The Valley Regional baseball team had three games on the schedule last week and came away with wins in each of them. The victories improved the Warriors’ record to 4-2 on the season.
On April 19, the Warriors won a close 5-4 home contest against Cromwell.
Cromwell drew first blood with a run in the top of the first, and the Panthers made it 2-0 in the fourth. Valley scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut Cromwell’s lead in half at 2-1. In the bottom of the fifth, the Warriors pulled ahead with three runs in the frame to make it 4-2. Cromwell tied it up in the top of the sixth. Valley went ahead for good in the bottom of the seventh in a walk off error.
James Marsden started the game on the mound for Valley and only allowed one earned run in five innings giving up just three and striking out seven batters in his outing. Unfortunately, Marsden came away without the decision. Colin Carver earned the win in relief and allowed a pair of runs.
Braeden Sparaco had a pair of hits and an RBI, while Andrew Salbinski was 3-for-4 in the game. Colin Carver went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
On April 22, the Warriors claimed a gigantic 17-2 road win against Westbrook. Ryan Ellison picked up his second win to move to 2-0 on the season.
There were plenty of outstanding offensive performances as Valley tallied 18 hits in the game. Sam Hutchinson went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Carver went 3-for-4 with four RBI. Kyle Metz was a perfect 3-for-3 and drove in two, and Salbinski went 3-for-5 with two RBI.
Two days later the Warriors picked up another lopsided road victory with an 11-0 contest against Portland. Marsden was the winning pitcher allowing no runs, and he moved to 1-1 on the season.
Metz cranked a two-run home run in the first inning, as Valley’s offense exploded for 11 runs all in the first inning.
Softball
The Warriors played a pair of games last week and lost both of them. The defeats dropped Valley record to 0-5 on the season.
On April 19, the Warriors headed to Cromwell where they lost a 7-1 game against the Panthers. Valley struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, but Cromwell took the lead in the bottom of the frame with a pair of run to make it 2-1. The Panthers added two runs in the third, a run in the fourth, and two more in the sixth to get to the 7-1 final.
The next day, Valley took a 16-3 defeat at home against Haddam-Killingworth. The Cougars scored four runs in the top of the first inning, and the Warriors scored one in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-1. H-K scored three more in the top of the second to make it 7-1. After the Warriors added two more to make it 7-3 in the third, H-K scored three runs in the fourth, one in the sixth, and five in the seventh to take the 16-3 victory.
Boys’ Golf
The Warriors played a pair of matches last week and came away with a split of their contests. Valley starts the season off with a 1-1 record so far.
On April 20, the Warriors earned a 216-220 home victory against Old Saybrook at Black Hall Golf Club.
Kevin King earned a medal on the day for his low score of 46, which tied with Garret Brady of Old Saybrook as a co-medalist. Zack Figuenick turned in a scorecard of 48, while Jake Castellano ended up with a 59. Tyler Ruel finished the day with a score of 63.
Three days later, Valley hosted Old Lyme and took a 196-221 home loss against the Wildcats.
King was the Warriors’ low man once again with a score of 49, while Castellano scored a 53. Figuenick tallied a scored of 56, and Gavin Fillacchione ended the match with a score of 66.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Warriors played three games last week and came away with a win and two losses on the slate. With these results, Valley’s record moved to 3-2 on the season.
On April 20, the Warriors dropped a close 10-9 home contest against Old Lyme.
Two days later, Valley claimed a 16-4 victory over road victory over Morgan.
On April 24, the Warriors lost another close one in a 9-8 road defeat to Northwest Catholic.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Valley played a pair of games last week and dropped both contests in hard fought efforts. With the defeats, the Warriors’ record fell to 1-2 on the season.
On April 20, Valley lost a tight 14-13 road game against Old Lyme. As indicated by the narrow final, these teams were evenly matched. The halftime score 7-6 in favor of Old Lyme, and that single tally advantage ended up being the deciding margin at the end of the game.
Emi Bisson scored five goals for the Warriors, while Rowan Pilon and Salmi Miller had three goals apiece. Leah Frantz and Madison Neviaser scored one goal each.
Maizy Libby made five saves in net.
On April 22, the Warriors lost a 13-9 home contest against Morgan.
Boys’ Tennis
Valley played three matches as part of last week’s action and came away with two wins and one loss on the slate. With these results, the Warriors’ record moved to 5-1 on the season.
On April 19, Valley scored a 7-0 home sweep against Haddam-Killingworth.
Three days later, the Warriors headed to Cromwell, where they secured another 7-0 shutout.
On April 23, Valley lost a close 4-3 home match against Westbrook.
The Warriors wins against Westbrook came from No. 1 singles in Nic Wyzkowski with a 6-1, 6-4 match, as well as Jack Whittaker’s 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 effort at No. 5 singles. Valley No. 1 duo of Kaid Matesky and Tucker Burr also grabbed a 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 win.
