East Haven’s Track Teams Defeat Career; Baseball Squad Goes into Quarantine

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Yellowjackets’ girls’ outdoor track squad hosted Career for its third meet of the season on April 30. East Haven defeated the Panthers by the final score of 99-20 to improve its record to 3-0 on the year.

Senior Kisha Francois won the 100-meter dash (12.4), the 200-meter dash (26.5), and the long jump (14-5.5) for the Easties. Junior Morgan D’Auria won the 300 hurdles (52.9) to go with victories in the pole vault (8-0) and the triple jump (32-8.25).

Sophomore Jessica Urban finished first in the 100 hurdles (17.9) and the high jump (4-8), while junior Juliana Espinoza won the 800 (3:02.1), the 1,600 (6:44.6), and the 3,200 (15:11.1). Sophomore Alice Stettinger took first place in both the discus (80-1) and the shot put (28-9).

Junior Zayuri Castaneda claimed first place in the javelin (69-0) for East Haven. The 4x100 relay team of Urban, Francois, junior Emily Mazzucco, and freshman Olivia Martin finished first with a time of 53.7.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The East Haven boys’ outdoor track and field team defeated Career for its first win of the season last week. On April 30, the Yellowjackets hosted Career and posted a 119-4 victory to improve to 1-2.

Senior Radames Figueroa took first place in the 110-meter high hurdles (17.41), the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (46.61), and the long jump (18-4) to help East Haven get the win. Fellow senior Dave Amatruda won the 100-meter dash (12.04) and the 200-meter-dash (23.69).

Sophomore Dom Salato won the triple jump (34-10), the high jump (4-10), and the javelin (121-4) for the Yellowjackets. Junior Joe Esposito took first in the 1,600 (6.42) and the 3,200, sophomore Caleb Kaiser won the 800 (2.59), junior Justin Hernandez won the shot put (26-3), and sophomore Jason Toth earned top honors for the discus (84-9).

East Haven’s 4x100 relay team of Amatruda, Figueroa, junior Ethar Al-Hawari, and senior Dhruv Patel recorded a time of 48.11 to take first place.

Baseball

After earning a 2-0 win versus Hillhouse-Career, the East Haven baseball squad saw its scheduled April 30 game against Branford get postponed as the team went into quarantine due to potential exposure to COVID-19.

East Haven faced Hillhouse- Career on the road on April 28 and notched a 2-0 victory in the game. Senior Nick Furino threw a three-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts to get the win for the Easties. Fellow senior Trey Garea knocked in a run on an RBI single to help the Yellowjackets improve to 3-4.

East Haven was slated to face Branford for a road game on April 30, but the contest was postponed as a result of the Yellowjackets’ quarantine. East Haven’s subsequent games against Amity, Wilbur Cross, and Hamden have also been postponed. The next game on East Haven’s schedule is a road game versus Notre Dame-West Haven at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12.

Boys’ Tennis

The Yellowjackets’ boys’ tennis team played four matches last week and came away with one win to move to 3-5 on the year. East Haven defeated Career and took losses against Hamden, Jonathan Law, and Sheehan in recent action.

On April 26, the Easties played an away match versus Hamden and lost by a 5-2 score. The team of seniors Matthew Battaglino and Oliver Gonzalez were victorious in the No. 2 doubles match. East Haven won the No. 3 doubles match by default.

The next day, East Haven claimed a 4-3 road victory over Career. Senior Minh Trinh and sophomore Oliver Kabel won the No. 1 doubles match by a 7-5, 6-1 score. The Yellowjackets also picked up forfeit victories at No. 4 singles, No. 2 doubles, and No. 3 doubles on their way to the win.

On April 28, East Haven returned home for a match against Jonathan Law and dropped a 6-1 decision. Senior Mat DiVito notched a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the No. 3 singles matchup.

East Haven finished its week by taking a 5-2 home loss to Sheehan on April 30. DiVito won the No. 3 singles contest by a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 score. East Haven’s No. 3 doubles team of Trinh and senior Justin Donnelly claimed a 6-2, 0-6, 10-8 victory.

Girls’ Tennis

The East Haven girls’ tennis team played a trio of matches last week, earning one victory. The Yellowjackets have a record of 3-6 this spring.

East Haven took a 7-0 home loss to Jonathan Law on April 26. Then on April 28, the Yellowjackets lost to Hamden by a 4-3 score on the road. The Easties bounced back with a 4-3 road victory versus West Haven two days later.

Boys’ Golf

The East Haven boys’ golf team played a pair of matches last week by facing Foran on the road and Branford at home. The Yellowjackets took losses in both contests, putting their record at 5-4 on the season.

On April 26, the Yellowjackets took a 194-202 loss to Foran at Grassy Hill Country Club. Senior Ian Reynolds finished with a score of 49 for East Haven, and junior Ethan Roach was right behind him with a 50. Junior Norah Rome shot a 51, while freshman Mike Savo carded a 52.

Two days later, East Haven hosted Branford and dropped a 169-176 decision at Alling Memorial Golf Club. Reynolds posted a score of 42, Savo shot a 44, and Roach and senior Nick Sorrentino both scored a 45.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Branford-East Haven (Bfd-EH) boys’ lacrosse team lost both of its two games last week and is now 1-5 on the campaign.

On April 26, Bfd-EH hosted Sheehan and took a 9-4 defeat against the Titans. Four days later, the team played a home game versus West Haven and lost by a 9-5 final.
