Hand Boys’ Lacrosse Notches Four Victories; Three Other Teams Also Sweep the Week

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Hand boys’ lacrosse team had a big week that saw the Tigers win all four of their contests to improve to 8-3 on the year. The Tigers defeated Xavier, North Haven, Shelton, and Simsbury in recent play.

On May 3, Hand traveled to Xavier and prevailed by a 16-1 score. Senior Ben Sisk led the Tigers with three goals, while fellow seniors Tatum Fitzmaurice, Braeden Kosiewicz, and Ryan Collins each scored two goals, as did junior Patch Flanagan. Senior Mike McGuirk, senior Jared Martin, senior Robby Swank, junior Kevin Sandor, and Alex Cushing all scored one goal. Senior goalie Ryan Bordiere made nine saves in net.

Two days later, Hand hosted North Haven and notched a 17-1 victory. Sisk scored five goals for the Tigers, who received three goals from Collins and a pair of scores by Sandor. Fitzmaurice, Kosiewicz, Patch Flanagan, McGuirk, and senior Will Flanagan each scored one goal. Bordiere had eight saves in the game.

The very next day, Hand hosted Shelton and claimed a 12-3 win. Sisk netted three goals for the Tigers in the victory. Kosiewicz, McGuirk, Collins, Swank, Martin each scored one goal, as did senior Darrell Brake, junior Seth Sweitzer, and junior Declan DiProspero. Bordiere made nine saves, and junior Nick Lynch had three saves for Hand.

In its last game of the week, Hand hosted Simsbury and won a 6-4 decision on May 8. Patch Flanagan netted four goals for the Tigers, and Collins scored two goals in the victory. Bordiere stopped 12 shots in net.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Hand girls’ lacrosse team moved to 4-6 after taking two recent defeats.

On May 4, the Tigers hosted Staples and lost the game by a 19-12 final. Four days later, Hand traveled to Glastonbury took a 14-5 defeat.

Boys’ Tennis

The Hand boys’ tennis team raised its record to 11-0 by claiming victory in both of last week’s contests.

On May 6, the Tigers hosted Guilford and earned a 6-1 win. In singles play, senior Josh Israel won a 6-1, 6-0 decision; junior Sebastian Lowy notched a 6-0, 6-0 victory; and junior Max Gulla won his contest by the score of 7-6, 6-1. Hand’s doubles team of senior Reilly Vejar and freshman Elliott Booth won 6-0, 6-0; junior Will Fumex and freshman Matt Vetter posted a 6-0, 6-0 win; and senior John Van Ostenbridge and junior Patrick Hennessey recorded a 6-0, 6-3 victory.

The following day, Hand traveled to Wesleyan University and swept Xavier by a 7-0 score. Israel, Lowy, and Gulla all earned 6-0, 6-0 wins in their singles matches. Senior David Levchenko was victorious by a 6-0, 6-1 score in his matchup. On the doubles court, the Tigers’ team of Vejar and junior Will deChabert won 6-0, 6-1; Fumex and Booth won 6-1, 6-1; and Van Ostenbridge and Hennessey claimed a 6-2, 7-5 victory.

Girls’ Tennis

The Hand girls’ tennis team won all three of its matches last week to improve its record to 10-1 on the year.

On May 3, the Tigers defeated Guilford 5-2 at Polson Middle School. In singles action, senior Lindsay Riordan won a 6-0, 6-2 decision; junior Claire Langille was victorious by a 6-0, 6-0 score; and sophomore Laila Haraj-Sai came out on top by the final tally of 4-6, 6-2, 10-6. The doubles team of senior Paige Van Ostenbridge and junior Bella Vejar won 6-2, 6-1, while the pairing of senior Eliza Beccia and sophomore Libby Rogers earned a 6-1, 6-2 win.

Three days later, Hand traveled to Hamden Middle School and blanked Sacred Heart Academy 7-0.

