H-K’s Track Teams Earn Wins Versus Morgan; Baseball Takes Two of Three

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ outdoor track squad posted a 125-12 victory over Morgan on April 27. The Cougars improved to 2-0 this spring with the win.

H-K turned in several first-place performances in its win versus Morgan. Senior Eamon Sweeney took first place in the 110 hurdles (15.2), the 300 hurdles (42.7), the javelin (143-8), and the high jump (6-0) for the Cougars.

H-K also received victories from senior John Kowal in the 100 (11.6), the 200 (23.8), and the long jump (19-8), along with senior John Bruder in the shot put (50-1) and the discus (117-6). Also claiming first place were senior Matt Jennings in the 400 (51.1), junior Andrew Hedges in the 3,200 (10:36), and junior Caleb Freeman in the 1,600 (4:53).

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The H-K girls’ outdoor track and field team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 124-14 victory against Morgan on April 27.

Senior Kedarjah Lewis finished first in the 100 (12.1), the 200 (26.2), the long jump (18-2), and the triple jump (33-3) for the Cougars. Fellow senior Mai-Ly Criscuolo took first in the 100 hurdles (17.1) and the 300 hurdles (51.5), senior Meara Bodak won the 1,600 (5:53) and the 3,200 (13:16), and senior Gabby Lester earned top honors for the shot put (26-1) and the discus (85-4).

Also placing first for the Cougars were junior Jess Timothy in the high jump (4-8), junior Scarlet Strom in the javelin (74-3), junior Brianna Minervino in the 800 (2:43), and freshman Layla Hayward in the 400 (88.3).

Baseball

The H-K baseball team took its second loss of the season last week, but also claimed a pair of victories to improve to 8-2 on the spring. After losing to Coginchaug, the Cougars bounced back with wins over Westbrook and Portland.

On April 26, H-K hosted Coginchaug and took a 9-2 defeat. Seniors Alec Erskine and Luke DiMauro both had a hit with an RBI for H-K in the game.

Two days later, the Cougars bested Westbrook by a 17-2 score in a home game. Sophomore Callen Powers got the win on the mound for H-K. Senior Alden Halfinger had two hits and four RBI to lead the Cougars’ offense. Senior Matt Miranda also had two hits in the win.

To finish up the week, H-K traveled to Portland and notched a 7-1 victory over the Highlanders. Erskine picked up the win on the hill for H-K. DiMauro, Miranda, and junior Lucas Kamoen each had two hits on the day.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The H-K boys’ lacrosse team won its lone game of the week to improve to 4-0 on the year. On April 27, the Cougars hosted Cromwell and came away with a 18-2 victory against the Panthers.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The H-K girls’ lacrosse squad earned its first win of the season last week. H-K played a road game versus Cromwell on April 27 and triumphed by a 19-9 final to improve to 1-4 this year.

Girls’ Tennis

The H-K girls’ tennis team split a pair of contests last week and is now standing at 4-5 on the season.

The Cougars defeated Cromwell by a 6-1 score on April 28. Two days later, H-K dropped a 6-1 decision in Westbrook.

Boys’ Tennis

The H-K boys’ tennis team took a loss to Cromwell in its only matchup last week. On April 28, H-K faced Cromwell on the road and lost by a 6-1 score to move to 3-5 on the campaign.

Boys’ Golf

The H-K boys’ golf team lost both of its matches last week and is now 0-4 on the year.

H-K took a 190-230 loss against Old Lyme at Black Birch Golf Course on April 26. The low scorer for the Cougars was junior Andrew Fleig, who carded a 48. Junior Gabe Barile (51), senior Nick Pach (59), and freshman Declan Kessler (62) rounded out the scoring for H-K.

Two days later, the Cougars took a 165-207 defeat against Portland in a road match at Portland Golf Course. Despite the loss, H-K’s total of 207 marked the squad’s best score of the season.
