Hornets Drop a Few Contests During First Week of Spring Season


Baseball

The Branford baseball team started off the 2021 spring season by hosting Amity for a game on April 10. Head Coach Stephen Malafronte’s team took a 12-1 loss against the Spartans at Branford High School.

Senior Justin Elpi hit an RBI double to account for Branford’s lone run of the game. Elpi doubled home junior David Loomis, who had also reached base on a double.

Softball

The Branford softball team hosted East Haven for its season opener last week. The Hornets dropped a 14-1 decision versus the Yellowjackets on April 10. Branford enters it second season and third year overall with Tori Ramada as the program’s head coach.

Boys’ Tennis

The Branford boys’ tennis team hosted Notre Dame-West Haven for its first match with new Head Coach Paul Gagliardi last week. The Hornets were edged out by a 4-3 score by the Green Knights at Branford High School.

Junior Matthew Gaudioso earned a 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 victory in the No. 2 singles match for the Hornets. Freshman Luke Baylis claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win in the No. 3 singles duel. Branford also received a victory from sophomore Adam Albrecht in the No. 4 singles matchup. Albrecht defeated his opponent by the final tally of 6-2, 6-0.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Branford-East Haven co-op boys’ lacrosse team squared off against Stamford in its first matchup of the 2021 campaign last week. On April 10, the Hornets hosted Stamford and took an 11-6 loss in the contest.

This spring marks the first year that Branford-East Haven is competing as a co-op team. The co-op was formed last year, but the team never had a chance to compete. Jim May is the head coach of the Hornets.
