03/28/2021 12:00 AMThe Greater New Haven (GNH) Warriors co-op boys' swimming and diving squad finished in second place at the SCC Virtual Championship that took place from March 18 to 26. The Warriors, who feature athletes from East Haven, Guilford, North Branford, and North Haven, earned a pair of first-place finishes and saw plenty of other solid performances on their way to placing second in the conference.
GNH turned in its performances for the SCC's virtual meet at Walter Gawrych Community Pool in North Haven on March 18, after which the 12 other teams in the conference competed throughout the subsequent week. All of the athletes' performances in every event were then tabulated in order to score out the team standings for both Division I and Division II in the SCC. The Warriors finished second in the overall SCC standings with a total of 880.5 points, only placing behind Xavier, which scored 974 points. GNH also came in second place for the SCC Division I standings with 1,018.5 points scored, and Xavier finished first with 1,069 points.
The Warriors claimed first place in two events on their way to earning runner-up honors at the SCC Championship. Finn Henry, a junior who goes to Guilford, took first place in the SCC for the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:43.34, finishing ahead of Noah San Vicente of Xavier (1:45.66) for the top spot. Brendan Conners, a sophomore from East Haven, finished first in the 200 individual medley by swimming a time of 1:54.71, edging out Edward Platanov of Foran-Law (1:55.81) for first place.
Henry also took second place in the conference for the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.12. Conners came in second place for the 100 backstroke by recording a mark of 53.13.
GNH's 200 freestyle relay of Conners, East Haven junior Hethon Foster, Guilford sophomore Aiden Cohen, and Henry claimed second place in the SCC behind a time of 1:30.39. The 400 freestyle relay featuring Henry, Guilford senior captain Dan Kamen, Foster, and Conners recorded a time of 3:18.83 to take third place in the conference. The Warriors' 200 medley relay of Guilford senior David Zhang, North Branford senior captain Connor Coyne, Kamen, and Cohen finished in fourth place for the SCC Division I standings and sixth in the SCC overall with a time of 1:44.13.
Foster finished third in SCC Division I for the 100 butterfly and was fifth in the conference with his time of 53.06. In the 50 freestyle, Foster swam a time of 22.35 to finish eighth in Division I
and ninth for the SCC outright.
Cohen finished sixth in Division I and seventh in the SCC for the 500 freestyle with his time of 5:03.20. Cohen also swam a time of 22.68 in the 50 freestyle to place 10th in Division I and 11th for the conference overall.
Coyne posted a time of 1:04.10 in the 100 breaststroke to earn sixth place in Division I and ninth in the SCC. In the 100 butterfly, Coyne timed in with a mark of 55.63 to take seventh in Division I
and 10th in the conference.
Kamen finished in 10th place in both standings for the 200 freestyle with his time of 1:51.79. Kamen also swam a time of 59.96 in the 100 butterfly to finish in a tie for eighth place in the Division I
standings and a tie for 12th in the SCC outright. Zhang finished eighth in Division I and 12th in the SCC for the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.22. Zhang also came in 10th place in Division I and 14th for the SCC in the 200 individual medley by finishing with a time of 2:12.35.
North Haven senior Cam Cargan took 12th place across the board in the 100 freestyle by swimming a time of 51.78. In the 50 freestyle, Cargan timed in at 23.64 to take 12th place in Division I and 14th for the SCC.
North Branford sophomore Spencer Carroll finished 11th in Division I and 15th in the SCC for the 200 IM with her time of 2:14.89. Carroll also notched a mark of 1:08.86 in the 100 breaststroke to finish 11th in Division I and 17th for the conference. Fellow North Branford sophomore Patrick Cucchiarelli took 12th place in Division I and 17th in the SCC for the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.89. In the 100 freestyle, Cucchiarelli hit the finish line in a time of 54.21 to finish 18th in Division I and 20th for the conference.
Guilford sophomore Lucas Espinosa swam a time of 1:02.13 in the 100 backstroke to take 10th place in Division I and 15th in the SCC. Espinosa also placed 12th in Division I and 17th in the SCC overall for the 200 individual medley with his time of 2:18.08. Guilford freshman Alex Hansen finished 12th in Division I and 16th for the SCC in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:30.97. In the 100 butterfly, Hansen swam a time of 1:01.23 for 14th place in Division I and 21st place in the conference.
Guilford freshman Sam Mayo went a 5:36.55 in the 500 freestyle for 13th place in Division I and 17th in the SCC. Mayo also swam a time of 1:20.07 in the 100 breaststroke to take 18th place in Division I and 29th for the SCC. William Cong, also a freshman at Guilford, finished with a time of 2:03.82 in the 200 freestyle to place 17th in Division I and 22nd in the SCC. In the 100 freestyle, Cong took 20th place in Division I and 22nd in the SCC with a time of 54.93.
North Haven freshman Victor Zito finished 14th in Division I and 20th for the conference in 500 freestyle at 5:43.74. Zito also took 19th place in Division I and 24th place outright in the 200 freestyle by recording a time of 2:05.77.
East Haven junior Pavlo Melnyk finished 17th in Division I for the 100 breaststroke and was also 27th in the SCC with a time of 1:18.49. North Haven senior captain Tanner Powell swam a time of 25.41 in the 50 freestyle to take 20th place in Division I and 30th in the SCC.
The Warriors also saw two athletes compete at the SCC Diving Championship that was held at Sheehan High School on March 20. North Haven sophomore Christian Butler took third place in the championship with a total of 404.45 points for his 11-dive performance. Powell came in 16th place for the diving competition by scoring 236.20 points on behalf of the Warriors. Both athletes recorded points that counted toward GNH's total in the final standings for the SCC Championship.