Then on May 7, Hand hosted North Haven and posted another 7-0 shutout. Riordan won 6-1, 6-0; Langille claimed a 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 victory; Haraj-Sai won her match 6-0, 6-0; and senior Eileen Chen netted a 6-4, 6-1 win.

The doubles team of juniors Breanna Colonese-DiBello and Zhu Zhu Berger posted a 6-3, 6-1 win. Van Ostenbridge and Vejar won their match by the score of 6-1, 6-0, while Beccia and Rogers also earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

Boys’ Golf

The Hand boys’ golf team continued its impressive play by recording three more victories during the past week. The Tigers are now 9-0 on the year.

On May 3, Hand hosted Fairfield Prep claimed a 145-149 victory at Madison Country Club. Senior Matt Doyle and sophomore Reece Scott and were co-medalists for the Tigers with their respective scores of 35. Seniors Will Fitzgerald and Conner Quinn finished with totals of 37 and 38, respectively.

Two days later, the Tigers defeated Cheshire by the final tally of 145-168 at Madison Country Club. Doyle was the medalist with his score of 34. Scott and Quinn both shot a 36, while Fitzgerald turned in a 39.

To finish its week, Hand notched a 144-163 win over Shelton in another home match. Doyle and Scott both shot a 35 to share medalist honors. Quinn shot a 36, and Fitzgerald scored a 38 in the victory.

Girls’ Golf

The Hand girls’ golf squad played three matches last week and came away with one victory to put its record at 2-4.

On May 3, the Tigers hosted Mercy and won the contest by the score of 224-246. Senior Lucia Balzano was the medalist of the matchup with a low score of 48. Junior Lila Sullivan (57), senior Hannah Kidwell (59), and senior Bella Lombardi (60) also contributed to the Tigers’ victory.

Two days later, Hand hosted Cheshire and took a 179-226 defeat. Julia Doughtery had the low score for the Tigers with a 54, followed by Balzano (55), Lombardi (58), and Sullivan (59).

Then on May 6, Hand took a 192-220 loss against Amity in another home match at Madison Country Club.

Baseball

The Hand baseball team took its first loss of the year last week, but also claimed a pair of victories to improve its overall record to 12-1 on the season.

On May 3, the Tigers hosted Notre Dame-West Haven and earned a 4-2 win. Senior Danny Weinstein went 2-for-2 with an RBI single, while senior Eli Davies also contributed an RBI single. Senior Colin Telford had a double and a run scored for Hand.

Three days later, Hand hosted Cheshire and won a 7-6 decision. Cheshire scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 6-4 lead, but the Tigers rallied to win the game when Weinstein hit a two-run, walk-off single in the bottom half of the frame. Weinstein went 2-for-4 in the game. Senior Mike Engelhart pitched six innings and had nine strikeouts for the Tigers.

On May 7, Hand took a 2-0 loss to Shelton for its first defeat of the year, getting no-hit by the Gaels in the contest.

Softball

The Hand softball team won one of its three games last week and now has a record of 3-9 this season.

On May 3, Hand earned a 22-2 road win versus Hillhouse. Sophomore Abby Goodrich had five hits with three RBI in the victory, while senior Grace Hartmann and sophomore Emma Demetrio collected four hits apiece.

Three days later, Hand took a 14-1 loss to Mercy in another road game. Then on May 7, the Tigers took an 18-2 defeat at Amity.

Boys’ Volleyball

The Hand boys’ volleyball team leveled its record at 6-6 after winning two of its last three contests.

On May 3, the Tigers claimed a 3-0 road win over Kolbe Cathedral. Two days later, Hand defeated Pomperaug by the final score of 3-1. Then on May 7, Hand took a 3-2 loss to Amity behind set scores of 27-25, 22-25, 24-26, 25-15, and 15-10.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Hand girls’ outdoor track and field team took a 96-47 loss to Amity on May and is now 0-4 this season.

Junior Meryl Sullivan took first place in the 1,600 (5:36.2) for the Tigers. Sophomore Julia Coric won the 400 (62.6), while sophomore Isabella Portley finished first in the long jump (15-0).
