The Valley Regional baseball squad had three games last week and came away with three wins on the slate. The victories improved the Warriors’ record to 7-2 on the year.
On April 26, Valley earned a come-from-behind win over Old Saybrook. Valley was down by a score of 5-0 in the third inning and, in the bottom of the frame, the Warriors battled back with four runs. Jack Finnegan had a big two-RBI hit to help spark the rally. Valley scored a run in the fourth to tie it up 5-5. Valley would go on to score a run in the fifth and sixth innings as well. The Rams scored two runs in the seventh to tie the game. In the bottom of the seventh inning, pinch hitter Sam Helsel lined a single to right to score Jason Malli and earn Valley the exciting victory.
Jack Finnegan got the win for the Warriors in his first ever pitching appearance for the team. The sophomore came into the game in the fourth inning and ultimately allowed just two runs in his win.
Colin Carver went 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Drew Salbinski was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Two days later, Valley picked up a 3-0 home win against Old Lyme. Carver earned the win on the mound, while Henry Breckenfeld got the save on the mound. Sam Hutchinson had an important triple in the win as well. Valley’s defense came up steady, as well.
On April 30, the Warriors claimed their fifth win in a row with a 9-6 home victory over Hale-Ray. Ryan Ellison earned the win on the mound for the Warriors to improve to 3-0 on the season. Valley put up 13 hits in the win, and Kyle Metz, James Marsden, and Braeden Sparaco all tallied two hits and an RBI apiece.
Softball
The Warriors had a very busy week with a slate of four games, and they came away from the quartet with a split. The two victories marked Valley first two of the season, and the Warriors record moved to 2-6 on the season.
On April 26, Valley headed to Old Saybrook and claimed a 12-3 victory over the Rams. Valley got off to the fast start with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, but the Rams tied it up with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Not to be outdone, the Warriors added four runs in the second to make it 6-2. Both teams scored a run in the fifth inning to make it 7-3, and Valley added five runs in the seventh to make it 12-3.
Two days later, Valley lost a 8-4 contest against Old Lyme. The Warriors scored two runs in the first again, and the Wildcats added a run in the bottom of the frame to make it 2-1. Old Lyme put three more runs on the board in the second inning to make it 4-2. Another run in the third by the Wildcats made it 5-2. Valley narrowed Old Lyme’s advantage to a single run in the top of the sixth inning with a pair runs making it 5-4, but the Wildcats added three more in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-4.
On April 30, the Warriors lost a 9-7 contest versus Hale-Ray. By the end of the second inning, the Noises had a 6-1 lead. Valley battled back in the fourth to make it 6-5, but then Hale-Ray added two more runs in the bottom of the frame to make it 8-5. Valley added single runs in the fifth and sixth, but Hale-Ray also added a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-7.
The next day, Valley won a 13-5 home contest versus East Hampton-Portland. The winning pitcher for the Warriors was Anna Benson, who tallied five strikeouts. Abby Amara had a great showing going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Valley pulled ahead early with a four-run first inning, and then added two more runs in the second for a 6-0 lead. East Hampton-Portland battled back with four runs in the top of the fourth, but Valley kept East Hampton-Portland at bay with two more runs in the bottom of the frame to make it 8-4. East Hampton-Portland inched closer with another run in the fifth, but Valley added five runs in the bottom of the same inning and put the game out of reach at 13-5.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Warriors had a pair of games on the slate last week and came away with a split between the two contests. On April 29, the Warriors played North Branford on the road and claimed a 14-7 win over the Thunderbirds.
Two days later, Valley took a 12-3 road loss against a tough Southington team.
Boys’ Golf
The Warriors played two matches last week and lost both of them. With these defeats, Valley’s record fell to 1-3 on the season.
On April 27, the Warriors headed to Lyman Orchards Golf Course to face off with Coginchaug. Valley took a 183-231 loss against the Blue Devils.
Two days later, the Warriors were at the Portland Golf Course to battle the Highlanders. Valley lost the contest by a score of 163-222. Girls’ Tennis
Valley played just two matches last week and ended up with a win and a loss. With these results, the Warriors’ record moved to 6-2 on the season.
On April 26, Valley hosted Portland and took a 4-3 defeat in the match. The Warriors were down a player and had to forfeit No. 3 doubles after shuffling around the lineup.
Two days later, Valley claimed a 6-1 road victory over North Branford.
