Hand Boys’ Golf, Tennis Teams Sweep the Week

Boys’ Golf

The Hand boys’ golf team won all three of its matches last week to boost its record to 4-0 this spring. The Tigers defeated Xavier, Morgan, and Shelton in recent action.

The Tigers hosted Xavier on April 19 and came away with a 153-173 victory at Madison Country Club. Senior Matt Doyle was the medalist for Hand with a low score of 36. Senior Conner Quinn (37), senior Will Fitzgerald (40), and sophomore Matt Gagliardi (40) rounded out the scoring.

One day later, Hand earned a 150-172 road win over Morgan at Clinton Country Club. Doyle was once again the medalist with his low total of 31. Gagliardi (38), Fitzgerald (40), and sophomore Reece Scott (41) also competed for the Tigers.

In its last match of the week, Hand posted a 148-164 road victory against Shelton at Brownson Country Club on April 22.

Girls’ Golf

The Hand girls’ golf team took two defeats during the opening week of its season.

On April 19, the Tigers hosted Lauralton Hall and lost by a 206-229 final at Madison Country Club. Then on April 23, Hand dropped a 197-239 decision against Amity in a road match at Race Brook Country Club.

Boys’ Tennis

The Hand boys’ tennis team won all four of its contests last week and now has a record of 7-0 this season.

To start the week, the Tigers defeated Branford 7-0 on April 20. Junior Sebastien Lowy earned a 6-2, 6-1 win in singles action. Senior David Levchenko won 6-2, 6-0; Elliot Booth was a 6-0, 6-0 winner; and junior Max Gulla netted a 6-1, 6-0 victory. For doubles, Hand’s team of senior Reilly Vejar and junior Will deCharbert won 6-1, 6-1; the duo of junior Will Fumex and freshman Matt Vetter prevailed 6-2, 6-0; and the pairing of senior John Van Ostenbridge and junior Patrick Hennessey won 6-1, 6-1 decision.

Two days later, Hand bested Xavier 6-1. Levchenko (6-4, 6-1); Booth (6-0, 6-3); and Gulla (6-0, 6-0) were all victorious in their singles matches. For doubles play, deCharbert and Vejar won 6-0, 6-0; Fumex and Vetter claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory; and Van Ostenbridge and Hennessey also notched a 6-1, 6-0 win.

On April 23, the Tigers swept Shelton 7-0. Lowy and Gulla both won 6-0, 6-0, while Levchenko and Booth each claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory. The doubles teams of Vejar and deCharbert (6-0, 6-1), Fumex and Vetter (6-1, 6-0), and Van Ostenbridge and Hennessey (6-0, 6-0) were also victorious.

The Tigers ended their week with a 5-2 win against Notre Dame-West Haven. Booth earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory; and Van Ostenbridge defeated his opponent by a 6-0, 6-0 score. Hand’s doubles teams of Vejar and deCharbert, Fumex and Vetter, and Hennessey and junior Charlie McIntyre all triumphed by a 6-0, 6-0 score.

Girls’ Tennis

The Hand girls’ tennis team had another successful week by posting wins against Cheshire and Lauralton Hall to improve to 5-0 on the year.

Hand started its week with a 5-2 victory versus Cheshire on April 19. Senior Lindsay Riordan and junior Claire Langille both claimed 6-0, 6-0 victories in singles action, while senior Eileen Chen posted a 6-1, 6-2 win. In doubles play, the Tigers’ team of junior Breanna Colonese-DiBello and ZhuZhu Berger prevailed by a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 score. Hand’s tandem of senior Paige Van Ostenbridge and junior Bella Vejar won a 6-2, 6-2 decision.

Hand went on to defeat Lauralton Hall by a 5-2 score on April 23. In singles play, Riordan won 6-3, 6-0; Langille won 6-1, 6-2; Laila Haraj-Sai netted a 6-2, 6-1 victory; and Chen notched a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) win. The doubles team of Van Ostenbridge and Vejar claimed a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Hand boys’ outdoor track squad went up against Sheehan on April 22. The Tigers defeated the Titans 109-41 to improve to 2-0 on the year.

Hand’s 4x800 relay team of senior Connor Parthasarthy, junior Danny Hilmer, senior Joshua Delahunt, and senior Joseph Genter finished in first place (9:09.07) versus Sheehan. The 4x400 relay of junior Paul Odyniec, senior Dante Zucconi, Parthasarthy, and junior Alexander Hartmann also took first place (3:43.2).

The Tigers also received victories from junior Jacob McGeary in the 200 (23.5) and 110 hurdles (18.1), junior Jack O’Keefe in the 1,600 (4:46.9) and 3,200 (10:14), and senior Bryce Myers in the javelin (120-1) and pole vault (12-6). Also taking first place were senior Joshua Stewart in the 100 (10.7), senior Aidan McCabe in the shot-put (38-8), senior Sander Coscia in the discus (93-8), Paul Burkett in the long jump (18-9), and Rob Patterson in the triple jump (33-11).

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Hand girls’ outdoor track team took a 123-25 loss against Sheehan on April 22 to move to 0-2 on the season.

The Tigers’ 4x800 relay team of senior Anna Steffen, senior Keelin Virgulto, sophomore Adelyn Arroyo, and freshman Tessa Burch finished in first place at the meet (10:56.7). Steffen claimed first in the 3,200 (11:03), while senior Olivia Zdunek earned top honors for the high jump (4-10).

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Hand boys’ lacrosse team played one game last week. The Tigers were on the road on April 24 to face Morgan and prevailed by a 17-2 score to improve to 2-3 this year.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Hand girls’ lacrosse team split a pair of contests last week to move to 3-2 on the year.

On April 20, the Tigers traveled to Branford and defeated the Hornets 17-4. Junior Kacie Wines scored seven goals and tallied three assists in the win.

Three days later, Hand dropped a 17-10 decision to Cheshire. Wines scored seven goals again in this contest.

Boys’ Volleyball

The Hand boys’ volleyball team earned a win and took two losses in recent action. The Tigers are 2-4 this season.

Hand earned a 3-0 victory against Oxford on April 19. The Tigers went on to take 3-0 losses versus Newtown and Joel Barlow on April 21 and April 23, respectively.

Softball

The Hand softball team played three games last week and won one of those contests. The Tigers are now 1-5 this season.

In the Tigers’ first game of the week, they defeated Hillhouse 29-1 on April 19. Senior Grace Hartmann had six hits and three RBI in the win. Junior Lillian Perry had five hits and six RBI, while fellow junior Brooke Salutari had four RBI.

Two days later, Hand took a 12-2 loss to Mercy. On April 23, the Tigers lost to Amity by a 16-2 score. Junior Megan Hart had two hits in the game.
