The North Haven softball team had a busy schedule with five games on its slate last week. North Haven came away with three victories by earning a win over Career, notching two victories against Lauralton Hall, and then losing both ends of a doubleheader to Cheshire. With these results, North Haven’s record stands at 4-4 on the season.
On May 3, North Haven played a road game versus Career and won the contest by the score of 32-0. The next day, North Haven was back on the road to face Lauralton Hall and claimed an 8-3 victory versus the Crusaders.
Senior Olivia Olson picked up the win on the mound by pitching four innings for North Haven. Olson allowed two runs and was supported by some great defense from her teammates in the game. Freshman Reece Hebert closed it out by pitching the last three innings, allowing one run.
Sophomore Maria Lockery was locked in at the plate by going 5-for-5 with three runs scored in the victory. Senior Sydney Maenza had two hits with two RBI, freshman Gabby Blanchard also had two hits, and junior Jamie Swiatek drove home a pair of runs for North Haven.
Then on May 6, North Haven hosted Lauralton Hall and blanked the Crusaders by a 4-0 score. Olson tossed a complete game shutout to lead North Haven to the victory. Senior captain Alex Ferriouolo had three RBI at the dish courtesy of a two-run home run and an RBI single. Maenza hit a solo homer for North Haven in the win.
The next day, North Haven played a doubleheader at Cheshire and lost two contests to the Rams. Cheshire won the first game by a 12-0 score and then claimed a 8-4 victory in the nightcap.
Girls’ Tennis
The North Haven girls’ tennis team improved to 7-3 on the season by winning two of its three matchups last week. North Haven posted 7-0 victories over Mercy and Foran before losing to Hand in recent action.
North Haven started off its week by claiming a 7-0 win versus Mercy at Wesleyan University on May 4. Junior Ally Vollero earned a 6-1, 6-1, victory for North Haven in the No. 1 singles match. Junior Taylor Morris notched a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles; sophomore Risa Tobin posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles; and freshman Chandler Morris prevailed by a 6-1, 6-1 score at No. 4 singles for North Haven.
North Haven also won all three doubles matches against Mercy. North Haven’s No. 1 team of seniors Megan Kell and Nadia Kavgaci earned a 6-2, 6-4 win; the No. 2 duo of seniors Kaitlyn Ha and Sophia DelVecchio netted a 6-1, 6-1 victory; and the No. 3 team of juniors Zeena Mohamed and Noelle Carmody triumphed by a 1-6, 6-1, 10-8 score.
The day after defeating Mercy, North Haven hosted Foran and recorded a 7-0 shutout over the Lions. North Haven received straight-sets victories from Vollero (6-4, 6-1), Taylor Morris (6-1, 6-0), Tobin (6-0, 6-2), and Chandler Morris (6-2, 6-2) on the singles court. In doubles play, North Haven’s teams of Kell and Kavgaci (7-5, 6-2), DelVecchio and Ha (6-0, 6-1), and Carmody and Mohamed (8-0) were also victorious.
Then on May 7, North Haven played a road match against Hand and took a 7-0 loss to the Tigers.
Boys’ Tennis
The North Haven boys’ tennis team took three defeats in last week’s action. North Haven moved to 0-11 on the season after losing contests to Xavier, Notre Dame-West Haven, and Cheshire last week.
North Haven hosted Xavier on May 3 and took a 7-0 loss in the contest. The following day, North Haven lost to Notre Dame-West Haven by a 6-1 score in another home match. Then on May 7, North Haven was on the road to face Cheshire and dropped a 6-1 decision against the Rams.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The North Haven boys’ outdoor track team improved to 5-1 on the year by earning a win against Notre Dame-West Haven last week. On May 4, North Haven hosted Notre Dame and defeated the Green Knights by the final score of 83-67 at Vanacore Field.
Sophomore Matt Crispi took first place in both the 110 hurdles (18.0) and the 300 intermediate hurdles (47.1) for North Haven. Senior Torray Armfield finished first in the long jump (20-10), junior Jack Pollard took first in the 400 (54.0), sophomore Ethan Anderson won the shot put (43-10), and senior Anthony Vigliotto claimed first place in the discus (116-11).
North Haven’s 4x800 relay team of senior Aaron Barbiero, junior Luke Nugent, senior Nick Howlett, and senior Patrick Rourke finished first with a time of 9:01.05. The 4x100 relay of junior MJ DeVilliers, Jr., sophomore Danny Thomas, senior Taray Smart, Jr., and Armfield recorded a time of 46.4 to take first place. North Haven’s 4x400 relay featuring Rourke, DeVilliers, Jr., Howlett, and Pollard took first with a mark of 3:43.3.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The North Haven girls’ outdoor track team hosted Lauralton Hall for a meet on May 7. North Haven took a 90-50 defeat against the Crusaders in the matchup at Vanacore Field.
Sophomore Julia Ball took first place in the long jump (13-10.5) and the triple jump (28-10) for North Haven in the meet. Freshman Erika Fronte finished first in the shot put (32-0.25), while fellow freshman Grayce Christoforo claimed first place for the javelin (83-3). North Haven’s 4x100 relay of junior Grace Finch, freshman Meaghan DeRubeis, junior Brooke Waldron, and Ball finished first by recording a time of 54.6.
Boys’ Golf
The North Haven boys’ golf team lost two of its three matches last week and is now 2-4 on the season. North haven took losses against Branford and East Haven to go with a victory versus Wilbur Cross in recent action.
On May 3, North Haven took a 161-204 defeat against Branford in a home match at Tradition Golf Club. Sophomore Christian Basmadjian and freshman Danny LaDore both finished with a score of 49 for North Haven. Freshman Kevin Lawlor posted a score of 50, while senior Justin Yeager scored a 56 in the match.
The next day, North Haven responded by notching a 207-215 road victory versus Wilbur Cross at Alling Memorial Golf Club. LaDore earned medalist honors at the low scorer of the meet by turning in a 49 for North Haven. Yeager finished with a score of 51, freshman Chris Labanara carded a 53, and senior Chase DiCarlo recorded a score of 54 in the victory.
Then on May 6, lost to East Haven by a 186-214 score in another road match at Alling Memorial Golf Club. Basmadjian (50), LaDore (52), Lawlor (55), and Yeager (57) accounted for North Haven’s scoring on the day.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The North Haven boys’ lacrosse squad played five games during its first week of action since recently returning from a team quarantine. North Haven took losses in all five contests to move to 1-6 in the 2021 season.
North Haven took a 14-7 road loss to Guilford on May 3. The following day, North Haven hosted Cheshire and lost to the Rams by a 20-7 score. The day after that, North Haven was on the road to play Hand and took a 17-1 defeat.
Head Coach Peter Greco’s team hosted Xavier the next day and took a 10-3 loss against the Falcons. Then on May 8, North Haven took a 9-1 in a road game versus Amity.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The North Haven girls’ lacrosse team lost three recent contests to move to 0-11 on the year. North Haven took defeats versus Lauralton Hall, St. Joseph, and North Branford in last week’s games.
On May 4, North Haven played a road game versus Lauralton Hall and lost to the Crusaders by a 13-4 score. Three days later, Head Coach Bernie Pellegrino’s team took a 15-1 loss against St. Joseph in a home game at North Haven Middle School. The following day, North Haven was on the road to play North Branford and dropped a 15-4 decision versus the Thunderbirds.
