5 with a two-run fifth inning. The Wildcats took an 8-5 lead in the top of the seventh, and though the Warriors tried to mount a comeback with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, they came up just a little bit short in the 8-7 final. Ross supplied two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored, while Amara had two hits, two runs, and an RBI.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Valley boys’ lacrosse team played a pair of games last week and took home victories in both contests. With the wins, the Warriors’ regular season record ended up at 10-4.

On May 18, Valley scored a 13-9 home win over Morgan. Duncan Rider had a big game scoring seven goals and providing three assists in the victory. Cormac Kline also put up the points with four goals and four assists. Clark Burleson added two assists, as did Jackson Bisson. Reece Whitney had an assist, and Cooper Strecker scored a goal. Ben Costanzo won 14 draws, Bisson collected six face-offs. Axel Johnson made 15 saves in the victory.

On May 21, the Warriors headed to Old Saybrook and took down the Rams by a score of 16-4. Rider supplied five goals and five assists in the win, while Kline scored five goals and added three assists. Burleson scored four goals to go with two assists, and Strecker added six assists in the win. Leif Duval and Costanzo had an assist each. Costanzo won 10 face-offs, and Bisson claimed eight draws. Johnson made 12 saves on the day.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Valley girls’ lacrosse team played five matches as part of last week’s action and came away with two wins and three losses. With these results, the Warriors’ record for the regular season moved to 4-9.

On May 17, Valley claimed a 19-10 home victory over Haddam- Killingworth. The Warriors saw a big game from Emi Bisson, who notched six goals and three assists in the win. Rowan Pilon tallied five goals and three assists. Salmi Miller scored three goals, while Sage Lepore added two. Olivia Cunningham scored three goals and provided one assist, and Abby Shakun dished one assist.

The next day, the Warriors took a 13-12 road loss against Morgan. Bisson scored six goals, while Miller added three goals and three assists. Cunningham supplied two goals and one assist, while Pilon and Madison Neviaser had an assist apiece. Lepore provided a goal in the defeat.

On May 20, Valley claimed a lopsided 20-5 victory over Wolcott.

The next day, the Warriors took a 17-9 defeat against Old Saybrook. Bisson had another solid showing with three goals and three assists. Pilon scored two goals, while Miller and Cunningham tallied a goal apiece.

On May 22, the Warriors lost a 16-5 road contest against North Branford.

Boys’ Tennis

The Warriors played three matches last week, and Valley came away from the slate with two wins and one loss. With these results, the Warriors regular season record moved to 12-3 on the year.

On May 17, Valley hosted Cromwell and notched a 7-0 win over the Panthers. Two days later, the Warriors headed to Westbrook where they took a 5-2 defeat against an undefeated Knights’ squad. On May 21, Valley claimed a 6-1 home victory against Old Saybrook.

Girls’ Tennis

Valley had three matches scheduled last week and earned two victories on the slate. With these results, the Warriors’ record moved to 10-5 for the regular season.

On May 17, Valley headed to Cromwell where they secured a 5-2 road win over the Panthers. Two days later, the Warriors dropped a narrow 4-3 home match against Westbrook. On May 21, Valley claimed a 5-2 road win against Old Saybrook.

Boys’ Golf

The Warriors played two matches last week and lost the pair. With the defeats, Valley’s record drops to 2-9 on the season.

On May 18, the Warriors headed to Black Birch Golf Course where they took a 199-245 defeat against Hale-Ray. Two days later, Valley hosted Coginchaug at Black Hall Golf Club and dropped a 177-239 match against the Blue Devils.
