North Branford Softball Picks Up Three Victories; Four Other Clubs Get Two Wins Apiece

Softball

The North Branford softball squad improved to 6-1 after picking up victories in all three of its matchups last week. Thunderbirds defeated Westbrook via forfeit, claimed a 10-4 win versus Valley Regional, and then earned a 12-7 victory over Haddam-Killingworth in recent action.

After getting awarded a forfeit victory against Westbrook for a game that was slated to be played on May 3, North Branford faced Valley Regional on the road three days later and won the contest by a 10-4 score. Senior Sophia Ouellet had three hits and four RBI, while senior Erica Piercey also had three hits and drove home two runs for North Branford. Junior Bella Hills pitched a complete game for the T-Birds, allowing eight hits and two walks to go with four strikeouts.

The following day, North Branford recorded a 12-7 road victory versus H-K that marked the Cougars’ first loss of the year. North Branford scored seven runs in the sixth inning on its way to getting the win. Senior Jada Miconi had three hits with two runs scored and five RBI, while junior Hanna Senerchia had two hits and scored three runs for North Branford. Hills got the start on the mound and allowed nine hits to go with three walks and 12 strikeouts.

Baseball

The North Branford baseball won two of its three games last week to improve its overall record to 9-4 in the 2021 campaign. The Thunderbirds defeated Westbrook 8-0, lost to Valley Regional 4-3, and then notched a 6-5 win versus Haddam-Killingworth during the past week’s action.

The T-Birds started the week with a home game against Westbrook on May 3. Freshman Caleb Allen pitched a complete-game shutout and allowed just three hits to help North Branford get the 8-0 victory. Junior Ryan Michonski had three hits, while sophomore John Onofrio had two hits in the win.

On May 6, North Branford hosted Valley Regional and took a 4-3 loss to the Warriors.

The next day, the Thunderbirds claimed a 6-5 victory over Haddam- Killingworth in another home game, winning the contest in walk-off fashion on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sophomore Cam Garrett pitched four innings in relief to earn his first varsity victory. Sophomore Ben Stegina and junior Ryan Nuzzo both had two hits for North Branford.

Boys’ Golf

The T-Birds’ boys’ golf team improved to 3-2 on the year after posting wins over Haddam-Killingworth and Valley Regional last week.

North Branford defeated H-K by the final score of 194-224 in a home match at Indian Springs Golf Course on May 3. Freshman Jack O’Brien earned medalist honors by shooting a low total of 40 on the afternoon. Juniors Blake Pearson and Ryan Monde both shot a 51, while junior Jalen Rossicone carded a 52 for the Thunderbirds.

North Branford went on to get a 191-245 home win over Valley Regional on May 4. Senior Dakota Cooper was the match medalist with his score of 43. O’Brien shot a 47, Rossicone turned in a 50, and Monde carded a 51 in the victory.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The North Branford boys’ lacrosse team improved to 5-6 after earning wins against Old Saybrook and Branford-East Haven last week.

The T-Birds defeated Old Saybrook by the final score of 14-8 in a home match on May 6. Two days later, North Branford hosted the Branford-East Haven co-op team and prevailed by a 6-3 final.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The North Branford girls’ lacrosse team played three games last week and came away with two victories to boost its regular-season record to 7-3.

The Thunderbirds began their week by posting 15-9 win at Valley Regional on May 3. Junior Olivia Toto had five goals with five assists, while fellow junior Braeden LeBeau scored four goals to go with seven assists in the victory. Senior Gabrielle Gibilisco scored three goals for the T-Birds, who were bolstered by 13 saves from senior goalie Sofia Votto.

North Branford was back on the road to play Old Saybrook on May 6 took a 13-11 defeat against the Rams. Toto and LeBeau both scored four goals, and Gibilisco netted three goals for the T-Birds. LeBeau handed out four assists in the win. Votto made nine saves in net for North Branford.

The T-Birds finished their week by posting a 15-4 victory versus North Haven in a home game on May 8.

Girls Tennis

The North Branford girls’ tennis team took recent defeats versus Haddam-Killingworth and Cromwell to move to 0-9 on the year.

On May 4, the T-Birds took a 5-2 road loss to Haddam-Killingworth. Three days later, North Branford was back on the face Cromwell and lost the contest by a 7-0 score.
