Valley Baseball Continues Strong Year at 11-4; Golf Squad Grabs Win Over H-K

Baseball

The Valley Regional baseball team played three games last week and ended up with a pair of wins and a loss on the slate. With these results, the Warriors’ record moved to 11-4 on the campaign.

On May 10, Valley hosted Haddam-Killingworth and claimed a 5-2 home victory over the Cougars. H-K took an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, and the score would remain 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth when Valley’s offense went off for five runs.

Braeden Sparaco earned the win by pitching a complete game on the mound for the Warriors.

In the sixth, Andrew Salbinski reached on a one-out error, and Colin Carver notched a single to put two runners. Kyle Metz then laced a double to score a run. Jason Malli pinch hit and drew a walk with a discerning eye to load the bases. Sam Helsel cleared the bases with a triple, and James Marsden knocked in Helsel with a sac fly to make it 5-2.

Sparaco pitched a clean seventh inning to earn the win.

Two days later, the Warriors grabbed a 7-1 win against East Hampton. The Bellringers got on the board in the first inning, but Valley retook the lead in the bottom of the lead to make it 2-1. Valley scored another run in the second and two runs each in the fourth and sixth innings.

Carver claimed the win on the bump for his fourth on the season. Helsel went 3-for-4 with three RBI, and Sam Hutchinson went 2-for-3 with a two run triple in the sixth inning.

On May 13, the Warriors dropped 6-4 road contest against Cromwell. Ryan Ellison took the loss on the mound. Hutchinson and Carver had two hits apiece in the defeat.

Softball

The Warriors had four games on the slate last week and came away with a split of the contests. With these results, Valley record moved to 4-10 on the season.

On May 10, the Warriors lost a narrow 4-3 road contest against Haddam-Killingworth in extra innings. H-K got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the third inning. Valley tied it up with a run in the top of the fourth. The Warriors took a 2-1 lead with a run in the sixth, but H-K tied it in the bottom of the frame. Valley went up 3-2 in the top of the eight inning, but H-K was able to get the walk-off win with a pair of run in the bottom of the inning.

The next day, Valley took a 1-0 forfeit win over Westbrook.

On May 12, the Warriors claimed a 9-0 win against East Hampton-Portland. The next day, the Warriors lost a 15-0 home game against Cromwell.

Golf

Valley played two matches last week and ended up with a split between the two contests. With these results, the Warriors’ record moved to 2-7 on the season.

Valley hosted Haddam-Killingworth on May 11 at the Black Hall Golf Club. The Warriors earned a 197-221 over the Cougars. Kevin King earned the medal on the match with a score of 45. Jake Castellano was right behind King with a tally of 46 strokes. Zachary Figuenick turned in a score of 52, and Gavin Filacchione end up with 54 strokes on the match.

Two days later, Valley hosted Morgan and took a 180-215 defeat against the Huskies. King had the Warriors’ lowest score on the day with 50, and Castellano finished with a score of 52. Figuenick tallied a score of 54, and Tyler Ruel turned in a scorecard of 59.

Boys’ Tennis

The Warriors had two matches on last week’s schedule, and Valley came away from those contests with a pair of victories. The two wins improved the Warriors’ record to 10-2 on the season.

On May 12, Valley were in Clinton to face Morgan. The Warriors earned a 6-1 victory over the Huskies. The next day, Valley won a 6-1 road match against Haddam-Killingworth.

Girls’ Tennis

Valley played two matches as part of last week’s action and came away with a pair of victories on the slate. With these wins, the Warriors’ record improved to 5-4 on the season.

On May 12, Valley had a home match against Morgan and claimed a 4-3 win over the Huskies. The next day, the Warriors host Haddam-Killingworth and netted a 6-1 win over the Cougars.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Valley had just one game on the slate last week and ended up losing the contest. The defeat dropped the Warriors’ record to 2-6 on the year.

On May 11, Valley lost an 18-14 road decision against Haddam-Killingworth.
