Hand Baseball Sees Big Week on the Field; Tennis Teams, Girls’ Lacrosse Earn Multiple Wins


Baseball

The Hand baseball team continued its strong start to the 2021 season by claiming three recent victories to put its record at 4-0 on the year. The Tigers earned wins over West Haven (5-1), Notre Dame-West Haven (5-3), and North Haven (8-4) in last week’s games.

On April 12, the Tigers defeated West Haven by a 5-1 score in a road game. Junior David Antonetti pitched six scoreless innings and allowed just three hits for Hand in the win. Seniors Eli Davies and Danny Weinstein each had two hits with an RBI, while senior Jack Pireaux got a hit and scored two runs.

Two days later, Hand earned a 5-3 win against Notre Dame-West Haven in an away game. Senior Mike Engelhart notched his second win of the season by tossing four scoreless innings for the Tigers. Senior Matt Carone pitched the last three innings. Davies had a big day at the plate by going 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored.

The Tigers finished off their week by posting an 8-4 home victory versus North Haven on April 17. Junior Ryan Knight earned his first varsity win after striking out six in four innings pitched. Senior Colin Telford went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs, and two RBI in the victory.

Girls’ Tennis

The Hand girls’ tennis squad won all three of last week’s matches to improve to 4-0 on the year.

Hand started off its week by earning a 4-3 road victory against Guilford on April 13. Senior Lindsay Riordan earned a 6-0, 6-1 win in the No. 1 singles match for Hand. Junior Claire Langille posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles.

In doubles action, the Tigers’ No. 2 duo of senior Paige Van Ostenbridge and junior Bella Vejar claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win. The No. 3 team of senior Eliza Beccia and Libby Rogers prevailed by a 6-4, 6-0 score.

The following day, Hand recorded a home victory against Sacred Heart Academy. Riordan earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, and Langille claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles for the Tigers. Senior Eileen Chen notched a 2-6, 6-3, 10-4 victory at No. 3 singles, while junior Callan Mascia won a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 4 singles.

In doubles action, Hand’s No. 1 team of ZhuZhu Berger and junior Brenna Colonese-DiBello netted a 6-1, 6-0 victory; the No. 2 team of Van Ostenbridge and Vejar won by a 6-2, 6-1 score; and the No. 3 team of Beccia and Rogers claimed a 6-2, 6-0 victory.

Hand finished off its week with a 6-1 road win versus North Haven on April 16. Riordan (6-2, 6-3), Langille (6-1, 6-1), and Chen (6-4, 6-4) were all victorious in their singles matches. Hand’s doubles team of Berger and Colonese-DiBello won a 6-1, 6-1 decision. The tandem of Van Ostenbridge and Vejar earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory, as did the team of Beccia and Rogers.

Boys’ Tennis

The Hand boys’ tennis team collected two victories last week to improve to 3-0 this spring.

On April 13, the Tigers netted a 6-1 home win over Fairfield Prep. Junior Sebastien Lowy claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory for Hand in the No. 1 singles match. Senior David Levchenko notched a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles; Elliott Booth earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles; and junior Max Gulla posted a 4-6, 6-2, 12-10 victory at No. 4 singles.

On the doubles court, Hand’s No. 1 team of senior Reilly Vejar and junior Will deChabert earned a 6-0, 6-0 win, as did the No. 2 tandem of junior Patrick Hennessey and Matthew Veter.

The very next day, Hand claimed a 7-0 shutout over Guilford on the road. Lowy prevailed by a 6-1, 6-1 score in the No. 1 singles match. The Tigers’ top doubles duo of Vejar and deChabert was a 6-0, 6-0 winner.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Hand girls’ lacrosse team earned its first two wins of the season by defeating both Mercy and North Haven in convincing fashion last week. The Tigers are 2-1 on the year.

Hand started off its slate by claiming a 19-8 road victory against Mercy on April 13. Junior Kacie Wines scored six goals and had two assists in the win. Fellow junior Karleigh Kokoruda had five goals with three assists for the Tigers.

Sophomore Lydia Doraz had three goals and an assist in the victory. Sophomore Shawn Staak scored two goals, while senior Hadley Houghton, junior Reilly Dolan, and junior Riley Kilbourn added one goal apiece. Senior goalie Ashlee Wargo made three saves in net.

The Tigers wrapped up their week by posting a 17-2 home win over North Haven at the Surf Club on April 16.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Hand boys’ lacrosse squad took three defeats last week and is now 1-3 on the year.

On April 12, the Tigers took a 13-4 defeat versus Cheshire in a road game. Three days later, hand hosted Fairfield Prep and lost by a 10-3 score at the Surf Club. Then on April 17, the Tigers dropped a 10-8 decision to Wilton in a road game.

Boys’ Golf

The Hand boys’ golf squad kicked off its season by notching a 150-166 road victory against Fairfield Prep at Brooklawn Country Club on April 13.

Senior Matt Doyle earned medalist honors as the low scorer of the meet by shooting a one-under-par 35 for the Tigers. Sophomore Reece Scott carded a 36, senior Connor Quinn finished with a 37, sophomore Matt Gagliardi scored a 42 to help Hand get the win.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Hand boys’ outdoor track team opened the 2021 season by hosting Hillhouse for a meet on April 12. The Tigers claimed a 119-26 victory over Hillhouse to start the campaign on a positive note.

Junior Jack O’Keefe earned first place in the 1,600 (4:44) and the 3,200 (10:13) for the Tigers. Senior Josh Stewart won the 100 (11.1) and the 200 (22.6) in the victory. Junior Jacob McGeary claimed first place in the 110 hurdles (18.6) and the 300 hurdles (44.9), while Matt Kasper won the long jump (15-6) and the triple jump (31-10.5). Senior Daniel Ginsburg took first place in the pole vault (10-0), senior Carson Hines won the 400 (51.9), and sophomore Nick Montano placed first in the 800 (2:14)

Hand was also bolstered by victories from its 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800 relay teams at the meet.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Hand girls’ outdoor track team took a 53-33 home loss to Hillhouse in its first meet of the season on April 12.

Sophomore Julia Coric took first place in the 100 (13.2) and the 200 (27.3) for the Tigers. Junior Meryl Sullivan won the 800 (2:32.7), while senior Keelin Virgulto earned top honors in the 1,600 (6:03.6).

Boys’ Volleyball

The Hand boys’ volleyball opened its season with a 3-0 victory against Xavier before taking losses to Shelton and Amity last week. The Tigers are 1-2 to start the year.

Hand claimed a 3-0 home win versus Xavier in its season opener on April 12. Senior Adam Laffargue recorded 10 assists for the Tigers in the 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 win.

Two days later, Hand dropped a 3-0 decision to Shelton in a road match. Laffargue had 16 assists for the Tigers, while fellow senior Alex Elster posted nine kills.

Hand finished its week by taking a 3-1 home loss to Amity on April 16. Laffargue tallied 14 assists in the match.
