H-K Softball Rallies to Beat Valley During 3-0 Week; Baseball Posts a Pair of Victories

Softball

The Haddam-Killingworth softball team won all three of its contests during the past week to boost its record to 13-1 on the year. The Cougars defeated Valley Regional, Morgan, and East Hampton-Portland in recent action.

On May 10, H-K hosted Valley Regional and claimed a 4-3, eight-inning victory over the Warriors. Juniors Madison LaTouche and Audrey Snyder came up with clutch RBI singles in the bottom of the eighth inning to help the Cougars get the walk-off win.

Two days later, H-K earned a 9-1 road win versus Morgan. The Cougars finished their week by claiming a 9-1 road victory against East Hampton-Portland on May 14. Sophomore Kaleigh Bodak pitched a one-hitter and struck out 14 to lift H-K to the win.

Baseball

The H-K baseball team improved to 12-4 by claiming victory in two of its three games last week.

On May 10, the Cougars played Valley Regional and took a 5-2 defeat. H-K maintained a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Valley plated all five of its runs. Seniors Alden Halfinger and Alec Erskine each had two hits for the Cougars in the loss.

Two days later, H-K bested Morgan by a 10-4 score in a home game. Senior Cavin Burrell and junior Alex Sheehan both had three hits in the victory.

To finish off the week, H-K posted a 6-4 home win over East Hampton on May 14. The Cougars scored all six of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to get the victory. Sophomore Callen Powers senior Luke DiMauro had two hits apiece for H-K.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The H-K boys’ outdoor track team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 103-42 victory against East Hampton on May 11.

Sophomore Zenon Kolcio took first place in the 100 hurdles (17.0) and the 300 hurdles (47.7) for the Cougars. H-K also received victories from senior John Bruder in the shot put (51-1) and discus (111-2), junior Caleb Freeman in the 1,600 (4:52) and 3,200 (10:33), and junior Aidan Law in long jump (18-0) and high jump (5-4). Senior Eamon Sweeney won the javelin (138-3), and senior Max Cozean took first place in the 800 (2:06.5).

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The H-K girls’ outdoor track and field team scored a 79.5-70.5 win versus East Hampton on May 11 and is now 4-0 this spring.

Senior Kedarjah Lewis hit the trifecta by winning the 100 (11.9), the long jump (17-7), the and triple jump (34-10) for H-K. Senior Gabby Lester finished first for the discus (91-7) and the shot put (29-7). Sophomore Isabel Berardino won the 3,200 (13:17), while fellow sophomore Leah Chester earned top honors in the high jump 4-10.

Girls’ Tennis

The H-K girls’ tennis team improved to 7-7 by winning two of three in last week’s action.

On May 10, H-K defeated East Hampton by a 5-2 final. Two days later, the Cougars notched a 4-3 victory versus Coginchaug. H-K’s only loss of the week came against Valley Regional on May 13, when the Cougars took a 6-1 loss to the Warriors.

Boys’ Tennis

The H-K boys’ tennis team moved to 4-10 after winning one of its three matches last week.

H-K took a 6-1 home loss to East Hampton 6-1 on May 10. Two days later, the Cougars won a 6-0 against Coginchaug. H-K finished out the week with a 6-1 loss against Valley Regional on May 13.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The H-K boys’ lacrosse team took its first defeat of the season and lost three of four overall on the week to move to 8-3 this year.

On May 10, H-K lost a home game against East Catholic by the score of 13-7. The next day, the Cougars took a 12-11 road loss to Valley Regional.

Then on May 13, the Cougars picked up a 12-6 home win against North Branford. H-K went on to take a 7-6 road loss to RHAM on May 15.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The H-K girls’ lacrosse team split a pair of contests last week and is now 3-7 on the season.

On May 11, H-K defeated Valley Regional by the final score of 18-14. Two days later, the Cougars took a 21-9 loss to North Branford.

Boys’ Golf

The H-K boys’ golf team lost both of its matches last week to move to 0-8 this season.

On May 11, the Cougars took a 197-221 loss against Valley Regional at Black Hall Golf Club. Junior Andrew Fleig shot a 53 for the Cougars. Freshman Declan Kessler (54), junior Gabe Barile (56), and freshman Bryce O’Linn (58) rounded out H-K’s scoring on the day.

Two days later, the Cougars dropped a 189-216 decision to Hale-Ray at Black Birch Golf Course.
