North Haven Girls’ Tennis, Boys’ Track Notch Two Victories on the Week


Girls’ Tennis

The North Haven girls’ tennis team improved to 4-2 on the year after winning both of its matchups last week. North Haven claimed a narrow victory versus Guilford before shutting out Sacred Heart Academy in last week’s action.

North Haven started off its week by earning a 4-3 home win over Guilford on April 19. Head Coach Bob Migliorini’s squad won two singles matches and two doubles matches on its way to the victory.

Junior Ally Vollero rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory the No. 1 singles match to help North Haven prevail. Fellow junior Taylor Morris claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles for North Haven.

In doubles action, North Haven’s No. 2 duo of seniors Sophia DelVecchio and Kaitlyn Ha won a three-set battle by the final tally of 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. In the No. 3 doubles match, the team of juniors Zeena Mohamed and Noelle Carmody earned a 6-0, 6-0 win to help North Haven defeat the Grizzlies.

Two days later, North Haven hosted Sacred Heart Academy and won the match by a 7-0 final. Vollero (6-2, 6-1) and Taylor Morris (6-0, 6-1) were victorious at the top two singles spots. Sophomore Risa Tobin posted a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles, while freshman Chandler Morris claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory for North Haven.

North Haven’s No. 1 doubles team of seniors Megan Kell and Nadia Kavgaci earned a 6-2, 7-5 victory. DelVecchio and Ha won another three-set match, this time in tiebreaker, prevailing by the final score of 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). Mohamed and Carmody won a three-setter that was decided with a super-tiebreaker in lieu of a third set, taking the contest 4-6, 6-2, 10-1.

Boys’ Tennis

The North Haven boys’ tennis team moved to 0-6 this season after taking three recent defeats.

North Haven took a 7-0 road loss against Amity on April 19. The following day, Head Coach John Higgins’s team hosted Guilford and lost the contest by a 7-0 score.

Then on April 23, North Haven played a road match versus Branford and took a 6-1 defeat. North Haven’s No. 3 doubles team of junior Jess Hansard and freshman Nathan Oh earned a 7-6, 3-6, 11-9 victory for North Haven in the match.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The North Haven boys’ outdoor track team earned two wins last week to bump its record to 3-0 on the year. North Haven defeated East Haven and Fairfield Prep in last week’s action.

North Haven notched a 110-40 victory road victory over East Haven on April 20, recording a slew of first-place finishes en route to the win. Senior Anthony Vigliotto tossed his way to victories in the discus (115-7) and the javelin (126-3) for North Haven. Sophomore Ethan Anderson won the shot put (43-2.5), sophomore Daniel-Mark Thomas took first in the long jump (17-9.5), senior Cameron Cargan was first in the high jump (5-0), and junior Matthew O’Connell earned top honors in the pole vault (8-6).

Senior Patrick Rourke ran a time of 54.96 to finish first in the 400. Senior Nick Howlett won the 800 (2:19.79), senior Tiernan Neville took first in the 1,600 (5:23.54), and senior Jason Tong finished first for the 3,200 (11:47.26).

North Haven’s 4x100 relay of sophomore Derek Ciaburro, MJ DeVilliers, Jr., senior Luke Franco, and junior Jack Pollard posted a first-place finish (48.68). North Haven’s 4x400 relay of junior Sam Crowley, freshman Nico Boyle, senior Torray Armfield, and sophomore Blake Butler claimed first place (3:57.56), as did the 4x800 relay quartet featuring senior Aaron Barbiero, Tong, Howlett, and Neville (10.19.99).

On April 2, North Haven claimed a 92-58 win versus Fairfield Prep in a home meet. Vigliotto took first place in the javelin (132-2) and the discus (117-1), while Cargan won both the 300 hurdles (47.1) and the high jump (5-4). O’Connell and senior Joe O’Connor finished in a tie for first in the pole vault (7-6), Anderson won the shot put (42-8.5), and Rourke took first in the triple jump (36-10.25).

North Haven’s 4x100 relay of DeVilliers, Jr., Thomas, Armfield, and Franco came in first place (47.1). The 4x800 relay of Barbiero, Howlett, junior Luke Nugent, and Rourke also finished in first (9:33.5).

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The North Haven girls’ outdoor track took an 82-67 home loss to East Haven in its first meet of the season.

North Haven saw a few first-place finishes in its meet against East Haven. Sophomore Payton Orosco took first place in both the 1,600 (6:45.12) and the 3,200 (14:26.74) at the meet. Junior Grace Finch won the 400 (1:09.15), junior Ada Forbes claimed first place in the 800 (2:38.74), and sophomore Julia Ball earned first in the long jump (13-1).

North Haven’s 4x400 relay of Forbes, freshman Rebecca Ford, senior Sofia Fappiano, and Finch finished first with a time of 4:46.75. The 4x800 relay of Orosco, freshman Anna Mortali, senior Taya Stanley, and sophomore Anna Kattis recorded a time of 12:26.79 to take first place.

Softball

The North Haven softball squad was unable to play any games last week after the team went into quarantine due to potential exposure to COVID-19. North Haven’s scheduled April 19 game against Career was canceled, as was its game versus Lauralton Hall that was slated to be played on April 21. The team’s scheduled April 23 game against Cheshire was postponed.

North Haven contests versus Jonathan Law, West Haven, and Mercy that were scheduled to be played this week have also been postponed. The next game on North Haven’s schedule is a home matchup with Shelton on Saturday, May 1 at 4 p.m.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The North Haven boys’ lacrosse team has gone into quarantine due to potential COVID-19 exposure and, as a result, all of its games on last week’s schedule were postponed. North Haven was slated to face Guilford on April 19, Hand on April 22, and Amity on April 24, but all of those games were postponed.

The team’s games against Fairfield Prep, Notre Dame-West Haven, and St. Paul that were scheduled for this week are also postponed. North Haven’s next scheduled contest is at Guilford at 4 p.m. on Monday, May 3.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The North Haven girls’ lacrosse team lost a pair of games last week and is now 0-6 on the season. North Haven took defeats against Mercy and Sacred Heart Academy in recent action.

On April 20, North Haven took a 13-2 road loss to Mercy. Seniors Mariella Biceglia and Adrianna Corniello both scored goals for North Haven in the game. Junior goalie Hannah Sommer made 17 saves in net for Head Coach Bernie Pellegrino’s team.

Then on April 24, North Haven hosted Sacred Heart Academy and dropped a 13-5 decision. Senior Mariella Biceglia scored two goals for North Haven. Senior Adrianna Corniello, junior Riley Minns, and junior Sophia Dorio added one goal apiece.

During the previous week’s action, North Haven dropped a 7-6 decision to Fairfield Warde in a road game on April 17. North Haven was trailing 6-4 in the second half, but scored two goals to tie the game. Fairfield Warde netted the final goal of the contest to come away with the 7-6 victory.

Junior Eliza O’Connor scored two goals for North Haven, which received one goal apiece from Biceglia, Corniello, junior Riley Minns, and junior Jenna Pine. Sommer had 10 saves in the game.
