Guilford’s Tennis Squads, Girls’ Lacrosse Storming Into the Playoffs

Girls' Tennis

The Guilford girls' tennis team earned wins in both of its matchups last week to post an overall record of 11-5 for the regular season this spring.

On May 18, Guilford hosted Lauralton Hall and won the match by a 5-2 final. In singles play, senior Hannah Dietzko won a 7-5, 6-3 decision; sophomore Riley Mullett claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win; senior Emma Mullett won 6-0, 6-0; and freshman Molly Peterson notched a 6-0, 6-1 victory. The doubles team of senior Veronica Zimmer and freshman Kendall Mulligan won a three-setter by the final tally of 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

One day later, the Grizzlies defeated Mercy 6-1 at home. Dietzko won her singles match 6-1, 6-1; Riley Mullett and Emma Mullett both won their respective matches 6-0, 6-0; and freshman Kallie Kagan recorded a 6-0, 6-0 victory. The doubles team of senior Kiera Stankewich and Zimmer won 6-3, 6-3, while the duo of senior Claire Pringle and freshman Kendall Mulligan notched a 6-1, 6-3 win.

Guilford opened the playoffs as the No. 3 seed in the SCC Division I Tournament and hosted No. 6 Cheshire in the quarterfinal round on May 24 (after press time). With a victory, Guilford would advance to play at No. 2 seed Hand in the semifinals on May 25 (after press time). The SCC Division I final was on May 26 (after press time).

After SCCs, the Grizzlies will compete in the Class L State Tournament on Friday, May 28.

Boys' Tennis

The Guilford boys' tennis team finished its regular season at 9-7 overall after earning a win versus Xavier during the final week of play.

The Grizzlies claimed a 4-3 victory versus Xavier at Guilford High School on May 17, sweeping all four singles matches on their way to the win. Senior Walker Mulligan won a 6-0, 6-3 decision; junior Dominic Dadak earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory; senior Ethan DeAngelo netted a 6-2, 6-1 victory; and senior Ronan McDermott came out on top by the final score of 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.

Guilford is the No. 5 seed in the SCC Division I Tournament and played a quarterfinal match at

No. 4 Fairfield Prep on May 24 (after press time). If the Grizzlies won, they played at No. 1 seed Hand in the semis on May 25 (after press time). The championship match was on May 26 (after press time).

When SCCs are finished, Guilford will compete in the Class L State Tournament that begins on Friday, May 28.

Girls' Lacrosse

The Guilford girls' lacrosse team ended its regular season with a 21-9 home victory against Hand on May 18. The Grizzlies posted a record of 13-2 for regular-season play and will open the postseason by competing in the SCC Division I

Tournament this week.

Senior Hannah Tillier led the Grizzlies with six goals in their win over Hand, while sophomore MJ Santa Barbara scored four goals in the game. Freshman Payton Root tallied three goals with two assists. Juniors Maddie Epke, Taylor Farace, and Lorelei King each scored two goals. Senior Izzy Gurnham and junior Caroline Kane added one goal apiece for Head Coach Wendy Epke's club.

Top-seeded and defending champion Guilford began the SCC Division I

Tournament with a quarterfinal home game versus No. 5 seed Lauralton Hall on May 25 (after press time) With a win, the Grizzlies would face the winner of No. 2 Cheshire and No. 3

Hand for the title at Ken Strong Stadium at West Haven High School on Thursday, May 27 at 5 p.m.

Following SCCs, Guilford will compete in the Class M State Tournament that starts on Friday, May 28.

Boys' Lacrosse

The Guilford boys' lacrosse team finished with a record of 3-12 this year after taking two defeats last week.

Guilford took a 9-2 road loss to Hand on May 17. Senior Aedan McDermott and sophomore Will Petrick scored the Grizzlies' goals in the game. Junior goalie Harry Loyd made 12 saves in net.

Two days later, Guilford hosted Cheshire and lost to the Rams by a 13-8 score in its season finale.

Boys' Golf

The Guilford boys' golf team split a pair of matches during the last week of the regular season to finish with a mark of 6-8 on the year.

On May 17, the Grizzlies defeated Jonathan Law by the final score of 161-201 at Madison Country Club, marking Guilford's lowest team score of the season.

Two days later, Guilford competed against Notre Dame-West Haven at Race Brook Country Club and lost the contest by the final score of 147-166.

Softball

The Guilford softball squad lost both of its contests last week to complete its season with an overall record of 7-11.

The Grizzlies dropped a 5-4 decision at West Haven on May 17.

Freshman Addison Smith hit a two-run double in the fifth inning that gave Guilford the lead at the time. Senior Carissa Ross went 2-for-3 in the game.

Guilford finished its campaign by taking a 12-0 defeat at Cheshire on May 19. Freshman Anna Fagan had a hit for the Grizzlies.

Baseball

The Guilford baseball team finished its season by taking two losses last week to put its final record on the year at 2-16.

On May 17, the Grizzlies traveled to Madison and lost to Hand by a 5-3 score. Senior Jack Palmer and junior Mike Torre combined for five hits and two RBI in the loss.

In its season finale, Guilford took a 12-1 home loss against North Haven on May 19.
