East Haven Softball Posts a Pair of Wins; Boys’ Golf, Girls’ Track Start Off Strong

Softball

The East Haven softball team played two games last week and came away with two wins to improve to 3-0 in the 2021 season. The Yellowjackets claimed an extra-inning victory over Mercy before earning a win against Sacred Heart Academy later in the week.

East Haven started off its week by earning a 9-7, 10-inning win at Mercy on April 14. The Easties were down by a run heading into the top of the seventh inning, but scored a run to tie the game and send it to extras knotted a 4-4.

After the teams traded runs in the ninth inning, East Haven scored four runs in the top of the 10th to take a 9-5 advantage. Mercy scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th, but the Yellowjackets were able to hang on for the 9-7 victory.

Senior Brooke Clancy and sophomore Autumn Clancy both hit home runs for the Easties in the win. Senior Tori Heaphy got the start on the mound and struck out 11 batters for the Yellowjackets.

Then on April 18, East Haven played a game at Sacred Heart Academy and won a 3-0 decision. Heaphy tossed a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts to lead the Easties to the victory.

Boys’ Golf

The East Haven boys’ golf team started up its season by earning three victories on the links at Alling Memorial Golf Club last week. The Yellowjackets posted wins over Wilbur Cross, Hillhouse, and Career during the first week of their season.

East Haven claimed a 179-226 victory against Wilbur Cross in its season opener on April 12. Senior Ian Reynolds earned medalist honors by shooting a low score of 40 for East Haven. Junior Ethan Roach shot a 42, senior Nick Sorrentino finished with a score of 48, and freshman Mike Savo shot a 49 for the Yellowjackets.

The next day, East Haven competed against Hillhouse and won the match by a 178-286 final. Reynolds scored a 38 to once again collect medalist honors for the Easties. Savo finished with a 45, Roach scored a 48, and Sorrentino shot a 48 to help the Yellowjackets prevail.

East Haven wrapped up its week by claiming a 175-249 win versus Career on April 14. Reynolds earned medalist honors for the third time on the week by posting a low total of 37. Roach (44), Sorrentino (46), and Savo (48) rounded out the scoring for the Easties.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The East Haven girls’ outdoor track team notched a victory versus West Haven in its first meet of the 2021 season. On April 14, the Yellowjackets posted a 93-48 road win over West Haven to start their year on a positive note.

Senior Kisha Francois claimed first place in four events for the Easties in the victory. Francois won the 100, the 200, the 400, and the long jump to help the Yellowjackets defeat West Haven.

Junior Morgan D’Auria finished first for both the pole vault (6-0) and the triple jump (33-6.5). Sophomore Jessica Urban took first place in the 100 hurdles (17.96) and the high jump (4-6). Junior Juliana Espinoza won the 1,600 (6:43.68) and the 3,200 (14:49.94) for the Yellowjackets. Sophomore Alice Stettinger earned top honors for both the shot put (27-10) and the discus (72-6). Junior Zayuri Castaneda finished first in the javelin (81-4) for East Haven.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The East Haven boys’ outdoor track team began its campaign by facing West Haven in a road meet last week. The Yellowjackets took a 72-63 defeat against West Haven in their season opener on April 14.

Senior Radames Figueroa took first place in the 110 hurdles (18.1) and the long jump (16-10) for East Haven in the meet. Senior David Amatruda took first place in the 100 (12.4) and the 300 (24.5) for the Yellowjackets.

Sophomore Dom Salato claimed first place in the high jump (4-8) and the javelin (116-5). Senior Dhruv Patel finished first in the triple jump (36-9.5), while junior Justin Hernandez took first in the discus (59-6).

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Branford-East Haven (Bfd-EH) boys’ lacrosse team hit the field to play one game last week. On April 17, the squad was on the road to square off against Foran for a Saturday afternoon showdown. Bfd-EH took a 6-5 versus the Lions to put its record at 0-2 in the 2021 season.

Bfd-EH and Foran were locked in a 4-4 tie entering their fourth quarter of their matchup. The Lions outscored Bfd-EH by a 2-1 margin in the final frame to come away with the one-goal win.

Senior Nick Chieffo scored two goals for Bfd-EH in the contest. Senior Markus Indeck, senior Dylan Pyle, and junior Cam Paleski each scored one goal. Senior Luke Volpe, senior Matt Cordero, and Sean Bosworth contributed one assist apiece. Junior goalie Aidan Strebel made 14 saves for Head Coach Jim May’s squad.

Boys’ Tennis

The East Haven boys’ tennis team opened up its season by playing a road match against Sheehan last week. On April 12, the Yellowjackets traveled to Wallingford to face the Titans and took a 7-0 loss in the contest.

Girls’ Tennis

The East Haven girls’ tennis team hosted Lyman Hall for its lone match last week. The Yellowjackets took a 7-0 home loss to Lyman Hall on April 14 and are now 1-1 on the year.
