The Branford boys’ golf team improved to 4-1 by putting two wins in the books last week. The Hornets defeated North Haven at home and then claimed a road victory over East Haven in recent play.
Branford started off its week by earning a 180-230 home win against North Haven at Pine Orchard Country Club on April 26. Justin Acquarulo netted medalist honors for Branford by turning in a low round of 43 on the afternoon. Senior Finn Thompson shot a 46, sophomore Colin Deane recorded a score of 47, and senior Billy Linder shot a 48 to help Branford get the win.
Two days later, Branford was on the road to face East Haven and defeated the Yellowjackets by the final tally of 169-176. Sophomore Keegan LaLonde scored a low total of 39 to take home medalist honors on behalf of the Hornets. Acquarulo shot a 42, Thompson had a score of 44, and Deane also scored a 44 for Branford.
Girls’ Tennis
The Branford girls’ tennis team improved to 6-3 after posting three victories last week.
The Hornets started off their week with a 5-2 home victory versus Hamden on April 26. The following day, Branford netted a 7-0 road win over West Haven at Painter Park. Branford was also awarded a forfeit victory for a match that had been scheduled to be played at Career on April 30.
Boys’ Tennis
The Branford boys’ tennis team lost three matches last week to move to 2-7 on the year. The Hornets took losses against Fairfield Prep, Guilford, and Notre Dame-West Haven in their recent matchups.
Branford took a 6-1 road loss to Fairfield Prep at Fairfield University on April 26. The next day, the Hornets hosted Guilford and lost to the Grizzlies by a 4-3 score.
Junior William Mollow earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory for Branford in the No. 2 singles match versus Guilford. Branford’s No. 2 doubles team of senior Yann Calderwood and freshman Luke Baylis claimed a 5-7, 6-4, 10-8 victory, while the No. 3 team of sophomore Adam Albrecht and freshman Mason Porras prevailed by a 3-6, 6-1, 11-9 score.
Then on April 30, the Hornets took a 5-2 loss to Notre Dame-West Haven in a road match at the University of New Haven. Senior Declan Ross claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 4 singles match for Branford. Albrecht and Porras notched a 6-3, 6-0 victory in the No. 3 doubles match.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Branford-East Haven (Bfd-EH) boys’ lacrosse team lost both of its games last week and is now 1-5 on the campaign.
On April 26, Bfd-EH hosted Sheehan and took a 9-4 defeat against the Titans. Four days later, the team played a home game versus West Haven and lost by a 9-5 final.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The Branford girls’ lacrosse team played four games last week and came away with a split to move to 3-4 on the year. The Hornets defeated North Haven and Old Lyme, while also taking losses against North Branford and Old Lyme in last week’s contests.
In its first game of the week, Branford took a 10-3 loss in North Branford on April 26. Junior Isla Lionetti, sophomore Molly Pombo, and sophomore Ava Ferrie scored the Hornets’ goals in the game.
The following day, Branford played a road game in North Haven and prevailed by the final score of 10-6. The Hornets earned their second-straight win when they posted a 12-0 shutout over Old Lyme in a home game on April 29. Then on May 1, Branford hosted Fairfield Ludlowe and took a 14-3 defeat.
Baseball
The Branford baseball team was on the field for one game last week when the squad played a game at Lyman Hall on April 26. The Hornets lost the contest by an 8-6 score to move to 2-6 this season.
Softball
The Branford softball team took three recent defeats and is now 2-7 on the spring season. The Hornets lost contests against Foran, Wilbur Cross, and Hand in last week’s action.
On April 26, Branford took an 11-2 road loss versus Foran. Two days later, the Hornets hosted Wilbur Cross and lost by a 12-6 score. Then on April 30, Branford was on the road to face Hand and dropped an 8-4 decision to the Tigers.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Branford boys’ outdoor track and field team hosted Wilbur Cross for a meet on April 27. The Hornets took a 77-72 loss against the Governors to move to 0-2 on the season.
Senior Mekhi Barnette earned three first-place finishes for Branford at the meet. Barnette took first place in the long jump (19-6.75), the triple jump (39-10.5), and the high jump (5-10) for the Hornets. Fellow senior Ryan Hanniford won the pole vault by recording a personal-best, state-qualifying height of 10-6.
Branford also received a first-place finish from senior Noah Brown in the 400 (54.5) against Wilbur Cross. Sophomore Avery Atkinson finished first in the javelin (133-3) for Head Coach Bart Wasiolek’s squad.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Branford girls’ outdoor track team dropped a 72-46 decision to Wilbur Cross in a home meet on April 27. The Hornets now have a record of 0-2 this year.
Branford earned a few first-place finishes in its meet versus Wilbur Cross. Freshman Joelle Budz finished first in the 100-meter dash (13.6) and also claimed victory in the 200-meter dash (27.9), qualifying for states in the latter event. Branford’s 4x100 relay team of sophomore Sarah Nwagboli, junior Katie Laska, junior Samantha Burzynski, and Budz claimed first place with a time of 55.4. Budz came from behind in the anchor leg to propel the Hornets to the victory.
Senior Jen Hincapie took first place in the both discus (67-11) and the javelin (71-0) for Branford. She also finished in third place for the shot put (20-7). Freshman Tess Wasiolek finished first in the 800 (2:26.4), while qualifying for states in the event.
Laska finished second in the 400 (66.5) for the Hornets. Sophomore Gianna Piscitelli took second place in the shot put (20-9).
