The Guilford girls’ lacrosse team won two out of its three contests last week to improve its overall record to 9-2 on the year. Guilford earned wins versus Mercy and Stamford and also took a loss to Staples in recent play.
On May 4, the Grizzlies hosted Mercy and won the game by the score of 20-3. Freshman Payton Root led Guilford with five goals, while senior Hannah Tillier had three goals and an assist. Juniors Maddie Epke and Taylor Farace each scored two goals, and sophomore Ella Clarke had two goals with an assist. Senior Sydney Cunningham, senior Emma Appleman, and senior Kathryn Amatruda each scored one goal, as did junior Caroline Kane, sophomore MJ Santa Barbara, and sophomore Kat Baseggio. Junior goalie Sydney Widlitz made four saves for the Grizzlies.
Two days later, Guilford took a 12-10 road loss against Staples. Epke and Root scored three goals apiece, while Tillier had two goals. Widlitz made nine saves in net.
Guilford finished its week by claiming a 20-3 victory versus Stamford on May 8. Epke and Tillier each scored four goals, and Root and Farace both scored three goals. Kane had two goals, while Cunningham, Santa Barbara, and King all scored one. Widlitz made four saves in the win.
Boys’ Tennis
The Guilford boys’ tennis team won two out of its three matches last week to improve to 5-7 on the year.
On May 3, Guilford traveled to Woodbridge to take on Amity. Play was suspended during the middle of match and then resumed on May 8 with Grizzlies edging out the Spartans by a 4-3 score.
In between, Guilford took a 6-1 loss to Hand on May 6 and then netted a 5-2 win over Branford on May 7. Senior Ethan DeAngelo claimed a victory in singles action for the Grizzlies when they faced Hand.
Girls’ Tennis
The Guilford girls’ tennis team stands at 7-4 after splitting a pair of recent matchups.
On May 3, the Grizzlies took a 5-2 road loss to Hand. Freshman Molly Peterson notched a 6-3, 6-2 victory on the singles court, while the doubles duo of senior Kiera Stankewich and freshman Kallie Kagan won their match by a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 score.
Five days later, Guilford hosted Sacred Heart Academy and triumphed by a 6-1 final. In singles play, senior Hannah Dietzko won a 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 decision; sophomore Riley Mullett prevailed 6-1, 6-2; senior Emma Mullett won 6-2, 4-6, 6-4; and freshman Kendall Mulligan earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Kagan and Stankewich earned a 7-5, 6-2 win on the doubles court, while the team of seniors Veronica Zimmer and Claire Pringle won their doubles match by the score of 6-2, 6-1.
Boys’ Golf
The Guilford boys’ golf team moved to 3-5 on the year after splitting a pair of contests last week.
On May 3, the Grizzlies hosted Cheshire and took a 171-173 loss against the Rams at Madison Country Club.
Three days later, Guilford played a home match with Xavier and notched a 173-189 win over the Falcons. Junior Miguel Pearce was the match medalist with his low score of 41 for Guilford. Senior Shane Markle (42), senior Peter Keanna (44), and senior Shea Thibault (46) also turned in solid rounds to help the Grizzlies prevail.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Guilford girls’ outdoor track team improved to 3-1 on the season with a 96-45 home victory against Lyman Hall on May 5. The Grizzlies recorded a slew of first-place finishes on their way to getting the win.
Junior Julia Antony finished first in the 800 (2:35.4) and also won the 1,600 (5:26.4) for the Grizzlies. Senior Zoe McClure took first in both the high jump (4-8) and the triple jump (31-11), while sophomore Kailyn Scott won the 200 (29.1) and the 400 (67.9). Also placing first were senior Maya Rumanoff in the 100 (13.9), freshman Maddie Gasparini in the 300 hurdles (53.8), and sophomore Alexa Suchy in the 3,200 (11:54.4).
Guilford also claimed first place in all three relays. The Grizzlies’ 4x100 relay of sophomore Eliza Hastings, Scott, freshman Tea Davison, and Rumanoff recorded a time of 55.4; the 4x400 of Scott, Davison, Hastings, and Gasparani clocked in with a 4:48.7; and the 4x800 of senior Moira Kellaher, Suchy, sophomore Clara Laughlin, and freshman Faith Ferrie posted a mark of 11:21.8.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Guilford boys’ track and field team hosted Lyman Hall on May 5 and took an 81-67 loss in the matchup. The Grizzlies are now 0-4 on the year.
Junior Ian Rose took first in both the discus (107-17) and the shot put (39-3) for Guilford. Junior Justin Shiffrin placed first in the 800 (2:04.6), senior Reese Puchalski won the 1,600 (4:41.2), senior Tanner Updyke took first for the 3,200 (10:17.4), and freshman Andres Gutierrez finished first in the triple jump (33-9).
The Grizzlies’ 4x400 relay team of senior Caleb Harris, Shiffrin, sophomore Bretton Garrick, and junior Thomas Gregory took first place in the meet, as did the 4x800 relay of freshman Mackinley Cho, freshman Carter Bryan, sophomore Eric Lai, and junior Alexander Sexton.
Baseball
The Guilford baseball team picked up its second win of the year by earning a 6-1 victory versus Cheshire last week. The Grizzlies also took losses against Fairfield Prep and West Haven to put their record at 2-11 on the year.
On May 3, Guilford dropped a 9-5 decision at Fairfield Prep. Seniors Jake Ciocca and Julian Scarpa both had two hits with an RBI for the Grizzlies. Senior Sam Huffman hit a home run and had two RBI.
Three days later, Guilford hosted West Haven and lost the contest by a 9-5 score. Freshman Mike Buccaro went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while senior Jack Palmer had an RBI double. Scarpa was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Guilford finished its week by earning a 6-1 home victory against Cheshire on May 7. Ciocca hit a two-run triple in the sixth inning that proved to be the difference in the win. Senior Mike McCullaugh pitched five innings and allowed only one run on two hits, while striking out five.
Softball
The Guilford softball team lost to Branford in its only game of the week. The Grizzlies are now 4-8 this season.
Guilford took a 4-3 defeat versus Branford on May 3. Senior Jill Batick and freshman Addison Smith each had two hits for the Grizzlies.
