North Haven Baseball Takes Two of Three in Wild Week

The North Haven baseball team had a dramatic week that featured a wild win against Cheshire, an extra-inning loss to Amity, and a victory versus Jonathan Law. Head Coach Bob DeMayo’s team now has a record of 3-3 on the season.

On April 19, North Haven hosted Cheshire and claimed a 12-11 victory over the Rams, winning the game on walk-off fashion by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. North Haven had a 9-5 lead entering the top of the seventh, but Cheshire scored six runs to take an 11-9 advantage. Undaunted, North Haven rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh and get the 12-11 walk-off win on a base hit by junior Ryan Balzano.

Junior Shaun Murray hit a two-out single that scored fellow junior Owen Pincince with the tying run for North Haven. Balzano followed with a single that brought home senior Cole Zalegowski with the winning run. Zalegowski had drawn a two-out walk that kept the inning alive.

Junior Mike Anquillare went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI for North Haven. Pincince went 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBI, two walks, and two stolen bases; Balzano was 2-for-4 with a run, a walk, and two RBI; and Murray went 2-for-2 with two RBI. Zalegowski went 1-for-3 with one walk, three runs scored, one RBI, and a stolen base; and Tyler Harger was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

Senior JJ Mazzaro took the start on the mound and pitched the first four innings for North Haven. Sophomore Steven Vincent got the win after retiring Cheshire’s last batter of the top of the seventh.

On April 22, North Haven played a road game versus Amity and took a 5-4 defeat in eight innings. North Haven had a 4-3 lead entering the bottom of the fifth, but Amity tied the game with a run in the inning and then won it on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth.

Pincince threw the first two innings of the game. Junior Alex Bauman pitched the final 5.2 innings, allowing two runs.

Anquillare went 2-for-4 with a home run, a run scored, and three RBI. Anquillare’s homer was a two-run shot to left-center field in the fifth inning that gave North Haven a 4-3 lead. Zalegowski went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Murray was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and two runs scored.

North Haven finished its week by earning a 6-4 win versus Jonathan Law in a road game on April 23. Trailing 2-0, North Haven plated five runs in the top of the fifth and then hung on for the win. Zalegowski had a two-run double, Vincent also hit a two-run double, and Balzano added an RBI single to highlight North Haven’s big fifth inning.

Mazzaro picked up the win after pitching the first 6.2 innings for North Haven. Mazzaro allowed four unearned runs and also struck out five batters. Balzano got the save by striking out the last batter of the game when Law had the tying run at the plate.

Zalegowski went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, a run, and two RBI; Vincent was 1-for-3 with a double, a run, and two RBI; and Murray went 2-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. Balzano went 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, and two stolen bases in the victory.
