Guilford Girls’ Lacrosse Notches Three Convincing Wins; Girls’ Track Takes Season Opener


Girls’ Lacrosse

The Guilford girls’ lacrosse team raised its record to 4-0 after earning three convincing wins last week. The Grizzlies defeated North Haven, Trumbull, and Branford by double digits in recent action.

Guilford started off its week by notching a 19-1 victory at North Haven on April 13. Senior Sydney Cunningham scored three goals for the Grizzlies in the win. Senior Izzy Gurnham, junior Maddie Epke, junior Taylor Farace, junior Caroline Kane, and freshman Payton Root scored two goals apiece.

On April 15, Guilford claimed a 17-5 home win versus Trumbull. The following day, the Grizzlies hosted Branford and prevailed by a 15-2 score.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Guilford boys’ lacrosse team played games against Xavier and Fairfield Ludlowe last week. The Grizzlies lost both contests to move to 0-3 on the season.

Guilford hosted Xavier for a matchup on April 15 and dropped a 9-6 decision to the Falcons. On April 17, the Grizzlies were on the road to face Fairfield Ludlowe and lost by the contest by a 12-7 score.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Guilford girls’ outdoor track team started off its 2021 season by hosting Foran for a meet last week. The Grizzlies claimed a 102-41 victory versus the Lions on April 14.

Freshman Maddie Gasparini had a big meet by taking first place in the 200 (29.8), the 300 hurdles (55.9), and the long jump (14-6.5) for Guilford. Junior Julia Antony also notched three victories by winning the 800 (2:24.4), the 1,600 (5:34.2), and the 3,200 (12:27.2).

Senior Sarah Jennings won the 100 hurdles (20.8), sophomore Ella Esposito took first in the high jump (4-10), while sophomore Nora Amer finished first for both the shot put (20-5) and the discus (63-9).

Guilford’s 4x400 relay of Gasparini, junior Rachel Ellison, senior Moira Kellaher, and senior Sadie Davidson finished first with a time of 5:06.8. The 4x800 relay of sophomore Ursula Adams, Kellaher, sophomore Clara Laughlin, and freshman Michaela Hogan earned top honors by recording a mark of 10:52.7.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Guilford boys’ outdoor track team took a 96-47 home loss against Foran in first meet of the season on April 14.

Guilford’s 4x400 relay of junior Thomas Gregory, senior Caleb Harris, sophomore Bretton Garrick, and senior Reese Puchalski claimed first place with a time of 3:49.3 at the meet. The Grizzlies’ 4x800 relay of junior Justin Shiffrin, Harris, Garrick, and Puchalski recorded a time of 9:11.2 to finish in first place.

Harris also won the 800 by running a time of 2:12.8 for Guilford. Gregory won the 400 (55.0), while sophomore Mike Masotti took first place in the 3,200 (10:26.8).

Girls’ Tennis

The Guilford girls’ tennis team stands at 2-1 on the season after splitting a pair of recent matchups. Guilford took a 4-3 loss to Hand before bouncing back with a 7-0 win over Sacred Heart Academy last week.

On April 13, Guilford hosted Hand and was edged out by a 4-3 score. Senior Keira Stankewich claimed a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the No. 3 singles match for the Grizzlies. Senior Emma Mullett posted a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 4 singles contest. Guilford’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Veronica Zimmer and freshman Kallie Kagan prevailed by a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) score.

Four days later, Guilford earned a 7-0 road win over Sacred Heart Academy at Hamden Middle School. Senior Hannah Dietzko netted a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles for Guilford. Senior Riley Mullett earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles; Stankewich was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 3 singles; and Emma Mullett prevailed 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

Zimmer and Kagan claimed a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the No. 1 doubles match. The Grizzlies’ No. 2 doubles duo of senior Claire Pringle and freshman Kendall Mulligan notched a 6-3, 6-3 win. Guilford’s No. 3 team of freshmen Gabby Kellner and Molly Peterson earned a 6-0, 6-4 victory.

Boys’ Tennis

The Guilford boys’ tennis team took two home losses last week and is now 0-3 on the year.

Guilford hosted Amity on April 12 and lost to the Spartans by a 6-1 final. Senior Walker Mulligan posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory in the No. 1 singles match for the Grizzlies.

Two days later, Guilford hosted Hand and took a 7-0 defeat against the Tigers.

Softball

The Guilford softball team took three defeats last week and is now 0-4 on the young season.

On April 12, the Grizzlies played a road game against Mercy and lost by a 7-1 score.

Then on April 16, Guilford dropped a 6-3 decision against Jonathan Law in a road game. Freshman Addison Smith went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple for the Grizzles.

The next day, Guilford lost to Lyman Hall by a 9-5 score in a home game. Smith went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Junior Allie Petonito scored three runs in the defeat.
