05/03/2021 12:00 AMThe Deep River Horseshoe League (DRHL) is back to its regularly scheduled programming after opening its 2021 season at the Deep River First Congregational Church Green on April 29.
In 2020, the DRHL wasn’t able to start its season on time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year marks the DRHL’s 66th season, and the league continues its streak as the longest continually running horseshoe league in the state of Connecticut.
The weather barely cooperated, but the DRHL was able to kick off the season with 18 teams and a full 17-week season after having just 16 teams and 10 weeks of play last year.
Reverend Timothy Haut of the Deep River Congregational Church welcomed everyone and was happy to see the DRHL back on the green. During the reverend’s annual blessing, the DRHL observed a moment of silence in remembrance of league players who passed away during the offseason: Cris Christensen, Don Grohs, and Bill Strong.
Following that somber moment, it was time to throw some shoes.
Mark Goodale posted a score of 146 as his Marlins, who also include Karen Perna and Gerry Hines, swept the Padres by a 6-0 score.
The Marlins were able to claim sole possession of first place with the victory.
Other notable performances included the Giants’ Mike Zanelli, Sr., who was the top player for the Division A group with 164 points thanks in part to his 48 ringers.
The Reds’ Andy Perna tallied the highest point total among Division B players with a score of 120 points, while Perna took home the top spot for Division C players with 101 points.
The Marlins’ 6-0 record puts them in first place after last week’s action. They are followed closely by the Rangers and the Giants, who are in a tie for second place with their respective 5-1 records. The Mets are in third place with a record of 4.5-1.5, while the Cardinals, Tigers, Pirates, and Dodgers are in a four-way tie for fourth at 4-2.
The rest of the standings are as follows: Reds (3-3), Braves (3-3), Angels (2-4), Royals (2-4), White Sox (2-4), Red Sox (2-4), Orioles (1..5-4.5), Orioles (1.5-4.5), Cubs (1-5), Yankees (1-5), and Padres (0-6).
