North Haven Softball Sees Big Week; Baseball Earns Win Victory Versus Law

Softball

The North Haven softball team had a packed schedule that saw the team play five games during last week’s action. Head Coach Karan Castagnola’s squad won four of those ballgames as North Haven improved to 8-5 with one week left in the regular season.

North Haven kicked off its week by hosting Law for a doubleheader on May 10. North Haven swept the set by notching a pair of dramatic victories, earning a 1-0, walk-off win in the opener and then taking second game by the score of 8-7 in eight innings.

Senior Olivia Olson pitched a complete-game five-hitter to get the victory when North Haven defeated Law in the opening contest. North Haven won it by scoring the lone run of the game on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning.

North Haven went on to get an 8-7, eight-inning win over Law in the second game. With the game tied in the top of the eighth, senior Alex Ferriouolo blasted a home run to give North Haven the lead. Olson set down Law in the bottom half of the inning to preserve the 8-7 victory.

Olson started the game on the mound, was replaced by freshman Reece Hebert in the fifth inning, and then came back in to pitch the seventh and the eighth innings to get the win. Olson also had a big day at the dish with three hits, including a home run. Junior Caroline Toni two singles and a double, while freshman Gabby Blanchard hit two doubles.

North Haven went on to get a 3-1 home victory against Mercy on May 12. Olson notched another win with a complete-game performance, allowing just five singles. Ferriouolo had a single and a double to go with a run scored, an RBI, and a stolen base.

Three days later, North Haven played a doubleheader at Hand and came away with a split. Hand scored five runs in the first inning on its way to a 5-0 victory in the opener. North Haven scored three runs in the sixth and another run in the seventh, but was unable to complete the comeback. Blanchard had two hits and also pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Toni also had two hits, while Ferriouolo hit a triple.

North Haven rebounded with a 15-2, five-inning victory in the nightcap. Olson pitched another complete game for North Haven. Ferriouolo had two singles, a double, and a triple, while Blanchard, Toni, and Sydney Maenza added two hits apiece.

Baseball

The North Haven baseball team lost two of its three games last week to move to 7-7 on the season. North Haven took losses to Hand and Cheshire and then came back to defeat Jonathan Law later in the week.

North Haven started its week by hosting Hand at Bailey Road Field on May 10. Hand broke open a scoreless game by plating six runs in the fifth inning and went on to get an 8-3 victory.

Junior Owen Pincince went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for North Haven. Junior Shaun Murray drew two walks to go with a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore Steven Vincent pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

Two days later, North Haven lost to Cheshire by an 11-4 final in a road game. Cheshire struck with three runs in the bottom of the first inning and then added four runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to get the win.

Junior Mike Anquillare went 1-for-4 with a two-RBI double and two runs scored. Murray was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run, while senior Cole Zalegowski also went 2-for-4. Junior Anthony Acampora had a hit with two walks, and sophomore Tyler Harger drew two walks to go with an RBI.

North Haven finished the week by claiming a 5-2 win versus Jonathan Law at DeMayo Ballfield on May 14. Senior JJ Mazzaro earned his fifth victory by pitching a five-hitter with seven strikeouts for North Haven.

North Haven went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning when junior Ryan Balzano singled and scored on a double by Pincince. North Haven made it 2-0 in the third on an RBI double by Anquillare that brought home Balzano.

North Haven scored two runs in the third to take a 4-0 advantage. Harger walked and scored on an RBI double from Murray, who later came home on an RBI single by Balzano.

Law scored two runs in the top of the sixth, but North Haven came back with a run in the bottom half to make it 5-2. Junior Salvatore Giamo drew a pinch-hit walk and later came home on an RBI single by Pincince to give North Haven some insurance.

Pincince went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, and two RBI. Balzano went 2-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base. Anquillare was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Murray went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Boys’ Golf

The North Haven boys’ golf team played three matches last week and came away with one victory to put its record at 3-6 this season.

On May 10, North Haven scored a 217 to earn a road win versus Lyman Hall at Wallingford Country Club. Freshman Kevin Lawlor finished with a score of 50 to lead the North Haven pack. Sophomore Christian Basmadjian and freshman Chris Labanara both scored a 53, while senior Chase DiCarlo scored a 61.

The following day, North Haven took a 160-226 home loss to Amity at Tradition Golf Club. Basmadjian led North Haven with a round of 50 on the afternoon. Freshman Danny LaDore scored a 58, while senior Justin Yeager and DiCarlo both turned in a 59.

North Haven finished its week by taking a 182-229 road loss to Sheehan at Farms Country Club on May 12.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The North Haven girls’ outdoor track team took a loss to Sacred Heart Academy, but then bounced back by getting a win against Branford later in the week. North Haven will begin the postseason by competing at the SCC West Sectional Championship on May 18 (after press time) and then has the SCC Championship on Tuesday, May 25.

On May 10, North Haven took a 99-42 defeat against Sacred Heart Academy in a road meet. Junior Emily Cocco claimed first place in the shot put (29-1) and the discus (71-10) for North Haven. Junior Ada Forbes won the 800, while sophomore Julia Ball finished first in the triple jump (28-9.5). North Haven’s 4x100 relay of junior Grace Finch, freshman Meghan DeRubeis, Forbes, and Ball recorded a time of 54.43 to take first place.

Two days later, North Haven notched an 86-53 victory at Branford. Cocco tossed her way to a first-place performance in the discus (77-0). Freshman Grace Christoforo won the javelin (89-3), and fellow freshman Erika Fronte finished first for the shot put (28-3.75). Junior Ari Collins earned top honors in the 3,200 (15:06).

North Haven’s 4x800 relay of sophomore Anna Kattis, freshman Anna Mortali, junior Caitlyn McFarland, and senior Taya Stanley took first place with a time of 12:37.2. The 4x400 relay of Finch, Mortali, Forbes, and senior Sofia Fappiano finished first at 4:49.1.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The North Haven boys’ outdoor track team traveled to Branford to take on the Hornets on May 13. North Haven lost to Branford by the final score of 80-70 in its final meet of the regular season. North Haven begins the postseason with SCC West Sectional Championship this week and will then participate in the SCC Championship after that.

Boys’ Lacrosse

North Haven boys’ lacrosse moved to 1-9 after taking defeats in its three matchups last week.

North Haven took a 19-2 loss in Cheshire on May 10. Then on May 12, North Haven hosted Guilford and lost the contest by an 11-3 final. The next day, North Haven hosted Notre Dame-West Haven for its Senior Night game and was edged out by the score of 12-11.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The North Haven girls’ lacrosse team took a loss to Mercy in its lone game of the week. North Haven has a record of 0-12 this season.

On May 11, North Haven hosted Mercy and dropped a 16-9 decision. Senior Mariella Biceglia and senior Adrianna Corniello both scored two goals and had an assist for North Haven. Juniors Sophia Dorio and Jenna Pine also scored two goals apiece.

Boys’ Tennis

The North Haven boys’ tennis team took three defeats last week to move to 0-14 on the year.

On May 10, North Haven took a 7-0 home loss against Amity. Two days later, North Haven was on the road to play Guilford and lost the contest by a 6-1 score. North Haven’s No. 3 doubles team of junior Justin Geremia and sophomore Jess Hansard claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the match.

Then on May 14, North Haven hosted Branford and dropped a 6-1 decision versus the Hornets.
