Westbrook Tennis Teams Begin Season with Victories; Baseball Drops First Game


Boys’ Tennis

The Westbrook boys’ tennis team opened the 2021 season on the road with a match against Cromwell. Westbrook earned a decisive victory over the Panthers and commenced the year with a 1-0 record.

The Knights earned a sweep against Cromwell with a 7-0 mark in the match.

When these teams last played two years ago, Cromwell was 18-2 and Westbrook was 16-4 to finish the regular season.

On the singles side, senior captain Jesse McGannon earned a 6-3, 6-0 win in the No. 1 spot, while Joey Caslin claimed a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2. At the No. 3 position, Cooper Whitehouse claimed a 7-5, 6-4 win, and at No. 4, Elliot Koplas triumphed 6-0, 6-1. Dan Ruppenicker earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 5 position. Koplas and Ruppenicker both earned their first varsity singles-match victories.

As for doubles, the No. 1 tandem of Mason Malchiodi and Jonah Freund claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win, and at No. 2, Gareth Whitehouse and Ryan Engels triumphed by a score of 6-1, 6-1.

Girls’ Tennis

The Knights took the court last week for the first time since 2019. The Knights claimed a victory over Cromwell, and began the season with a 1-0 record.

On April 10, the Knights claimed a 6-1 home victory in a match against the Panthers.

In singles play, Julia Farnoli claimed the 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 position, while Gianni Salisbury earned a two-set victory by scores of 7-5 and 7-5. At the No. 4 spot, Jami Sacco earned a 6-1, 6-3 win in two sets, as well.

On the doubles court, the No. 1 duo of Xan Zanzarelli and Bree Koplas grabbed a 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4 win. The No. 2 tandem of Adriana Straneri and Olivia Polumbo triumphed by a score of 6-3, 6-2, and in the No. 3 spot, Caroline Dias and Tatiana Ortega earned a 7-5, 6-1 victory to round out the win.

Baseball

The Westbrook baseball team played its first game of the season last week. The Knights hosted Old Saybrook and lost to the Rams. Westbrook’s record moves to 0-1 to start the season.

On April 10, the Knights dropped their home opener versus Old Saybrook by a score of 13-1. The Rams were the first to get on the board by scoring two runs in the top of the second inning, and they added another run in the third. Westbrook closed the gap slightly with a run in the bottom of the third, but Old Saybrook plated four more runs in the fourth to make it 7-1. The Knights wouldn’t score again, and the Rams added two more runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh inning.

Junior Dan Zambrano hit a double and drove in a run for the Knights. Junior pitcher Trevor Hendrixson took the loss on the mound.
