The Westbrook boys’ tennis squad had three more matches on the slate last week and earned three victories in the contests. The wins moved the Knights’ record to 16-0 on the season.
On May 10, Westbrook headed to Portland and claimed a 7-0 road victory over the Highlanders.
Jesse McGannon earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 1 singles position, while Joey Caslin claimed a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot. At the No. 3 position, Cooper Whitehouse earned a 6-0, 6-2 win. Elliot Koplas at No. 4 and Daniel Ruppernicker at No. 5 both gained victories via forfeit.
The No. 1 tandem of Mason Malchiodi and Gareth Whitehouse earned a 6-0, 6-1, and Ryan Engels and Eric DeSousa took a win by forfeit at the No. 2 doubles spot.
Two days later, the Knights headed to Old Lyme and earned a narrow 4-3 win over the Wildcats. Caslin (6-2, 6-2), Cooper Whitehouse (6-4, 6-3), Koplas (6-1, 6-1), and Freund and Engels (6-0, 6-0) all claimed wins in their matchups.
On May 14, Westbrook earned a 7-0 home win over East Hampton. McGannon (6-1, 6-3), Caslin (6-4, 6-4), Cooper Whitehouse (6-2, 6-0), Elliot Koplas (6-0, 6-0), and Ruppenicker (6-2, 6-2) earned singles wins.
Malchiodi and Gareth Whitehouse (6-1, 6-0) and Freund and Engels (6-0, 6-0) claimed doubles wins in the victory.
Girls’ Tennis
Westbrook played three matches as part of last week’s schedule and came away with two wins and one loss. With these results, the Knights’ record moved to 13-2.
On May 10, the Knights headed to North Branford where they claimed a 6-1 road victory over the Thunderbirds. Two days later, Westbrook hosted Old Lyme and lost a 6-1 match against the Wildcats. On May 12, the Knights earned a 5-2 home win over East Hampton.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Westbrook girls’ outdoor track team had a couple of recent meets where several athletes turned in some notable marks.
On May 6, the Knights headed to Old Lyme for a dual meet. In the 100-meter hurdles Westbrook swept first through third place with Delaney Belcourt in claiming first with a Shoreline Conference Championship meet qualifying time of 20.9 seconds. Allison Brajczewski came in second with a time of 22.1, and Ava Kaluski took third with a mark of 22.4.
Belcourt also won the 300 hurdles with a Shoreline qualifying time of 56.6.
Brooke Neri won the 1,600 with a time of 5:47 and qualified for the Class S State Championship meet, and Marguerite Bartlett earned third with a Shorelines qualifying time of 6:04.
Cierra Brundage took third in the 800 with a time of 3:01. Elizabeth Gallagher won the 200 with a time of 26.7, and Kayla Prisely took third place with a time of 30.4.
Leticia Pires won the long jump with a leap of 13 feet-1.5 inches, and she also claimed first in the triple jump with a shoreline qualifying distance of 29 feet-5.5 inches. Megan Greaves took second in the triple jump with a shoreline qualifying leap of 27-5.5. Additionally, Greaves came in third in the high jump at 4 feet.
Lauren Horne came first in the discus with a throw of 68 feet, and she also took second in the javelin with a throw of 80 feet-9 inches. Bailey Roberts claimed second in the shot put with a throw of 18-1.5, and she finished in second place in the discus with a throw of 60-4. Hannah Freund took first the pole vault clearing a height of 7 feet.
On May 11, the Knights hosted Morgan for another dual meet.
In the 100 hurdles, Belcourt took first place with a time of 20.3, Brajczewski earned a Shoreline qualifier of 20.7 came in second, and Kaluski came in third with a mark of 21.7.
Additionally, Belcourt won the 300 hurdles with a time of 55.75.
Neri won the 1,600 with a time of 5:50. Trinity Walton Fosque was second in the 400 with a time of 1:19.
Bartlett won the 800 with a Shorelines qualifying time of 2:44, Emma Baxter was second at 3:00, and Brundage came in third at 3:01. Gallagher won the 200 with a time of 26.3, and Prisley came in third with a time of 29.2.
Horne took first place in the discus with a throw of 61-2, and also claimed first javelin with a hurl of 76-9. Roberts took second in the discus with a throw of 57-4.5, came in third in the shot put with a heave of 18-5.5, and took second in the javelin with a throw of 67-5.5.
Freund won the pole vault after clearing 6-feet, and she also won the long jump in her first attempt with a Shorelines qualifying leap of 14-6.
Pires won the triple jump and qualified for states with a jump of 31-7, and she also earned second in the long jump with a Shorelines qualifying leap of 14-4.5. Greaves took first place in the high jump, clearing 4-4, and she also came in second in the triple jump with a distance of 28-1.25.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Knights competed in a pair of dual meets recently. On May 6, Westbrook was at Old Lyme, and there were several strong marks turned in by the Knights’ competitors.
The 4x100-meter relay quartet of Zach Boardman, Brandon Naccarato, Brenden Engles, and Luca Troop claimed first place with a time of 46.8 seconds. Troop also took first in the 200 with a time of 23.3, and he earned first place in the long jump with a leap of 19-7.
Engels came in third in the 200 in with a time of 25.3.
Hever Gomez took first place in both the 110 and 300 hurdles with times of 20.9 and 49.0, respectively.
Andrew Carter earned third in the 100 with a time of 12.4. Greg Araya came in third in the 1,600 with a time of 5:25.
Cole Strzelecki claimed second in the 800 with a time of 2:22, and Jonathan Brajczewski took third in 2:27. Brett Metcalfe took first place in the high jump with a height of 5-4, and Naccarato came in second with a leap of 5 feet.
Ben Wallace took first place in javelin with a throw of 111, and Carter took third with a throw of 99.
On May 11, Morgan was at Westbrook for another dual meet.
The 4x100 team of Boardman, Naccarato, Engles, and Troop finished first with a time of 45.8 seconds.
Troop won the 400 with a time of 53.8, and also took first in the long jump with a leap of 18-3.5.
Naccarato won the 100 with a state qualifying time of 11.2, he also took second in the long jump with a distance of 17.and Brandon Naccarato was second in the high jump after clearing 5 feet.
Gomez claimed second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 20.7, and also took second in the 300 hurdles a time of 51.
Strzelecki took first in the 800 with a time of 2:22, and Brajczewski claimed second in 2:25. Boardman earned second in the 200 with a mark of 25, and Engels came in third with a time of 25.1, both times were Shorelines qualifiers.
Carter won the shot put with a throw of 30-1.5, took first in the discus with a heave of 63-5, and came in second in the javelin with a distance of 104-6, as well. Reilly Peterson took second in the shot put with a toss of 26-1.5.
Wallace won the javelin with a throw of 109-9 and took second in the discus with a throw of 62-11.5.
Metcalfe won the high jump with a state qualifying jump of 5-8.
Araya took third in the 1,600 with a time of 5:22.
Baseball
The Knights played a pair of games as part of last week’s action. Westbrook took a pair of losses on the slate. The defeat moved the Knights’ record to 0-15 on the year.
On May 12, Westbrook headed to Old Lyme and lost a 12-2 contest against the Wildcats. Two days later, Westbrook hosted Hale-Ray and dropped an 11-1 affair against the Noises.
