North Branford Girls’ Lacrosse, Baseball Triumph Twice on the Week

Girls’ Lacrosse

The North Branford girls’ lacrosse team played two games last week and claimed victory in both contests to improve to 3-2. The Thunderbirds defeated Haddam-Killingworth 16-12 in a road game on April 20 and then claimed a 14-1 home victory versus Old Lyme on April 22.

Senior Gabby Gibilisco and juniors Olivia Toto and Braeden LeBeau all scored four goals for North Branford against H-K. LeBeau handed out five assists, while junior Grace Marra scored two goals. Senior goalie Sofia Votto made 16 saves.

In the matchup with Old Lyme, Toto scored four goals, and Gibilisco had three goals. LeBeau scored two goals and had five assists, while junior Marisa Raffone scored a pair of goals. Votto had 11 saves.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The North Branford boys’ lacrosse team took three defeats last week and is now 2-4 this season. The T-Birds lost contests against Haddam-Killingworth (6-5), Old Lyme (7-6), and Foran (6-1) in recent action.

After losing to H-K on April 20, the Thunderbirds faced Old Lyme on April 22. Senior Matt Pederson scored two goals and had an assist, while senior Tyler Waligroski added two goals for North Branford. Sophomores Ryan Izzo and Jace Kamienski both scored a goal, and senior Ethan Raymond had an assist. Sophomore goalie Dradon Brindisi made 11 saves.

Raymond scored the Thunderbirds’ lone goal in their loss versus Foran on April 24. Brindisi made 12 saves in net.

Baseball

The North Branford baseball team won two of its three games last week to boost its record to 4-2 on the season.

The Thunderbirds defeated Morgan by a 3-1 score at home on April 19 before claiming a 13-6 home victory over Old Saybrook April 23. The next day, the T-Birds took a 10-0 road loss to Cromwell.

In the win against Morgan, senior Jadon Canelli threw a complete game one-hitter to lead North Branford to the victory. Canelli, junior Dom Scalia, and junior Ryan Michonski each had a hit with an RBI.

Facing Old Saybrook, Michonski had a huge day at the plate by going 5-for-5 with six RBI for North Branford. Sophomore Nico DeSisto pitched five innings and also hit a three-run home run for the T-Birds. Scalia added two hits in the victory.

Softball

The North Branford softball team played one road game last week, defeating Morgan by the final score of 16-0 on April 19. The Thunderbirds improved to 3-1 with the win.

The T-Birds used a 10-run fifth inning on their way to defeating Morgan in five innings. Senior Sophia Ouellet and junior Lauren Ackerman both had three hits and three RBI for North Branford. Senior Jada Miconi had three hits, including a home run, with two RBI and two runs scored.

Junior Bella Hills got the start on the mound for the T-Birds, allowing just two hits over five innings and striking out seven.

Boys’ Golf

The Thunderbirds’ boys’ golf team had its first match of the season when it hosted Portland on April 19. North Branford took a 199-168 loss to the Highlanders at Indian Springs Golf Club.

Junior Dakota Cooper scored a 43, while junior Blake Pearson carded a 50 for the T-Birds. Freshman Jack O’Brien scored 51, and junior Jalen Rossicone shot a 55.

Girls’ Tennis

The North Branford girls’ tennis team played one match last week, facing Old Lyme on the road on April 23. The Thunderbirds took a 7-0 loss to move to 0-4 this year.
