North Haven Girls’ Rugby Notches First Wins in Team History

The North Haven girls’ rugby club team earned its first wins in program history by sweeping a three-game series against Darien last week.

On May 6, Head Coach Kristin Cataldo’s club traveled to Darien and won three contests versus the Blue Wave—prevailing by final scores of 22-20, 22-10, and 22-5—to win the overall matchup by the tally of 66-35. Junior Chandler Ceste-Martinez scored 31 points for North Haven on the day.

North Haven earned a 22-20 win versus Darien in the first game of the set. Senior captain Olivia Scoppetto, fellow senior Vincenza Muoio, junior Brooke Nebor, and Ceste-Martinez all crossed the goal line to score one try in the victory with Nebor’s try coming on the opening play of the game. Ceste-Martinez also kicked the 2-point conversion after scoring her try.

Ceste-Martinez scored three tries and added one conversion when North Haven defeated Darien by a 22-10 score in the second contest. Muoio also scored a try for Coach Cataldo’s squad.

North Haven finished off its sweep with a 22-5 victory in the final game of the series. Ceste- Martinez scored a try and booted home a 2-point conversion in the win. Muoio, Scoppetto, and freshman Gina Peretore added one try apiece.

In addition to all the scorers, Coach Cataldo also credited senior captain Nicole Reynolds, senior Kelsey Coppola, junior Skylre Hine, and freshman Lexy Coppola for some excellent carries that set up scoring opportunities for North Haven.

Nebor and Scoppetto were named by North Haven’s Players of the Game by the team. Darien voted for Muoio as the Player of the Game for North Haven.

Prior to facing Darien, North Haven played two home game against Fairfield on May 2. North Haven took a 30-5 defeat in the first game and lost the second contest by a 10-0 score. Ceste-Martinez scored a try for North Haven in the first game.
