Yellowjackets’ Softball Improves to 5-1; Girls’ Track Defeats North Haven

Softball

The East Haven softball team played three road games last week and won two of them, improving its record to 5-1 on the season. East Haven defeated Lauralton Hall 14-0, lost to Cheshire 7-0, and then claimed a 22-1 win versus Hamden in recent action.

Junior Emilee Bishop earned the win against Lauralton Hall on April 19, pitching three innings, allowing just two hits, and striking out six. Sophomore Lily Gagnon pitched the last two innings for the Easties, allowing one hit and striking out four.

Senior Tori Heaphy had three hits, including a double, with two RBI, while senior Carly Cordova went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Bishop went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI, and junior Magdalena Barthel added two hits for the Yellowjackets.

On April 20, East Haven took a 7-0 road loss to Cheshire, getting no-hit by the Rams in the game. Heaphy pitched the first four innings for East Haven, and Bishop threw the last two innings.

East Haven bounced back with a 22-1, five-inning victory over Hamden on April 23. Bishop pitched the first three innings and struck out two, after which Gagnon pitched the final three innings and struck out five.

Heaphy went 4-for-4 with three RBI and four runs scored, while senior Brooke Clancy was 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Barthel, Bishop, senior Kayla Rosario, and sophomore Arielle Dupree each had two hits and combined for six RBI with eight runs scored.

Baseball

The East Haven baseball team played three games last week and earned one victory. The Yellowjackets took a 5-4 loss to Notre-Dame West Haven, defeated Wilbur Cross by a 9-5 score, and then dropped a 5-0 contest against Shelton. The Easties have a record of 2-4 this year.

East Haven faced Notre Dame-West Haven at home on April 19 and took a 5-4 defeat to the Green Knights. Head Coach Butch Johnson said that senior Nick Furino pitched well for the Yellowjackets in the game.

On April 22, the Easties took on Wilbur Cross for an away game and claimed a 9-5 victory. Senior Devin Guiliani-Santiago earned the win on the mound, while freshman Peyton Torre got the save. Santiago, Torre, Furino, senior Tom Sabin, and sophomore Ryan Vallie each had two hits for East Haven. Furino, Sabin, and senior Andrew Voira had two RBI apiece.

On April 23, East Haven took a 5-0 road loss to Shelton. Senior Trey Garea hit a double for the Yellowjackets, while sophomore Jack Angelo pitched well in relief.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The East Haven girls’ outdoor track squad hosted North Haven on April 20 and won the contest by the final score of 82-64. The Easties improved to 2-0 on the season with the win.

Junior Morgan D’Auria won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 54.07 seconds, in addition to taking first place in the high jump (4-6), the pole vault (7-6), and the triple jump (34-8) for the Yellowjackets. Sophomore Alice Stettinger won the discus (82-2), the javelin (89-3), and the shot put (29-4).

Senior Kisha Francois finished first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.74 seconds and also took first in the 200-meter dash by clocking in at 26.82. Sophomore Jessica Urban won the 100-meter hurdles at 18.47 and placed second in the 300-meter hurdles with a mark of 56.88.

Freshman Olivia Martin finished second in the 100 with a time of 14.18 and was second in the 200 at 29.79. Junior Emily Mazzucco finished second in the 400 with a time of 1:11.02.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The East Haven boys’ outdoor track team had a home meet against North Haven on April 20. The Yellowjackets took a 105-43 defeat to move to 0-2 on the year.

Senior Radames Figueroa won the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 16.3 seconds and also took first in the 300 intermediate hurdles at 45.2, qualifying for the Class MM State Championship in both events. He also placed second in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet-6 inches.

Senior Dave Amatruda qualified for states in two events, running first-place times of 11.84 in the 100 and 23.4 in the 200. Senior Dhruv Patel won the triple jump with a distance of 36 feet-9 inches. Sophomore Dom Salato placed second in javelin with a throw of 118-6 and took second in the triple jump at 36-1.

Boys’ Tennis

The East Haven boys’ tennis team played three matches last week, going 2-1 to improve its record to 2-2 this season.

The Yellowjackets took a 4-3 loss at Lyman Hall on April 19 before defeating Wilbur Cross 5-2 at home on April 22. The next day, East Haven earned a 6-1 home win over West Haven.

In its matchup against Lyman Hall, East Haven’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Matthew Battaglino and sophomore Victor Unabia won via forfeit. The No. 2 doubles team of seniors Justin Donnelly and Minh Trinh also won by forfeit, as did the No. 3 doubles team of seniors Tyler Kruse and Edmund Fonacier.

Against Wilbur Cross, senior Mat DiVito won the No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-0 for the Easties, while senior Mateusz Wiszniewski won the No. 3 singles match by a 6-0, 6-0 score. Senior Devon Lopez and sophomore Oliver Kabel served as the No. 1 doubles team and won their match 6-0, 6-0. Battaglino and senior Oliver Gonzalez won the No. 2 doubles match 6-0, 6-0, while Trinh and senior Domenic Montouri won the No. 3 doubles matchup 6-0, 6-0.

Girls Tennis

The East Haven girls’ tennis team took three road losses last week and is now 2-4 on the year.

The Yellowjackets faced Branford on April 19, Shelton on April 22, and Sheehan April 23, taking 7-0 defeats in all three contests.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Branford-East Haven (Bfd-EH) boys’ lacrosse team notched its first victory of the year while gaining a split of two games last week. Bfd-EH now has a record of 1-3 on the season.

Bfd-EH took a 9-7 road loss against Lyman Hall on April 19. Then on April 23, the team was back on the road to face West Haven and prevailed by a 10-7 final. Bfd-EH and West Haven were locked in a 5-5 tie at halftime. The Hornets then outscored West Haven 5-2 in the second half to come away with the win.

Seniors Luke Volpe and Jared Yakimoff both scored two goals and had two assists for Bfd-EH in the victory. Senior Matt Cordero and sophomore Sean Bosworth added two goals apiece. Senior Nick Chieffo had a goal with two assists, senior Dylan Pyle scored a goal, and junior Cam Paleski contributed an assist. Junior Aidan Strebel made 20 saves in goal for Head Coach Jim May’s team.
