Guilford Girls’ Lacrosse Wins Big in Season Opener; Girls’ Tennis Posts a Shutout


Girls’ Lacrosse

The Guilford girls’ lacrosse team kicked off its season by earning a convincing win last week. On April 10, Grizzlies hit the road to face Glastonbury for their season opener and took the contest by a 14-6 score.

Freshman Payton Root had five goals with two assists for Guilford in the victory. Junior Maddie Epke netted four goals to go with a pair of assists and also won 16 of her 18 draw controls. Junior goalie Sydney Widlitz made eight saves to help Head Coach Wendy Epke’s team get the win.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Guilford boys’ lacrosse squad was on the road to play Fairfield Prep for its first game of the year. The Grizzlies took a 13-1 defeat against the Jesuits on April 10.

Baseball

The Guilford baseball team played its first contest of the 2021 campaign and its first game with new Head Coach Nick Merullo last week. On April 10, the Grizzlies played a road game versus North Haven and lost by an 8-3 score in their season opener.

Senior Jack Palmer went 2-for-3 with a home run for Guilford in the game. Senior pitcher Michael McCullaugh struck out three batters while pitching 3.2 innings for Coach Merullo’s club.

Girls’ Tennis

The Guilford girls’ tennis team opened its season on the road with a match against Foran on April 10. The Grizzlies swept the Lions by a 7-0 final to start off their season on a positive note.

Senior Hannah Dietzko claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the No. 1 singles match for Guilford. Riley Mullett notched a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles; Kiera Stankewich prevailed by a 6-4, 6-2 score at No. 3 singles; and senior Emma Mullett netted a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles for the Grizzlies.

Guilford also won all three doubles duels on its way to defeating Foran. The team of Kallie Kagan and senior Claire Pringle earned a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles; the duo of Kendall Mulligan and Molly Peterson notched a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles; and the tandem of Gabby Kellner and Alexi Gipson triumphed by a 6-3, 6-4 final in the No. 3 doubles match.

Boys’ Tennis

The Guilford boys’ tennis squad lost its season opener at Cheshire last week. The Grizzlies dropped a 6-1 decision to the Rams on April 10.

The Grizzlies received a victory from their doubles team of Sean Johnson and Luke Robbins in their contest against Cheshire. Johnson and Robbins claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 3 doubles match.
