Old Saybrook’s Basketball Teams Lose in Conference Tourney


Boys’ Basketball

The Old Saybrook boys’ basketball team played a couple of games to close out its regular-season schedule and split the pair before losing a first-round contest in the Shoreline Conference Tournament last week. With these results, the Rams’ final overall record on the year came to 6-7.

On March 15, Old Saybrook hosted Haddam-Killingworth and took a 68-50 defeat. Senior captain forward Ben Yost scored 10 points for the Rams, while fellow senior Garrett Brady added nine points.

Three days later, the Rams headed to Westbrook and claimed a 54-46 victory over the Knights. Yost had another standout game notching a double-double that included 19 points and 16 rebounds.

On March 20, the No. 8 seed Old Saybrook dropped a 52-37 home matchup in the first round of the Shoreline Conference Tournament against No. 9 seed Hale-Ray. The Noises got hot from beyond the arc and outpaced the Rams. Yost was the Rams’ top scorer again with 12 points.

Girls’ Basketball

Last week, the Rams finished the regular season with two games and earned a win and a loss between them before taking a defeat in the first round of the Shoreline Conference Tournament. Old Saybrook’s final overall record for the 2021 season ended up at 3-10 after last week’s results.

On March 15, the Rams headed to Higganum where they took a 49-36 road loss versus Haddam-Killignworth.

Three days later, Old Saybrook hosted Westbrook and claimed a 55-41 home win. The Rams came hot out of the gate posting a 12-3 lead in the first, and held a 26-8 advantage by the end of the half. Both teams scored 12 in the third quarter maintaining the status quo, and the Rams held on for a 14-point win, even with the Knights’ 21-17 advantage in the fourth.

Senior Priscilla Gumkowski poured in 21 points, while junior Lily Cody added nine points in the win. Senior Jenna Tully scored eight points, and fellow senior Taylor Stone had six points. Also notching points on the score sheet were juniors Mackenna Cooke (4), Beldina Feratovic (3), Cassie Johnson (2), and Ella Hagelston (2).

On March 20, the No. 8 seed Old Saybrook hosted No. 9 seed Portland, and the Rams took a 42-34 home loss in the first round of the Shoreline Conference Tournament.
