The Westbrook girls’ tennis team added to their positive momentum with some more wins on the slate last week. Westbrook picked up two victories, but also lost a match to move its record to 3-1 on the campaign.
On April 13, the Knights picked up a 4-3 road victory over Portland. Julia Farnoli picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, and at the No. 4 spot, Jami Sacco picked up a big 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory in the second set tiebreak.
On the doubles’ side, the No. 1 duo of Xan Zanzarelli and Bree Koplas claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win. The Knights clinched the match victory thanks to a default at No. 3 doubles.
On April 14, Westbrook hosted North Branford and claimed a 6-1 win against the Thunderbirds.
Farnoli grabbed another win at the No. 1 singles spot by a 6-1, 6-1 score. At the No. 2 spot, Gianni Salisbury claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win. Sacco earned another No. 4 position victory with a 6-2, 6-0 effort.
As for doubles, Westbrook swept all three matches with No. 1 Zanzarelli and Koplas (6-0, 6-0), No. 2 Olivia Palumbo and Adrianna Straneri (6-1, 6-0), and No. 3 Caroline Dias and Sophia Rutkis (6-2, 6-3).
On April 17, the Knights headed to Old Lyme and took a 7-0 loss against the Wildcats.
Boys’ Tennis
The Knights played three matches last week. The Knights picked up three wins in the matches and their record moved to 4-0 on the season.
On April 13, the Knights hosted Old Lyme and claimed a 5-2 victory over the Wildcats.
The next day, Westbrook headed to Portland to take on the Highlanders. The Knights secured a 7-0 victory in a sweep over Portland.
On April 17, Westbrook hosted the Highlanders for this match and claimed another 7-0 sweep against the Portland.
Baseball
The Westbrook baseball team played a slate of three games last week. The Knights lost all three contests and their record dropped to 0-4 on the season.
On April 12, the Knights hosted Coginchaug and took a 13-1 loss against the Blue Devils. Coginchaug got out to a hot start scoring five runs in the top of the first tinning. Westbrook got on the board in the bottom of the second with a run. The Blue Devils added five more runs in the top of the third inning, another run in the top of the fourth, and two more runs in the top of the fifth inning.
The Knights had three hits in the game. Westbrook scored its lone run thanks to a homer from Dan Zambrano. Charlie Schneider also picked up a stolen base in the loss.
On April 14, Westbrook headed to Portland, and lost a 6-2 contest versus the Highlanders.
Three days later, the Knights hosted Old Lyme and took a narrow 4-3 defeat against the Wildcats. Old Lyme took the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning. The wildcats extended their lead with another two runs in the third to make it 3-0.
Westbrook tied the game with a three-run bottom of the fifth inning, but Old Lyme took the lead back with a run in the top of the sixth making it 4-3.
John Grace, Trevor Hendrixson, and Dan Zambrano all supplied doubles for the Knights. Nick Palumbo, Tyler Prisley, and Charlie Schneider stole bases in the game as well. Zambrano pitched well, but took the loss on the mound.
