Morgan’s Girls’ Lacrosse and Baseball Teams Notch First Victories

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Morgan girls’ lacrosse team opened its 2021 campaign on a tear with a couple of wins., giving the Huskies a 2-0 record to start out the season.

On April 13, Morgan hosted Haddam-Killingworth and grabbed an 11-8 victory over the Cougars.

The Huskies established a sizable 9-4 lead by the end of the first half, and then held off H-K in the second en route to the 11-8 final.

Morgan received four goals from Lindsay Narracci, and Brooke Carlisle scored three goals. Maeve Madura tallied two goals, as did Carley Schmidt. Emma Lindsay, Iris Dunham, and Emily Smith each supplied an assist in the victory.

Marin Stopkoski made 13 saves in the net.

Two days later, the Huskies hosted Old Lyme and secured a 7-5 win against the Wildcats.

The game was hotly contested the whole way, and both teams were tied 4-4 at the end of the first half. The Huskies saw Schmidt score five goals, while Brooke Carlisle supplied one goal and two assists. Madura added a goal, and Caitlin Steahle provided an assist.

Stopkoski made 11 saves for Morgan in the victory.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Morgan boys’ lacrosse team played its first contest of the 2021 campaign last week. Morgan lost its lone contest on the week, and its record fell to 0-1.

On April 13, the Huskies lost a 10-4 road contest against Haddam-Killingworth. Tim Lichak scored three goals, while Ben McDonnell had a goal and an assist in the loss. Seamus Staunton and Nico Cimino also added assists.

Baseball

The Morgan baseball team picked up its first win of the season last week. The Huskies played three games and came away from the week’s slate with a 1-3 record on the season.

On April 12, Morgan headed to Deep River to take on Valley Regional and took a 9-1 loss. On the mound for the Huskies were Garret Garbinski, Sean Green, and Lucas Hoadley.

Two days later, Morgan hosted Cromwell and took a 15-11 loss against the Panthers. Senior Dominic Carpenter tallied five RBI for the Huskies in the loss.

On April 17, Haddam-Killingworth was in town and the Huskies grabbed a 4-3 home victory over the Cougars.

Junior Mike Pelletier pitched eight innings and was relieved by fellow junior Garret Garbinski, who pitched the final frame striking out all three batters he faced. Carpenter added a double.

Softball

The Huskies played had three contests on last week’s slate. Morgan picked up a win and two losses in the games. As a result, Morgan moved its record to 2-2.

On April 12, the Huskies grabbed a lopsided 14-2 home victory over Valley Regional.

Kacey Edwards had a great showing at the plate going 3-for-5 with three runs scored, and Colleen Edwards supplied a 3-for-4 showing with two runs and two RBI. Alex Duval had a hit, a run, and an RBI. Angelina Herbst walked three times and scored three runs. Sydney Robinson went 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs. Alyssa Maikowski supplied a hit and an RBI. Bianca Arias had a pair of walks and an RBI. Kacey Edwards also got the win on the mound and struck out nine batters.

Two days later, Morgan dropped a 4-1 road contest against Cromwell. Only Duval, Kacey Edwards, and Herbst managed to get base hits. Kacey Edwards scored a run in the loss.

On April 17, the Morgan went up against Haddam-Killingworth on the road and took a 15-5 loss against the Cougars.

Morgan got the scoring started with two runs in the top of the first inning, but gave up three runs to H-K in the bottom of the frame. In the second inning, the Cougars scored nine runs to take a 12-2 advantage. Morgan would go on to score a run in third and two runs in fourth inning to make it 12-5. H-K scored three runs in the fifth to extend its lead to the 15-5 final margin.

Colleen Edwards went 2-for-4 and scored a run, while Eva O’Sullivan went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Bianca Arias also went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Sydney Robinson went 2-for4 with an RBI and a run scored. Herbst had a hit, a run, and an RBI, while Kacey Edwards supplied a hit and an RBI.

Girls’ Tennis

The Morgan girls’ tennis team played a slate of three matches last week. The Huskies secured two wins and took a loss in their contests. With these results, Morgan’s record moved to 3-1.

On April 12, the Huskies hosted East Hampton and claimed a 6-1 victory over the Bellringers.

Two days later, Morgan earned a 4-3 home win against Coginchaug.

On April 17, the Huskies played host to Valley Regional and took a 4-3 loss against the Warriors.

Boys’ Tennis

The Huskies opened their spring season last week with a pair of matches. Morgan took losses in both contests and their record fell to 0-2 to begin the year.

On April 12, Morgan hosted East Hampton and took a 7-0 loss in the match.

On April 17, the Huskies headed to Deep River to take on Valley Regional. Morgan lost a 7-0 contest against the Warriors.

Boys’ Golf

Morgan played its first match of the season in last week’s action. The Huskies played a home contest against Portland at the Clinton Country Club and took a loss to the Highlanders. The defeat moved Morgan’s record to 0-1 to start the season.

On April 14, Morgan took a 162-175 loss against Portland.

Jason Cohen was co-medalist with 35 strokes, which was tied for the lowest score of the match. Andrew Nye marked a score of 42, Nicholas Schmidt tallied 48 strokes, and Cole Crowley finished up with a 50.
