Deep River Horseshoe League Sees Big-Time Performances in Week 2

Sheryl Serviss, a Division C player for the Pirates, turned the third-highest score of the week with a total of 136 in Deep River Horseshoe League action. Serviss’s score was only the third time a C player earned a score of at least 130 in the last decade.File photo by Kelley Fryer/The Courier

The Deep River Horseshoe League completed Week 2 of its 66th season last week. The sand pits hadn’t completely dried out from the rains of the previous weekend and a further drenching during the week made for some soggy landings.

Every tossed shoe compacted the dirt, causing more odd bounces instead of the sticking or sliding that makes for a smooth game, forcing players to repeatedly turn over the pits between games.

The Marlins’ Mark Goodale was the top scorer for the Division A players with his score of 143 last week. The Marlins made their way into first place in the standings in part due to Goodale’s stellar score in difficult conditions.

Mike Zanelli, Sr., of the Giants trailed just behind Goodale with a score of 142, and the Royals’ John Sciacca came in third among A players with a score of 131.

Leading the Division B players was Andy Perna of the Reds with a score of 111. Ed Turner of the Red Sox was nipping at his heels with a mark of 110. Rounding out the top scorers for the B’s was the Yankees’ Robert Cifaldi with a high tally of 104.

As for the Division C players, the Pirates’ Sheryl Serviss had an outstanding showing with a high score of 136, which would have put her third-best among the A players on the week. Since 2011, only two C players have earned a score of 130.

Karen Perna of the Marlins took second among the C’s with a high score of 88, and the Tigers’ Deb Scully had a top mark of 80. The Marlins defeated the Yankees 4.5-1.5 thanks to Goodale and Karen Perna’s high scores among the A and C players.

Joe Heery’s Rangers earned a 3-3 split with Todd Nuhn’s Mets. The Rangers held on to second place and the Mets maintained their half-game lead in the fourth-place position. Frank Durinick and the Dodgers climbed to second place in a tie with the Rangers after defeating the Giants 4-2.

The Giants are in a five-way tie with the Cardinals, Reds, Tigers, and Pirates for fifth place at 7-5.

The rest of the standings are as follows: Angels (6-6), Braves (6-6), Red Sox (6-6), Royals (5-7), Cubs (4-8), White Sox (4-8), Orioles (3.5-8.5), Yankees (2.5-9.5), and Padres (2-10).

The Deep River Horseshoe League has 18 teams that feature three players of each of the A, B, and C divisions. The league plays every Thursday night on the First Congregational Green in Deep River and welcomes anyone to come watch its contests. For info, visit deepriverhorseshoes.com.
