Old Saybrook Softball Gains a Split; Girls’ Lacrosse Stays Perfect

Softball

The Old Saybrook softball team played a busy slate of four contests last week and came away with a split. With these results, Old Saybrook’s record moved to 5-13 on the season.

On May 17, the Rams lost an 8-2 contest against Haddam- Killingworth. H-K got out to a 4-0 lead after the third inning and added to that advantage with four more runs in the fifth. Old Saybrook added a pair of runs in the sixth to make it 8-2. Ella Hagelston went 2-for-3 in the loss, while the Rams received hits from Cassie Johnson, Kate Heiden, and Julia Dwire. Christina Lombardi and Kendall Kollmer scored the team’s two runs.

Two days later, the Rams lost a narrow 11-10 road contest against Valley Regional. After the first inning, both teams were tied at 1-1, and while Old Saybrook added two runs in the top of the second, Valley scored seven runs in the bottom of the frame to make it 8-3. Old Saybrook added four runs in the fourth to close the gap to 8-7, and the Rams took a 10-8 lead in the top of the fifth. Valley tied the game 10-10 in the bottom of the fifth and ultimately got the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Lombardi was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, and Kollmer went 4-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Sophia Barker went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Jenna Tully was 4-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Cassie Johnson knocked two base hits to go with a run and an RBI. Hagelston grabbed a base hit.

On May 20, Old Saybrook earned an 11-3 home win against Morgan. The Rams held a 2-1 lead after the first inning, and by the end of the second it was 3-2 in favor of Old Saybrook. The Rams put six runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach for good. After five innings the score was 10-3, and Old Saybrook tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth.

Lombardi had three hits, two runs, and an RBI, while Hagelston added three hits, two runs, and two RBI. Mackenna Cooke went 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI. Kollmer was 2-for-2, and Johnson had two hits, a run, and an RBI. Dwire earned the win on the mound.

Two days later, the Rams played another game against Morgan and this time claimed a 9-5 road win against the Huskies. Morgan held a 2-1 lead after one inning, and the Huskies added to that margin in the third to make it 4-1. In the top of the fourth, Old Saybrook’s bats came alive and scored six runs to make it 7-4, and Morgan made it 7-5 in the bottom of the frame. Old Saybrook added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth en route to the victory.

Lombardi had two hits and three runs scored, Kelly Walsh also had a couple base knocks with two runs scored. Barker had two hits and an RBI, while Heiden had a hit and a run.

Baseball

The Rams played just two games as part of last week’s action. Old Saybrook lost both contests and its record dropped to 5-13 on the season as a result.

On May 17, the Rams lost a 4-0 road game against Haddam-Killingworth. Two days later, Old Saybrook hosted Valley Regional and took a 4-1 defeat against the Warriors.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Old Saybrook girls’ lacrosse team had three more games last week and ended up with three more wins to its credit. The Rams moved to 12-0 on season after claiming wins over Haddam-Killingworth, Old Lyme, and Valley Regional.

On May 18, the Rams hosted Haddam-Killingworth and claimed a 17-8 victory over the Cougars.

Two days later, Old Saybrook took a 15-8 home victory over Old Lyme. Then on May 21, the Rams headed to Deep River for a contest against Valley Regional and earned a 17-9 win against the Warriors.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Old Saybrook had four games on the schedule last week and ended up losing all four games. With the defeats, the Rams’ record fell to 1-12 on the year.

On May 18, Old Saybrook had a road contest against Haddam-Killingworth and lost to the Cougars 16-3. Two days later, the Rams headed to Old Lyme where they took a 9-7 defeat against the Wildcats.

On May 21, Old Saybrook hosted Valley Regional and dropped a 16-4 decision against the Warriors.

The next day, the Rams lost a 12-4 home game against Morgan.

Boys’ Golf

The Rams played just one match last week and took a loss in the contest. Old Saybrook’s record dropped to 4-8 on the season.

On May 20, the Rams lost a 154-193 road match against the top team in the Shoreline Conference, Portland.

Girls’ Tennis

Old Saybrook played three matches last week and came away with a win and two losses on the slate. With these results, the Rams’ record on the season moved to 4-11 on the season. On May 17, the Rams hosted Haddam- Killingworth and earned a 4-3 win against the Cougars. Two days later, Old Saybrook hosted Cromwell and took a 5-2 loss to the Panthers. On May 21, Old Saybrook lost to Valley Regional in a 5-2 home match.

Boys’ Tennis

The Rams had three matches on the schedule last week and took losses in all three. With the defeats, Old Saybrook’s record dropped to 1-13 on the season.

On May 17, the Rams lost a 5-2 road match against Haddam-Killingworth. Two days later, Old Saybrook lost a 6-1 road match against Cromwell. On May 21, the Rams lost a 6-1 decision against Valley Regional.
