The Westbrook boys’ tennis team put three more wins in the books last week. The three victories improved the Knights’ record to 7-0.
On April 19, Westbrook scored a 7-0 home win over East Hampton. At the No. 1 singles spot, Jesse McGannon claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win, while Joey Caslin grabbed a 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 position. At the No. 3 spot, Cooper Whitehouse triumphed 6-1, 6-0, and Elliot Koplas earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4. In the No. 5 position, Dan Ruppenicker snagged a 7-5, 6-2 win.
On the doubles side, the No. 1 duo of Mason Malchiodi and Jonah Freund claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win, and Gareth Whitehouse and Ryan Engels earned a 6-0, 6-1 triumph as the No. 2 tandem.
On April 22, the Knights picked up a 7-0 road victory over Coginchaug. The Knights’ singles wins came from McGannon (6-0, 6-0), Caslin (6-0, 6-1), Cooper Whitehouse (6-0, 6-0), Koplas (6-0, 6-0), Ruppenicker (default). In doubles, Malchiodi and Freund won by default, as did Gareth Whitehouse and Ryan Engels.
On April 23, Westbrook claimed a 4-3 road victory over Valley Regional
Westbrook pulled out the win with victories from Caslin (4-6, 6-4, 7-5), Cooper Whitehouse (7-5, 6-1), Koplas (6-3, 6-0), and the duo of Gareth Whitehouse and Engels (6-0, 6-0).
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Westbrook girls’ track team hosted Haddam-Killingworth in the first meet of the season last week on April 23.
Senior captain Elizabeth Gallagher placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.6 seconds, and she also won the 400 with a time of 1:04. Both are Shoreline Championship qualifiers for Gallagher, and her 400 time also earned her a spot at states.
Each of the following performances qualified for Shorelines: Senior captain Brooke Neri placed first in the 800 with a time of 2:40. Senior captain Marguerite Bartlett placed third in the 800 with her time of 2:50. Lauren Horne took first in javelin with a throw of 76 feet-9 inches, and she also had a third-place toss of 70 feet-1 inch in the discus. Bailey Roberts placed second in javelin with a throw of 62 feet-5 inches. Megan Greaves placed second in the triple jump at 27-0.25 and third in the high jump clearing 4-4. Halley Pierson finished third in the 200 with a time of 30, and took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 13-10. Hannah Freund finished second place in the pole vault clearing 6-6. Kayla Prisley finished in second in the 200 with a time of 29.47. Freshman Leticia Pires finished third in the long jump at 13-10.25, third in the javelin with a throw of 61-11, and fourth in the 200 at 30.13.
Also placing at the meet were Mackenzie True, who finished in third place in the 100 hurdles with a time of 21.5, and the girls’ 4x400 quartet of Neri, Bartlett, Freund, and Pires finished in third place with a time 4:50.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Knights’ first home meet against Haddam-Killingworth on April 23.
Westbrook saw senior captain Luca Troop win the 200-meter dash with a state qualifying time of 23.88 seconds. Troop and also earned first in the long jump with a state qualifying jump of 19 feet-6.75 inches.
The following performances qualified for Shorelines: Brett Metcalfe leap of 5-2 in the high jump. Hever Gomez earned third place in the 110 hurdles with time of 19.75 seconds. Brandon Naccarato earned fifth place in the long jump with a leap of 17-9.5 .
Also placing at the meet was, Ben Wallace finished in third place in the javelin with a throw of 106-9. Gomez took third place in the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.88. The boys’ 4x400 quartet of Cole Strzelecki, Greg Araya, Zach Boardman, and Naccarato finished in third place with a time of 4:10.
Baseball
The Knights played three contests last week and took defeats in all three, and Westbrook’s record fell to 0-7.
On April 19, the Knights took a 6-2 road loss against Hale-Ray. The Noises took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning when they scored three runs. Hale-Ray added single runs in the second and fourth innings, as well. Westbrook cut the lead in half with a two-run top of the fifth inning, but the Noises added another run in the bottom of the frame to make it 6-2.
On April 22, the Knights took a 17-2 home loss against Valley Regional.
On April 23, Westbrook headed to Cromwell where they took a road loss against the Panthers. Cromwell got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, and Westbrook narrowed the lead back to a single run in the top of the second. The Panthers’ offense went off in the bottom of the third however, and plated seven runs to make it 9-1. Westbrook put one more run across the plate in the top of the seventh.
Softball
The Westbrook softball squad forfeited two contests last week. The Knights took a loss against Cromwell on April 23 and another against Old Saybrook on April 24. Westbrook has a 0-2 record on the year.
