The North Haven baseball team stands with a record of 4-4 on the year after gaining a split of two recent home games. North Haven took a loss to Fairfield Prep, but then bounced back by defeating Foran later in the week.
North Haven lost to Fairfield Prep by a 13-0 score in a home game on April 26. Fairfield Prep took control early by scoring two runs in the first inning, one run in the second, and four runs in the third for a 7-0 lead through three. The Jesuits tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and then scored four more runs in the seventh.
North Haven’s offense was held to five hits in the game. Junior Shaun Murray went 2-for-3, and fellow junior Mike Anquillare was 1-for-2 with a walk. Murray also pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Two days later, North Haven was back at DeMayo Ballfield to face Foran and posted a 3-1 victory over the Lions. Senior JJ Mazzaro tossed a complete game to get the win for North Haven, allowing one earned run on six hits and two walks to go with seven strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
Foran scored a run in the top of the first inning, but North Haven responded with two runs in the bottom half for a 2-1 lead. Junior Ryan Balzano reached on a single and then fellow junior Owen Pincince hit a double to get it started. Anquillare followed with an RBI single that scored Balzano, and then senior Cole Zalegowski singled home Pincince to put North Haven up 2-1.
North Haven added an insurance run in the sixth inning. Sophomore Steven Vincent drew a walk, took third base on a single by junior Anthony Acampora, and then scored on a single by sophomore Tyler Harger to make the score 3-1.
Pincince went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored for Head Coach Bob DeMayo’s squad. Anquillare went 1-for-3 with an RBI, Harger was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI, and Zalegowski went 1-for-2 with a walk, an RBI, and a stolen base.
Softball
The North Haven softball team returned from quarantine to host Shelton for a Saturday afternoon game on May 1. North Haven took a 6-0 loss against the Gaels to put its record at 1-2 on the campaign.
Girls’ Tennis
The North Haven girls’ tennis team stands at 5-3 on the season after gaining a split of last week’s matchups. North Haven earned a 4-3 win versus Cheshire before taking a 7-0 loss to Amity in recent action.
North Haven started off its week by claiming a 4-3 victory versus Cheshire in a road match on April 26, winning all four singles matches on its way to defeating the Rams. Junior Ally Vollero rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory for North Haven in the No. 1 singles match. Junior Taylor Morris claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles; sophomore Risa Tobin was a 6-1, 6-2 victor at No. 3 singles; and freshman Chandler Morris notched a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles to propel North Haven to the victory.
Two days later, North Haven hosted Amity and took a 7-0 loss against the Spartans.
Boys’ Tennis
The North Haven boys’ tennis team took three defeats last week and is now 0-9 on the season. North Haven lost to Shelton, Xavier, and Fairfield Prep in last week’s matchups.
North Haven started off its week by taking a 5-2 home loss to Shelton on April 26. Junior Ben Rudikoff netted a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the No. 1 singles match for North Haven. Head Coach John Higgins’s squad also received a 8-2 victory from senior Ahmed Anwar and junior Justin Geremia in the No. 3 doubles match.
On April 28, North Haven faced Xavier on the road and took a 7-0 loss to the Falcons at Wesleyan University. Two days later, North Haven took a 7-0 defeat against Fairfield Prep in a road match at Fairfield University.
Boys’ Golf
The North Haven boys’ golf team lost two contests last week by dropping decisions against Branford and Foran. North Haven has a record of 1-2 on the year.
North Haven took a 180-230 road loss versus Branford at Pine Orchard Country Club on April 26. Freshman Kevin Lawlor posted North Haven’s lowest score with a 53 for the round. Freshman Danny LaDore scored a 57, freshman Chris Labanara carded a 59, and sophomore Christian Basmadjian finished with a 61 on the day.
On April 28, North Haven lost to Foran by the final of 208-236 in a road match at Grassy Hill Country Club. Lawlor recorded a score of 50 for North Haven in the match, sharing medalist honors with Foran’s Mia Coppola as the low scorers of the meet. Basmadjian scored a 59, Labanara turned in a score of 63, and senior Justin Yeager scored a 64 for Head Coach Kevin St. Pierre’s team.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The North Haven boys’ outdoor track and field team stands at 4-1 after splitting a pair of matchups at Vanacore Field last week. North Haven took a loss to Xavier and then came back to defeat Platt Tech a few days later.
On April 28, North Haven hosted Xavier and lost to the Falcons by a 91-59 score. Senior Patrick Rourke claimed first place in three events by winning the 800 (2:08.1), the 1,600 (4:49.5), and the triple jump (37-5.75) for North Haven.
Senior Anthony Vigliotto finished first in the javelin (127-3.75), sophomore Ethan Anderson took first in the shot put (43-6.75), and junior Matt O’Connell claimed top honors for the pole vault (9-6). Senior Torray Armfield finished first in the long jump (20-2), while fellow senior Cam Cargan took first place in the high jump (5-4).
Two days later, North Haven had a home meet versus Platt Tech and triumphed by the final tally of 142-8. Sophomore Daniel Thomas took first place in the 100 (11.6), the 400 (58.9), and the long jump (17-5.25) for North Haven. Rourke finished first in the 1,600 (5:05.1), the 3,200 (11:11.6), and the triple jump (35-9), while Anderson claimed first place in the shot put (43-1) and the discus (121-5).
North Haven also received victories from Vigliotto in the javelin (127-9), sophomore Matt Crispi in the 300 hurdles (47.8), junior Jack Pollard in the 800 (2:15.5), freshman Jake McCreven in the 110 hurdles (18.6), and junior MJ DeVilliers, Jr., in the 200 (24.5). Cargan and sophomore Derek Ciaburro tied for first in the high jump as both athletes cleared 5-2. In the pole vault, O’Connell and senior Joe O’Connor each cleared 8 feet to finish in a tie for first place. North Haven’s 4x800 relay of junior Daniyal Saleem, senior Jason Tong, senior Tiernan Neville, and freshman Luke Reilly took first place with a time of 9:53.9.
