The Hand gymnastics team finished in second for the SCC Virtual Championship meet that ran from March 20 to 26. The five teams in the conference competed separately during week to form the standings for the championship. Hand competed at ABC Gymnastics on March 25 and wound up posting a team score of 130.95 points to earn runner-up honors in the conference, only finishing behind Law, which finished first with 135.15 points.
Freshman Hadley Reiss took first place on the floor exercise with a score of 9.0 for the Tigers at the SCC Championship. Reiss also claimed third place on the uneven bars by scoring an 8.45 on her way to finishing in a tie for third place in the all-around with a total of 33.9 points.
Junior Paige Dean finished sixth in the all-around with a score of 32.9 at the SCC meet. Dean finished second on vault (9.0) and fifth for the uneven bars (8.05) en route to placing sixth all-around.
Sophomore Morgan McMahon finished third for the floor exercise with a score of 8.75 for the Tigers. McMahon also finished in a tie for sixth place on the vault with an 8.2.
Reiss, Dean, and McMahon all earned All-SCC honors for Hand by virtue of their performances at the conference meet.
Girls’ Basketball
The Hand girls’ basketball team saw its season come to a close when the Tigers took a defeat to Wilbur Cross in the semifinals of the SCC Division I Tournament last week. On March 22, No. 2 seed Hand played at 3rd-seeded Wilbur Cross in the SCC semis and lost the contest by a 38-37 score. The Tigers finished their campaign with an overall record of 12-2.
Senior Hadley Houghton scored 12 points for Hand in the loss. Junior Sophia Coppola scored eight points, and junior Brooke Salutari had six points for the Tigers. Senior Maddie Thomas and sophomore Coco Rourke added five points apiece.
Coppola and Salutari both earned spots on the All-SCC East Division Team based on their performances for Hand throughout the season.
Boys’ Basketball
The Hand boys’ basketball team took a 44-41 overtime loss to East Haven in the SCC Division II Tournament semifinals on March 23. The Tigers posted an overall record of 8-6 on the campaign.
No. 3 seed Hand played at No. 2 East Haven in the SCC semis and dropped a three-point overtime decision against the Yellowjackets. Junior Tyler Favre scored 15 points for the Tigers. Senior captain Nick Donofrio had 13 points, while freshman Kyle Hoffman scored 11 points.
Favre and Hoffman were both selected to the All-SCC East Division Team on behalf of the Tigers this season.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
The Hand boys’ swimming and diving squad finished in seventh place overall when the team competed at the SCC Virtual Championship that took place from March 18 to 26. Hand saw several athletes earn top-10 finishes in their events on its way to placing seventh in the conference.
Hand turned in its performances for the SCC’s virtual meet on March 24, and the 12 teams in the conference competed throughout the week. All of the athletes’ performances in every event were then tabulated in order to score out the team standings for both Division I and II. The Tigers finished seventh in the overall SCC standings with a total of 503.5 points and placed sixth in SCC Division I with 590.5 points scored.
Junior Jack Signorello swam a time of 4:49.41 in the 500 freestyle to finish second in Division I and third for the SCC outright in the event. Signorello also posted a time of 1:49.44 in the 200 freestyle to seventh in both the divisional and conference rankings. Senior John Beiner finished third in Division I and fourth for the SCC in the 50 freestyle with his time of 21.74. In the 100 freestyle, Beiner timed in with a mark of 51.10 to take ninth place across the board.
Junior Joe Starkey took fifth place in Division I and sixth place in the SCC in the 200 individual medley by swimming a time of 2:02.99. Starkey also swam a time of 56.33 in the 100 backstroke to place fifth in Division I and ninth for the conference. Senior Chris Pellegrino finished eighth in Division I and ninth in the SCC for the 500 freestyle with his time of 5:10.07. In the 50 freestyle, Pellegrino notched a time of 24.02 to finish 16th in Division I and 20th in the SCC.
Hand’s 400 freestyle relay of Beiner, Pellegrino, Signorello, and Starkey recorded a mark of 3:30.43 to finish fifth in Division I and sixth in the SCC. The Tigers’ 200 medley relay of sophomore Jonah Kehew, senior Rowan O’Connor, Starkey, and junior Ian Looby posted a time of 1:45.69 to take sixth place in Division I and eighth in the SCC. The 200 freestyle relay featuring Beiner, Looby, Pellegrino, and Signorello finished sixth in Division I and ninth for the SCC with a 1:39.69.
Kehew placed seventh in division and 11th for the conference in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.29. Kehew also swam a time of 56.96 in the 100 butterfly to finish tied for eighth in the Division and tied for 12th in the SCC. Looby finished 13th in Division I and 18th in the SCC for the 100 backstroke at 1:04.96. In the 100 freestyle, Looby went a 54.25 to take 19th in the division and 21st for the conference.
O’Connor finished with a time of 53.98 in the 100 freestyle to take 17th place in Division I and 19th for the SCC. O’Connor also swam a time of 1:10.83 in the 100 breaststroke to 14th place in the division and 21st in the conference.
Freshman Alex Marino placed 23rd in Division I and finished 51st in the SCC for the 50 freestyle with a time of 57.99. Marino also finished 24th in the division and 43rd for the conference in the 100 freestyle with a time of 2:18.31. Junior Alex Hauser finished 22nd in the division and 45th in the conference by swimming a time of 28.55.
Hauser had previously competed for Hand at the SCC Diving Championship that took place at Sheehan High School on March 20. Hauser finished in sixth place by recording a score of 332.45 points for his 11-dive performance. Hauser scored points that counted toward the Tigers’ total in the SCC Virtual Championship.
